sorry to be thick and new, but what type of awful things does a poster have to say to get a thread deleted?

I dunno - I pressed 'hide thread' after the first two pages. -

And someone came online and maligned a cultural/ethnic grouping, while purporting to be posting on said group's behalf.

that kind of stuff.

And don't attack people directly (you can be oblique)
And don't name names (see above)

It's colonel Gaddafi. I moved on from thinking one banned poster is colonel Gaddafi's daughter to the Colonel Himself.
