to think the Daily Mail should not show photographs of horrific animal cruelty on its website?

I would urge you not to look, but the fucking DM have a still from I guess an animal rights video showing how fur is farmed (from apparently live animals) for the manufacture of fake Uggs.

How can I complain to them about this? I do not want to go back to their vile home page to seek out an email address, and I am not going to click on the link so that I can comment below.

I am beyond disgusted - with the vile Mail as much as the animal torturers.

Oh God, that video is horrific. I couldn't watch, even dh couldn't watch and he has a stomach of steel. Its honestly opened my eyes and even though i've never owned fake Uggs i will defintely be making friends etc aware of this barbaric act if they even think of purchasing a pair. Those images will stay with me forever, i feel sick.

onagar · 04/10/2011 15:50

I don't know why those people do it that way, but normally you'd kill the animal first. If it were essential to skin it alive you'd have trouble getting a bear, tiger or crocodile to keep still for it.

There are legal and recommended ways to kill animals in most places.

These places are run by criminals in the first place if they are passing them off as genuine.

I don't approve of cruelty to any animal. Are people more shocked though because this is a dog rather than a mink?

onagar · 04/10/2011 15:52

Oh and yes they should be in the news. Those of a sensitive disposition should just avoid reading newspapers.

Crosshair · 04/10/2011 15:54

''Are people more shocked though because this is a dog rather than a mink?''

No, I think its the fact you dont think about such things until you see them. :(

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 04/10/2011 15:59

The live skinning seems to be about the 'meat' as much as the fur. Fur is easier to remove and the 'meat' is 'better'. :(

I wouldn't advise anybody to look at those images but to have a look at the Animals Asia Foundation instead. They have some fantastic programmes with 'Doctor Dog' (children taught that dogs/cats are pets, not food) and the Moon Bear programme.

I support the foundation - also WSPA - and will happily tell people about it but not in graphic detail. It wouldn't help, it would paralyse me and that would be useless. God bless the workers who are doing all they can to bring an end to this.

On the subject of real fur upon scarves been sold in UK shops - recently I found some in a busy little fashion shop called M Butterfly. It's quite a cute little shop with some uncommon, funky little summer dresses and party wear. The shop I was in a is in a trendy university city which was a pity for them as I'd gone in there with the intention of spending 2 or 3 hundred pounds on my daughters and instead I came out with... well, you'll see in a moment.

Instead I said at the top of my voice, using all my past experience in holding meetings to get everyone's attention,

"THIS SHOP SELLS REAL FUR! COULD BE FROM A RABBIT, COULD BE FROM A CAT, I CAN'T TELL BUT I WILL TELL YOU THIS... YOU WON'T GET MY MONEY!

...IS ANYONE JOINING ME?"

I came out the door with almost all their customers!

:o

Start from the assumption that the Hate Mail is wrong every time and you can't err far from the true line.

Callisto · 04/10/2011 18:12

Don't buy from China. Buy British whenever you can. Also, just because something is expensive doesn't mean there are not animal welfare issues. As far as I can make out, all of the big fashion houses use snake and other reptile skin that is from China and the way the snakes are skinned (while alive) is just as hideous.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 04/10/2011 18:15

Callisto.. I would dearly love to boycott buying anything from China. It's just ridiculous that everything is made there and shipped here and elsewhere. I wouldn't mind at all paying dearer prices for British-made stuff, even European... just not from China.

rhondajean · 04/10/2011 18:19

AS much as the DM is maligned on here - and elsewhere - why would you be shocked at them showing what is happening?

If everyone knows about it surely noone will buy these - already illegal - fakes and the trade would end.

THIS is one of the many reasons why fakes and counterfeits, illegal downloads, etc are wrong.

I cannot understand OPs attitude. It must be lovely in cloud cuckoo land with all the fluffy clouds and bunnies and marshmallows.

Meanwhile for the rest of us back in RL, please PLEASE think about where it is coming from and what the real consequences are before you get a so called bargain.

