to think the Daily Mail should not show photographs of horrific animal cruelty on its website?

I would urge you not to look, but the fucking DM have a still from I guess an animal rights video showing how fur is farmed (from apparently live animals) for the manufacture of fake Uggs.

How can I complain to them about this? I do not want to go back to their vile home page to seek out an email address, and I am not going to click on the link so that I can comment below.

I am beyond disgusted - with the vile Mail as much as the animal torturers.

So is this another reason against buying cheap furry tat from Primark?

jesuswhatnext · 04/10/2011 14:33

i also think that this shows just why we should be very careful and not buy fake goods of any sort - something or someone will have been expoilted in the production!

GetOrfMo1Land · 04/10/2011 14:34

appearently, it is cheaper to dye real fur and pass it off as faux than it costs to make faux fur, something i think we should all be aware of.

Good god!

TheControversialJessie · 04/10/2011 14:34

Um, by the way, what are Uggs? Some kind of shoe?

TheTenantOfWildfellHall · 04/10/2011 14:34

I've just read that link. Couldn't watch the video.

It's truly, truly awful.

The pain those animals must suffer is horrendous.

Wouldn't buy Uggs anyway. Certainly wouldn't now though.

LaurieFairyCake · 04/10/2011 14:36

Ok. This only applies to fake Uggs, if you buy the real ones then you get sheepskin which is a buy product.

Quite simply, people shouldn't buy fakes.

jesuswhatnext · 04/10/2011 14:36

uggs are very ugly flat sheepskin boots

LaurieFairyCake · 04/10/2011 14:37

By product - not 'buy'.

Buying real uggs or my preference, Celtic Sheepskin is fine.

MarginallyNarkyPuffin · 04/10/2011 14:39

It's not just the budget retailers who are at risk from this. If you can, try to get a loose thread of the 'fur' and singe it (obviously not whilst it's attached to the rest of the garment/shoe.) If you've ever reached over a lit ring on the hob you know what real hair smells like when it gets burnt Envy. Real fur will give off the same smell.

HappyFinnish · 04/10/2011 14:40

This, and all, cruelty to animals is awful, awful. Unforgivable. I recently joined Animal Aid and they have a monthly mag that I cannot read because it details such things - I don't like seeing this stuff either but we have to be aware otherwise we won't know it's happening and it will carry on.

MarginallyNarkyPuffin · 04/10/2011 14:41

'Faux' fur trimmed coats, jackets, gloves etc may well be real fur too.

TheControversialJessie · 04/10/2011 14:41

thanks Jesus

GOML, good god, indeed. I've always assumed that real fur would cost more, therefore the [whatever] I'm considering could only have a synthetic lining.

piratecat · 04/10/2011 14:43

so the 10.99 ones i got in bhs yrs back that look like complete fakes, and feel like synthetic and are labelled as such ARE synthetic? for that money they can't be 'cheaper' fur surely.

I am really glad of this thread, so we need to be very careful and spread the word about the fake UGG? but the more expensive fake ugg, is this right?

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 04/10/2011 14:44

I've no idea, threeinmybed

I doubt anyone could produce sheepskin boots for £30 though so unless they're clearly synthetic (I have visions of MNers setting fire to River Island!) then I imagine they could be produced using these hideous methods.

jesuswhatnext · 04/10/2011 14:46

if you buy fur, it should be very expensive, im talking in the thousands (im not saying its right, just pointing out that real furriers use the most expensive pelts and talioring etc) - these days, if you buy cheap fur thinking its fake, you could be very much mistaken, just be aware and be careful what you buy - those scarves made of rabbit fur dont always say 'real fur' on the labels.

jesuswhatnext · 04/10/2011 14:48

i think the chain stores are pretty careful in where they source their faux fur - im talking about markets/ebay/internet sites etc where a lot of stuff is scourced from china

MarginallyNarkyPuffin · 04/10/2011 14:52

Please don't burn down any buildings.

You can also part the fur and see what the strands are attached to. Sometimes you can see it's mesh = fake.

GetOrfMo1Land · 04/10/2011 14:58

How the hell would you find out though.

I can't apply a lighter to fur trimmed coats in House of Fraser.

Bloody hell I am astonished that this goes on. Jesus wept those poor damn dogs.

SuePurblybilt · 04/10/2011 15:00

I am eyeing up DD's £7 'all synthetic', according to the label, pair now and I don't see how they could ever be confused with any animal skin or fur.

Can someone link to a picture of the boots in question, without all the graphic stuff if need be? So that those of us with fakes in the house can check?

I would also add, to the warnings about fur, beware of some cheap toys and souvenirs (pund shop, market, tat shop). Many are rabbit fur, some are reputed to be dog and cat.

SuePurblybilt · 04/10/2011 15:05

Have answered my own question Grin.

According to the article, the boots in question are labelled as Uggs but are not made in Australia and are not real Uggs. So the super-plastic version for a tenner that don't pretend to be anything are as synthetic as they claim to be afaik.

Real Uggs - skin of a sheep. Counterfeit Uggs - skin of a dog. Cheapo fakes - plastic.

jesuswhatnext · 04/10/2011 15:05

MNP is right - when you look at a garment, part the fur down to the 'skin' faux fur is on an obviously synthetic base, pelt feels soft and warm to the touch.

this is a fairly new problem (passing off real as faux) so the buyers at shops like house of fraser will be very aware not to get caught out

GetOrfMo1Land · 04/10/2011 15:12

Urgh I still can't stop thinking about it.

Why the hell don't they kills the poor dogs? How the hell can anyone do that to a live animal?

HappyFinnish · 04/10/2011 15:31

GetOrf - exactly.

Crosshair · 04/10/2011 15:43

Awful, but I do think its important that such things should be reported on and seen in the public domain.

piratecat · 04/10/2011 15:46

getorf, ikwym. I saw a documentary about the same thing, but with cats about 15 yrs ago and it haunted me so much. Terrible, truly horrific. Disgusting.
