was reading some magazine in the dentist, there was a woman from dragons den iin the mag.
saying how she had a wardrode worth 3 million.

and she went onto say well i work hard for it.
so ideserve it.
and something todo with she sees her expensive clothes as a symbol of how sucessful she is.

really made me feel sick, how a horrible nasty attitude to have in life.

i'm sure even if i was a millionaire, i would not be proud about spending that much on clothes.

i don't know its just the arrogant im entitled to this that got me.
and dont they think people how have less also work hard. probably alot of them work alot harder

what do you think

In many cases how hard you work is secondary, its how valuable the work you do is. If you are on the minimum wage you can work as many hours as you like but you are never going to be wealthy as the hourly rate isn't very high. If you start your own business which turns out to be very successful or are a graduate with a professional qualification then your work is so much more valuable then you are going to earn more.

TheRealTillyMinto · 06/10/2011 19:29

If you start your own business which turns out to be very successful

a business does not just 'turn out' successful. you make it successful. you make your work valuable.

Meteorite · 06/10/2011 19:30

It's quite possible to work as hard as this and still be on a low or average income. I certainly know people who work in a very similar way to this but are not highly rewarded financially.

"I haven't known DH do less than a 60 hour week for years. It is frequently more. I haven't had a holiday without a Blackberry and laptop for years. It is not unusual to find him in the office at 2 am on an International call."

kritosis · 06/10/2011 19:30

TheRealTillyMinto- I agree totally, sorry that was very clumsily worded

SlackSally · 06/10/2011 19:32

MillicentBystander - I wasn't actually thinking of you. Someone else claimed their brother in law worked 9-2:30.

I don't know any CEOs, so I can't comment on their working hours though I would assume they would be very high.

But do they work 3, 4, 5, 10 times harder than others? Because those are the multiples of average incomes that are being bandied about.

janewa · 06/10/2011 19:33

Its all about supply and demand, at the end of the day if you are in a low skilled job then you are easily replaceable as there is no shortage of people to replace so you aren't going to paid much, whilst if you are highly skilled then you are not as easy to replace so will be paid more, tis economics.

Meteorite i dont know anyone who works this hard:

"I haven't known DH do less than a 60 hour week for years. It is frequently more. I haven't had a holiday without a Blackberry and laptop for years. It is not unusual to find him in the office at 2 am on an International call."

...who is not well rewarded. what area do the people you know work in?

maypole1 · 06/10/2011 19:36

Better than I deserve benefits and the government to do everything for me and my kid Barr wipe my arse

bugster · 06/10/2011 19:46

milicent I don't say that you or HD or other rich people are lucky. i don't think money brings happiness. I value having a DH who is around.

MilicentBystander · 06/10/2011 19:50

bugster I think not having enough money can make you very miserable indeed.
Having money certainly can make life infinitely less stressful and give you choices you wouldn't otherwise have.

bugster · 06/10/2011 20:16

milicent yes granted not having enough money is hard, but people have different ideas of what is enough. I don't think you need so much thT a £3 million wardrobe represents a small fraction of your wealth, to watd off misery.

bugster · 06/10/2011 20:17

Sorry so many typos. Meant to say 'ward off'.

Meteorite · 06/10/2011 20:17

Have you ever tried this? Many business owners work all the hours they can, but this still doesn't mean they are wealthy. Some fields of work attract high incomes, others don't.

"a business does not just 'turn out' successful. you make it successful."

Meteorite · 06/10/2011 20:22

I can't say Tilly, don't want to out anyone! But I definitely stand by what I said.

"...who is not well rewarded. what area do the people you know work in?"

bugster · 06/10/2011 20:22

meteorite those people you know on low or average incomes who work more than 60 hrs per wk and all the rest, hwat kind of jobs are they in? Why would they do thAt for a meagre reward?

northernrock · 06/10/2011 20:30

Yeah. Why would anyone do anything if there is no money in it? Fools.

TheRealTillyMinto · 06/10/2011 20:31

Meteorite Have you ever tried this? yes. see my earlier post.
bugster Meteorite cannot 'out' her madeup friends Grin...

YoFluffy · 06/10/2011 20:31

Time and effort doesn't always equal fat salaries (junior doctor anyone?), nor does a meagre salary mean you sit on your arse doing nothing all day.

If someone can afford it and it makes them happy, then good luck to them with their £3 million wardrobe. Personally there's no way on God's earth I'd be boasting about it (especially if that's what she's appearing in on the current Dragon's Den shudder), it seems incredibly shallow.

TheRealTillyMinto · 06/10/2011 20:35

errr....junior doctors are investing in their well paid & rewarding careers.....

did anyone say "a meagre salary does mean you sit on your arse doing nothing all day"?

BrawToken · 06/10/2011 20:38

If people cared less about material possesions, the world would be a better place. Our society is so unequal. It is disgusting and people applaud this shallow nonsense Sad

TheRealTillyMinto · 06/10/2011 20:40

can anyone give an example of a low paid job such as Meteorite's DH:

"I haven't known DH do less than a 60 hour week for years. It is frequently more. I haven't had a holiday without a Blackberry and laptop for years. It is not unusual to find him in the office at 2 am on an International call."

SurprisEs · 06/10/2011 20:40

Meterorite, I am living proof tgat you can work 60 hrs a week for a very low wage. I was doing it not long ago.

But it really doesn't bother that people with money spend it on clothes or whatever they like. The money is theirs to spend.

ConstantCraving · 06/10/2011 20:42

It is immoral, ignorant and embarrassing to spend that much on clothes when so many in this world have nothing - through no fault of their own. Seriously, how could you live with yourself knowing you have a wardrobe of 3 million, when so many people don't even have clean drinking water. Conspicuous consumption is so ugly.

bugster · 06/10/2011 20:44

surprises, what we are all asking is, what kind of job involves that many hours for a low wage?

SurprisEs · 06/10/2011 20:45

Waitress.