Andrewofgg · 04/10/2011 18:19

Apart from fur, Lying, why the animus against China?

It's a fact that access to goods from China brought in by containers has greatly improved the standard of living of many of our people here - and don't you forget it.

PamBeesly · 04/10/2011 18:24

I actually think they should show the graphic images, those poor animals are suffering it and we should be wised up to what is going on, a picture speaks 1,000 words, I felt sick when it saw it. Its World Animal Day today and I can't think of a better time to highlight this vile practice, hopefully it will put people off buying the products made using their skin. Its so Sad

shaketheshame · 04/10/2011 18:30

China is horrible to dogs and cats, they say that the more the animal is suffering the better the meat. This country is still in the middle age.

splashymcsplash · 04/10/2011 18:42

I saw the blurb on the website, didn't click through but feel rather sick.

I had no idea that fur comes from live animals. Why on earth would anyone do that? How could they?

Then I am vegetarian and would never, ever buy fur.

Apart from not buying fur, what else can be done to prevent this?

AhsataN · 04/10/2011 18:43

the most horrific thing i watched on fur farming was a programme called "kill it, skin it, wear it". it showed you what really happens on mink farms and to seal cubs and across china.
sickening footage which left me sobbing like a child as it was so disturbing. i have worked on a farm and seen animal slaughter first hand.
live seals and foxes being held upside down by their legs and being smashed full force into the grounds with their heads. the animals are still alive while they rip the skins outside out off of their gasping bodies. a close up of their eyes blinking in the blood as they laid dying in agony.
truly truly distressing.

Crosshair · 04/10/2011 19:18

I found the iams lab video distressing, never been able to forget what those poor dogs and cats go through for the sake of pet food.

notabankersmum · 04/10/2011 19:55

lets face it, we all KNOW it goes on, i bet you did before today

I did not, I swear.

I was shocked and horrified to see this today. At no point have I heard of anything like this happening.

I suppose it's good that the problem is getting highlighted, but that won't stop me from welling up every time I think back to those images - I can't get them out of my head.

(And no, I don't buy fake Uggs, or real ones, for that matter - so I'm not sure what traumatising me like this has achieved, really)

Earthdog · 04/10/2011 20:21

The worst thing about China is the human rights abuses and the support of repressive regimes like the Burmese Junta. Unfortunately, it does seem impossible to avoid Chinese products these days.

GetOrfMo1Land · 04/10/2011 20:25

I had no idea either.

How bloody hideous.

val I would have love to have seen you in full stride in that shop Grin

ShellyBoobs · 04/10/2011 20:30

I've just watched as much of the youtube footage as I could manage. Sad

I had absolutely no idea that animals were skinned alive like this.

It's utterly horrific. How on earth can anyone be so cruel to a living creature?

MrsHuxtable · 04/10/2011 20:37

While I personally would be too upset by pictures like that, I think it's a good thing they are putting these stories including the pictures out there. Too many people are unaware of the ridiculous animal cruelty that is still going on in the world.

I'm not a DM lover but I do like that bit about them. They are not afraid to show people the ugly truth. It needs to be done.

TidyDancer · 04/10/2011 20:40

I can't watch the video, but I have seen the photos.

Horrific.

I'm disturbed by anyone who could wear fur or who thinks it's acceptable for animals to be killed for their own selfish wants.

I hope that article has made people think.

forrestgump · 04/10/2011 20:48

I watched this video a long time ago, like wise i signed some sort of petition, I have no problem with the Daily Mail linking it, it will make more people aware of where thier crap Uggs come from!

threeinmybed · 04/10/2011 21:17

No I had no idea either. Literally no idea. I was always under the impression that real fur was so expensive, you'd not be able to afford it anyway so I'd not have to worry that faux fur could possibly be real.

What kinds of shops are doing this though? High street stores? What should I stay away from? I want to tell all my friends so we can all avoid them. If anyone's worried about libel, then please just pm me. I feel sickened I could've bought something Sad

Bohica · 04/10/2011 23:11

I had no idea Sad
