To respond to fb status about benefits & urine tests?

Today's copy and paste status amongst my acquaintances today implies that all people on benefits should have to take a urine test to show they are alcohol and drug free in order to claim. I'm truly fed up of benefit bashing comments like this from my 'friends' who, when challenged, usually say 'oh we didn't mean you, obviously'. Actually it's people just like me they are referring to. WIBU to challenge a friend on this and ask how they would feel about urine tests to claim CB, for example?

Before you comment on afghan I suggest you reasearch the subject, are you saying because my husband is out there doing his job he is encouraging people to do drugs???????? You have no idea what is happening out there or what was going on before the forces moved in there

GingerWrath · 24/09/2011 21:03

Again Dawndonna I never mentioned alcohol! And I believe more research needs doing on the effects of cannabis on MS, RA and FM, at the moment it is still illegal, and it should be made available on prescription.

Dawndonna · 24/09/2011 21:05

Yes, Gingerwrath but you still want to penalise people, who, through no fault of their own, are in a difficult position. e.g. removing their benefits if they fail a drugs test.

mandwa78 · 24/09/2011 21:05

I said people can drink I never said be an alcoholic, you said can they have alcohol then yes they can but in moderation. I take it you have never had alcohol, or do you just do drugs for fun????????

GingerWrath · 24/09/2011 21:05

Oh Jeepers, LtEveDallas, I feel we are banging our heads against walls (hoping you read my earlier posts)

Minus273 · 24/09/2011 21:06

There are also legal prescription medications that could produce a positive result in a tox-screen. Surely people wouldn't condone cutting off a terminally ill person's only means of support for the last few weeks of their life.

GingerWrath · 24/09/2011 21:07

Dawndonna not remove benefits but give them vouchers so they can't deprive their family! BIG DIFFERENCE!

Dawndonna · 24/09/2011 21:07

Mandwa78.
To whom are you addressing that comment?

BlowHole · 24/09/2011 21:11

But how would you tell who drank moderately and who drank in excess by doing a urine test?
Or is that a bit complicated for you?
And why so many exclamation marks? It makes you look a bit daft. And no I don't do drugs.

mandwa78 · 24/09/2011 21:15

They are actually question marks. Of course you can tell by a urine test and also by a blood test or did you not know that either. No its not complicated for me being that I did that job for 12 years

TheFrogs · 24/09/2011 21:15

Vouchers aren't a solution, vouchers can be sold. I know one person who would certainly do that.

GingerWrath · 24/09/2011 21:17

Alcohol is legal!

BlowHole · 24/09/2011 21:19

In the status update it says "alcohol and drug free"

GingerWrath · 24/09/2011 21:20

Vouchers redeemable to one person, not hard, like festival tickets, they aren't exchangable.

BlowHole · 24/09/2011 21:21

Have you seen all the glastonbury tickets for sale online? There are always ways round things.

Dawndonna · 24/09/2011 21:21

So, Gingerwrath remove their choice. How does that work for people who ended up taking illegal drugs through no fault of their own. How does it work for people with disabilities who use them to self medicate?

RedBlanket · 24/09/2011 21:22

So you would have to spend all your dole in a supermarket? What about gas, electricity, rent etc etc.

TheFrogs · 24/09/2011 21:22

But how would that work exactly Ginger?

GingerWrath · 24/09/2011 21:24

Heroin addicts etc get medical help, self medicaters see their GPs and go down the legal routes, it isn't rocket science, drugs are illegal for a reason!

Someonesnotinbed · 24/09/2011 21:24

I don't think we did establish that LtEve?

I asked you what you thought was inaccurate of the picture I got from the media here and you said that you couldn't be bothered to get into another discussion about Afghanistan.

I could ask you the same question again:
Is it false that the Taliban were trying to eradicate poppy?
Is it false that poppy production and export boomed after the NATO invasion?
Is it false that there are large numbers of Afghan heroin and opium addicts?
Is it false that many of them are children?
Is it false that both these figures have risen hugely in the last 10 years?

BlowHole · 24/09/2011 21:25

Just for the record I want to say that I do not take drugs, hardly ever drink, and am not on benefits. However, this does not mean that I can't have some empathy and compassion for other people who are in different situations from mine. Excluding those who use multiple question and/or exclamation marks.

If the taliban are trying to eradicate poppy why are they still growing it? No those figures havent got higher in the last 10 years. It sounds like you are a fan of the taliban and against our forces, surely I have the wrong opinion

GingerWrath · 24/09/2011 21:30

They are growing sweetcorn over poppies now!

mandwa78 · 24/09/2011 21:31

Oh blowhole grow up, I am neither on drugs, dont drink and I work and I also help people on benefits so because I used a question mark more then once that clearly makes me lower then you. No I dont think so.
