to wonder why people say "full fat" coke?

Because it's not. Coke has no more fat in it than Diet Coke or Coke Zero. The difference is that Diet Coke is sugar-free but instead has all the other nasty sweeterners. So if you have to, call it "full sugar" coke or whatever but
FULL FAT coke does not exist. It's one of my pet peeves.....

Bonny, I do actually live in Scotland and am married to a Scot, but have never heard the term "ginger"....Does it come from the colour of Irn Bru?

OP posts:
practicallyimperfect · 28/09/2011 10:39

I say full fat and semi skimmed- like milk!

MrsHuxtable · 28/09/2011 10:42

Sjuper - if you call a fizzy drink "pop", now that is just another term, a regional one, I assume.(I do have a linguistics degree so have learned a thing or two about that Wink. But calling something juice if it's not, is different! And I am very used to the fact that things are done differently in different countries, thank you very much!

Ginger is used in Glasgow and surrounding area and pretty much the rest of Scotland refer to anything that isn't tea or coffee as juice, even coke.

Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 28/09/2011 10:43

"It is said with irony i.e. obese or super obese person ordering a large meal in McDonalds and a diet Coke."
Sad
Im a fat bird, and I just dont like the taste of full sugar coke. Does that make me ironic?? Confused

YankNCock · 28/09/2011 10:44

MrsHuxtable, it used to annoy me too when I first moved here. Now less so, but I still won't be saying 'full fat' Coke any time soon. The juice thing too, very much agree with you!

SjuperWolef · 28/09/2011 10:45

so long as you know Grin

AitchTwoOh · 28/09/2011 10:47

common folk in glasgow say ginger, less common say juice... to indicate any cold drink other than water or milk. i love saying full fat coke, it's a joke.

BonnyBanks · 28/09/2011 10:48

It originates with Scotland's other national drink and most commonly refers to it but can be used to mean any fizzy drink. I'm very surprised you haven't encountered the term if you work in a cafe. It is more a west coast term but is widely used.

The beauty and strength of the Englush language is its ability to adapt to and absorb many variations both regionally and internationally.

Bear in mind that lots of words used in Scotland have their roots in Scots (a seperate language) rather than in English. If you've lived in Scotland for a while you have probably picked up lots of Scots words without even being aware of them.

BonnyBanks · 28/09/2011 10:50

Aitch - common????

nomoremagnolia · 28/09/2011 10:51

DH and I call it red burp juice, silver burp juice etc but only when we're feeling silly

GetOrfMo1Land · 28/09/2011 10:51

What is Irn Bru? I have never had it (never fancied it, it looks like rocket fuel) - what does it taste of, orange?

I cannot stand the taste of proper coke, or coke zero, so I am on of those fools who orders a large macdonalds and the biggest burger they do, and a diet coke.

My brother (half brother, his dad is scots) loves Irn Bru, he lives in California now and pays a fortune for it in expat shops.

Perhaps you have to have Scottish blood to get it Grin

MissPenteuth · 28/09/2011 10:53

It's made from girrrrderrrrrs girders GetOrf. It has a distinctive taste that I couldn't quite define.

PeneloPeePitstop · 28/09/2011 10:54

I've called it Death Juice too.

BonnyBanks · 28/09/2011 10:54

GetOrf I'm afraid it tastes like... Irn Bru! You're going to have to taste it! It's a very popular hangover cure!

whatdoiknowanyway · 28/09/2011 10:55

I always thought it was using the same terms as people use for milk - full fat, fat free.

Regarding people ordering high calorie meal with diet coke. On the very rare occasions that I drink coke, I always ask for diet coke even when I order a fattening meal as I prefer the taste.

LetThereBeRock · 28/09/2011 10:56

It doesn't taste of orange. It's difficult to describe. It's fruity, but doesn't taste of a particular fruit, and there's a hint of bubblegum. It's very nice, though I only like diet Irn Bru.

itisnearlysummer · 28/09/2011 10:56

Actually DH calls it IcanIcan't. As in "would you like some IcanIcan't?" In his best Tubs voice.

Juice - is what comes from squished fruit.
Squash - comes in a bottle to be avoided diluted and leaves a nasty aftertaste on the tongue.

We don't actually 'do' pop. I don't offer it at home so don't have a generic term for it.

LetThereBeRock · 28/09/2011 10:56

You must try it.

BonnyBanks · 28/09/2011 10:59

Definitely LetThereBe - diet bru is the only way to go... I prefer it to the 'full fat' version

< ducks head and runs away from op >

HappyCamel · 28/09/2011 10:59

Like milk, it comes in various degrees of calorie content. So "full fat coke" is the equivalent of full fat milk. That's my reference point, anyway.

AitchTwoOh · 28/09/2011 11:00

yes, common. Grin we call them neds up here, as you may know. i was translating for our non-native readers.

legspinner · 28/09/2011 11:01

I say full fat Coke too and I am a biochemist and know full well it has no fat in it! Just a saying...like "lard milk" for full-fat.

BTW all this talk of Irn Bru and steel girrrrderrrrs has made me nostalgic. We can't get it here (NZ)!
