To physically cringe at the word "dildocam" being used for the transvaginal ultrasound?

I've seen this word used quite alot on the pregnancy boards and other places. Ugh I just hate it..I shudder when I have the displeasure of reading it. What an unholy and vile word.

It's not a dildo. It's a bloody probe. I don't see any vibrating bits on the end of it to give the woman pleasure when she's having a scan.

me and my dp both pissed ourselves at reading dildocam first time of hearing it for both of us. have to agree with previous poster, dildos do not vibrate.

I think I've had over 40 transvaginal scans and have never even thought about what they're called! I think I've always been concentrating on clenching my pelvic floor to avoid the mortifyingly uncontrollable and unavoidably wet-sounding fanny trumps. Or I've been praying that the operator knows what he's doing and that I wasn't going to get the bloke we called The Jedi, cos he waved it around like a light-sabre.

Okay, dildos don't vibrate, but I was just trying to make a point.

I'll change it to "I don't see women gaining any pleasure when it's inserted into her vagina"

Many people who use it have gone through a whole battery of infertility tests, investigations for recurrent miscarriage etc etc etc.
In my experience, and I do use it myself, we are using it to inject a bit of light humour into a fairly depressing situation. Obviously nobody is getting any pleasure at the time of it being performed.
When you are on a thread which is often full of worry and bad news and so on, a bit of black humour is helpful to some.

Yes I can understand where you're coming from kat2504, but it just sounds so crass...unless it's a private joke that I just don't get? Mind you, I've also had my fair share of internal scans too.

I imagine they can use the probe rectally for non-obstetric type scans. I am trying to think of a really crass term for that......

I was going to suggest the same thing as kat2504. Some people make a horrible experience a bit more bearable by laughing at it with a bit of gallows humour.

As long as the person actually carrying out the procedure doesn't call it a "dildocam", I can handle it.

I mean, can you imagine the consultant, wearing a white coat, wielding the ultrasound thingy (probe sounds really rude!), you on your back terrified they wont find anything and the consultant uses the word "dildocam". It would be horrific.... but it is kind of a funny word.

And what kat said about the black humour. Of course no one gets pleasure from it. But I find it helps to take a humorous approach to someone approaching me with something resembling a dildo, putting a condom on it, covering it in lube and shoving it up my fanjo! Frankly after putting up with that a few times I will call it what I damned well like!

i do prefer fannycam myself but as someone who has been told of two ectopic pregnancies while using them, i would reserve the right to call them whatever i wanted. bit of dark humour at a dark time, fair enough.

at least fannycam doesn't imply it's possible alternative use as a sex toy

YANBU to cringe. You can cringe if you like, if it isn't your bag, it isn't your bag. Language is all about shared meaning. Those of us on said threads know that the last thing anybody is thinking about is getting their rocks off when they are being investigated for a miscarriage or unexplained infertility. If it ain't your thang, post on a fred what uses different words. Just sayin'
