was reading some magazine in the dentist, there was a woman from dragons den iin the mag.
saying how she had a wardrode worth 3 million.

and she went onto say well i work hard for it.
so ideserve it.
and something todo with she sees her expensive clothes as a symbol of how sucessful she is.

really made me feel sick, how a horrible nasty attitude to have in life.

i'm sure even if i was a millionaire, i would not be proud about spending that much on clothes.

i don't know its just the arrogant im entitled to this that got me.
and dont they think people how have less also work hard. probably alot of them work alot harder

what do you think

mummysleepy · 06/10/2011 13:46

She hasn't just worked very hard she has also taken huge risks and now has a position of great responsibility. That (along with some luck) is why she has so much money, and given the amount she does for charity I think she's entitled to spend it however she wants!!

Noone would deny that LOTS of people work hard, long hours but levels of responsiblity vary and people should be paid more accordingly. Otherwise no-one would bother doing the jobs that have scary levels of responsibility!!

that is way more the point Riven.

And how often do people wittier on about Duncan Ballyntynes jacket or whether Peter Jones needs botox. Trite

wordfactory · 06/10/2011 13:50

I dunno Riv I think she's very open that clothes and cosmetics are one of her grand passions. A bit like Peter Jones adoring racing cars.

Also one of the things I do like about HD is that she remains true to herself.

Meteorite · 06/10/2011 13:52

It's not that, Ruby. It's more when people think "I did that too, but wasn't rewarded in a similar way".

"they begrudge successful people because they think 'that could have been me if I had done it - but I didn't"

Roseflower · 06/10/2011 13:53

Atcually it makes me sad its Hilary that has been pulled apart by the OP

This is a woman from a poor background who left school at 16- hardly your typical start for a millionaire.

To me the fact she became a great success in spite of this should be a massive, massive inspiration to anyone.

Unless people don't like the fact she stops them hiding behind excuses about how their own life is not as they like, and blame it purely on disadvantage backgrounds, they didnt go to Oxford etc... hmm

wordfactory · 06/10/2011 13:54

ruby it is one of my bugbears in life that fokk seem so keen to belittle the talents of the successful.

You hear stupid comments all the time about Damian Hirst - anyone could do it. Or JKRowling - her books are sooo badly written. Then the nonsense about many successful people spendingt their life on the golf course.

It makes me chuckle. I mean if it's just sod damn easy why the hell aren't the detractors doing it?

MarshaBrady · 06/10/2011 13:55

Out of all the people to be in good fortune HD deserves to be applauded not derided.

Single mother, health issues. All the stuff that would make success more difficult.

TotemPole · 06/10/2011 13:55

wordfactory, thanks for filling me on the details. It was something I only read briefly.

I agree that it's her money and she should be able to spend it how she wants to.

cantspel · 06/10/2011 13:55

she has more right to spend her hard earned 3 million on clothes than someone on benefits who insists it is their right to have half a dozen dogs and then wonders why they are always skint.

ThatllDoPig · 06/10/2011 13:55

which one was it? Debra grumpy Meaden or that one that looks like a tranny?

wordfactory · 06/10/2011 13:57

Rose I think the chattering classes get especially miffed when a working class girl done good...they criticise how they made it and what they do when they get there.

valiumredhead · 06/10/2011 13:58

I agree Rose

Ellen Degeneress selling her house for millions? What's wrong with that? Confused Yes, it's a lot of money but she and her partner forgotten her name earn a lot. Why would it make you sick unless it was pure envy?

sausagesandmarmelade · 06/10/2011 13:58

Debra grumpy Meaden or that one that looks like a tranny?

How rude...
Wonder how you would look if you'd suffered a stroke....and the ill health that she has.

valiumredhead · 06/10/2011 14:01

I saw HD interviewed the other week and she was laughing and sating that her shoulder pads have their own FB fan page and she is stuck in the 80's because that's the time she loved Grin I like someone who doesn't take themselves to seriously - she came across as really nice.

Hardgoing · 06/10/2011 14:06

Riven, yes, I agree, caring falls into the category of low (if any) pay, extremely long hours, difficult job. That's why so many find it so difficult, and why, when there is no 'extra' reason to do it (i.e. it is not for your own family) it is difficult to recruit people to do it, even if you pay above the minimum wage.

But, there are plenty of people who don't work as hard as a full-time (or 24/7) carer. I don't. My friend who is a single mum who is just wandering back to small part-time job now her children are turning 7 (so been in school/childcare 3/4 years), she doesn't (and I had to convince her to go back to work before her benefits were cut). Pretending everyone works as hard as each other is just disingenous, they don't (and they may well have chosen not to work that hard, as a lifestyle choice, because there are lots of downsides, the upside is you get to spend any extra cash how you choose).

bugster · 06/10/2011 14:08

It is an obscene amount to spend on clothes, but like some other posters have said, she has earned a lot of money honestly and has suffered a lot in her life, plus giving a lot to charity and help and employment to others. it's something that makes her happy and she can afford.

Having said that, agree with those who disputethis attitude thatall rich people are saintly hard working types. It is true that teachers, nurses etc work hard and do very valuable work and some of those people like carers, nurses etc really struggle to get by. They are not less worthy because they don't work 12 hours plus every day including weekends - why should people think that is a good way to live? How can you be healthy and have a good family life if you spend so much time at work?

Hardgoing · 06/10/2011 14:08

I also think Hilary has an excellent sense of humour, I saw her interviewed and she said she didn't realise that the first jacket (the white shoulder pad one) she wore would be worn in every single episode. So, she was stuck with it.

If you think about the parable of the widow's mite (I am not religious but it makes a good point), and think of people living on less than one pound a day (a large proportion of the world), everyone of us on MN has the equivalent of Hilary's clothes in excess material things.

MilicentBystander · 06/10/2011 14:10

Gosh, HD is utterly inspirational, I love her!

She deserves every penny.

I also refute the argument that teachers and nurses work as hard as CEO's - utter bollox.
I've never known a teacher taking a phonecall at 3 am or being in the office all day Sunday or taking international flights back to back.
And I was one and compared to my DH's job ( CEO) it was a piece of complete piss.

Ephiny · 06/10/2011 14:14

It certainly wouldn't be how I'd spend £3 million (not sure where I'd begin trying to spend that much on clothes). But then fashion and couture aren't really my interests.

It's her money, and I'm sure she has worked very hard for it - and if that's what she wants to spend it on then it's up to her surely.

Don't see how it affects you, or why it's anyone else's business really Confused.

bugster · 06/10/2011 14:14

What is so great about taking phone calls at 3 am? Unless you are providing some kind of emergency service. If it's just to enrich yourself, why should we admire that? And international flights back to back, big deal!

WilsonFrickett · 06/10/2011 14:14

Haven't read the whole thread but...
She saw her father go bankrupt when she was young, she's had - and got over - a stroke and her son is a heroin addict. She does masses for charity and is your basic working class girl made good IMO, who obviously takes pleasure in her 'armour' and you know what? Good luck to her.
