read the thread...the young lady phoned her aunt to let her know...

I was never bothered or embarrassed by my period...

I have never been bothered or embarrassed, but it is a normal part of life-nothing to fuss about. However-she did tell her aunt- so maybe she isn't like me- and doesn't find it cringeworthy.

I should say that, following Milk Tray Gate, I was quite able to shout downstairs 'Dad, can you chuck us me bangers off the washer' (I say, father would you be so kind as to pass me my tampons which are located on the washing machine).

I was a bit freaked out when mine started, period bit didn't bother me but the "welcome to womanhood" side of things I found a bit frightening, I didn't want big "changes" in my life. If someone had bought me a present emphasising that, I think I would have been a bit upset

Ah, just read rest of thread - it sounds like you read your niece correctly and it's something she'll appreciate. I wouldn't be delighted if my DD aged 12 was bought a pair of high heels tho, am another one to say check with her mum first
