was reading some magazine in the dentist, there was a woman from dragons den iin the mag.
saying how she had a wardrode worth 3 million.

and she went onto say well i work hard for it.
so ideserve it.
and something todo with she sees her expensive clothes as a symbol of how sucessful she is.

really made me feel sick, how a horrible nasty attitude to have in life.

i'm sure even if i was a millionaire, i would not be proud about spending that much on clothes.

i don't know its just the arrogant im entitled to this that got me.
and dont they think people how have less also work hard. probably alot of them work alot harder

what do you think

Would anyone like to define what an entrepreneur is?

minipie 20 years ago I was homeless. If I went back in time, I would still tell the me of that time to work like a demon to create and take advantage of opportunities. I definitely wouldn't say don't worry 80% of it is luck so if you put in the same amount of effort as everyone else and you will still end up at the top of your profession in the City.

bugster · 07/10/2011 16:42

wordfactory i hope they will be resilient yes, but it's the implied suffering, which needs the resilience, which I don't want them to have - actually I don't want them to try lots of businesses and fail, i'd rather they did something 'safer'. That could be my character, I'm not a risk taker myself. Where we live, it's actually quite possible to have a professional life which doesn't necessitate lots of risk taking, or working 60 hour weeks, but still generates a good standard of living. We and the whole country are lucky though that that's the situation. Maybe it's different in Britain, but I suspect although those things are necessary for being an entrepreneur, they aren't for success in other fields. Which is why I don't think being am entrepreneur is for everyone.

bugster · 07/10/2011 16:47

word and lequeen point atken about admiring partners. Of course, it's great to admire and respect them and would indeed be sad if that weren't the case.

SpringHeeledJack · 07/10/2011 16:52

I don't mind people being rich

[gracious]

I really dislike this snippy "I worked hard" thing, though. Why on earth would it be necessary to say it?

everyone fucking works hard

not me, though. I mostly tit around on the internet all day

SpringHeeledJack · 07/10/2011 16:53

I don't admire my dp much, either. But he's good at carrying stuff and he still shags like a rattlesnake

ShellyBoobs · 07/10/2011 16:56

everyone fucking works hard

Bollocks.

PigletJohn · 07/10/2011 16:58

sorry I've been busy but

"TheRealTillyMinto Fri 07-Oct-11 14:25:44
needs more examination: 1000 people spending £10 on something made in China, is probably less useful to the UK economy than one person spending £10,000 on something made here by a craftsman or women."

sounds to me like special pleading on behalf of millionaires. How about 10,000 people spending money on UK plumbers, windowcleaners, corner shops vs. one person buying an imported Mercedes? Or a private jet? Or a villa in the Antilles?

Anyway my original point did not specify what it was to be spent on. I just said that paying millions to a few is NOT better than paying hundreds to many, so this is not a justification or benefit from having a small number of extremely rich people.

If you can demonstrate that there is a benefit from vast financial inequality, I'd be glad to think about it.

pommedechocolat · 07/10/2011 16:59

Agreed shellyboobs and I refer back to the 5.30pm discussion further up the thread.

SpringHeeledJack · 07/10/2011 16:59

ok

everyone fucking works hard, except for me and ShellyBoobs

...that better?

WhereYouLeftIt · 07/10/2011 17:00

"I really dislike this snippy "I worked hard" thing, though. Why on earth would it be necessary to say it?"

Because they don't want to be mistaken for someone who inherited their wealth? Because they feel they have the right to feel proud of it, and they wouldn't if it had just been given to them.

Proon · 07/10/2011 17:04

People say "I worked hard though" because they are proud of the work they have done. It's as simple as that. My grandfather worked hard and never made any money, but he still talked about working hard because he was proud that he did. It's ok to feel good that you can work hard.

SpringHeeledJack · 07/10/2011 17:06

just thinking...in this country, we only really accept the IWH line from multimillionaires

if teachers, for example, or nurses say IWH, we normally give them a bit of this Hmm

Proon · 07/10/2011 17:06

No we don't!

bugster · 07/10/2011 17:11

Think you're right sprinheeledjack - the money is the 'proof' that they have worked hard. People who aren't rich must be lying about it. Of course not everyone thinks like that, but a lot do.

SpringHeeledJack · 07/10/2011 17:12

oooh, we do

well, I don't. But I find our society generally does. We think people who work hard and don't get rich are mugs

I first noticed IWH when Ozzy Osborne got burgled

one of the first things Sharon said in a press conf (or whatever it was) was "we worked hard for that"

it took me a while to work out why it made me feel cross

it's the sort of justification for having hods of cash. Why can't they say "I have mahoosive unprecedented wealth and my bath is made of gold"...then talk about something else for a bit, and then say "IWH"?

it's linking the two in the same sentence I find crass.

TheRealTillyMinto · 07/10/2011 17:13

PigletJohn i am against social inequality for political reasons but did not think your original economic argument stood up.

limitedperiodonly · 07/10/2011 17:22

The Osbournes are the unluckiest people in the world in one respect.

Horribly newsworthy events befall them - massive burglaries, losing diamond jewellery from hold luggage - just when they have a book or TV programme to plug.

It's tragic but I admire the way they overcome their grief to tell everyone about it.

SpringHeeledJack · 07/10/2011 17:23

hehehehehe

Xenia · 07/10/2011 18:01

There are a lot of peoople who work hard but they have never worked all day and all night wi thout a break I except someone looking after a non sleeping baby I suppose which is even harder).

Generally in the UK people don't go on about what they earn (as in the Harry Enfield link above which is why it's so funny). Although I've said I have an island I'm certainly not rich and we go out of our way not to mention it off line. The English character is not to mention these things. I like that our cars suggest we have no money.

However journalists pick up on what helps their story and she probably said loads of things before the point about £3m of clothes and they just picked up on that point.

As for routes to wealth in the UK there are certainly those who achieve because of their difficult childhood or something going wrong as someone mentioned above. The success might be borne out of previous trauma. Others simply pick a career which is better paid than others and manage to make their way in it because of their good A levels etc. It is not true that everyone inthe City though is from private school b ackgrounds. It is packed with hard working clever Essex boys who certainly don't come from wealthy families for a start in some sectors.

bibbitybobbityhat · 07/10/2011 18:10

I'd be very interested in hearing what HD really meant to say.

She was on Secret Millionaire and very generous, although a little bit annoyingly clueless about how some people have to scrape by in this country. Its like she has lived in her own tiny introspective world of work work work and work, without looking up to notice that other people have very different lives through no fault of their own.

I quite like her and am grudgingly willing to accept that the journo made a headline out of a throwaway remark.
