To respond to fb status about benefits & urine tests?

Today's copy and paste status amongst my acquaintances today implies that all people on benefits should have to take a urine test to show they are alcohol and drug free in order to claim. I'm truly fed up of benefit bashing comments like this from my 'friends' who, when challenged, usually say 'oh we didn't mean you, obviously'. Actually it's people just like me they are referring to. WIBU to challenge a friend on this and ask how they would feel about urine tests to claim CB, for example?

I dont have a problem with people on benefits, everyone is there at some point in their life. I find it quite strange though that some people take a status so far, if you dont like it then delete it easy

GingerWrath · 24/09/2011 20:43

No, what is wrong with urine testing benefits recipients and either giving them a)cash if they are not addicts or b)supermarket vouchers if they are addicts? Makes sure the kids are fed and clothed and the addict gets the medical help they need!

onagar · 24/09/2011 20:43

you have "to much self respect and pride in my family to throw away my life on drugs" but you want benefit claimants tested?

Well yeah cos its not like they are proper people like you is it.

Anyone other group you want tested? jews perhaps? black people

mandwa78 · 24/09/2011 20:44

Whos that aimmed at?

Minus273 · 24/09/2011 20:45

I have never been in the forces yet have been subject to random testing at work so it's not just the forces who get tested. Again I'll explain it is offensive to suggest that everyone who falls on hard times is a drunkard or drug user.

onagar · 24/09/2011 20:47

"Whos that aimed at?" well given that I quoted GingerWrath its aimed at her.

mandwa78 · 24/09/2011 20:47

minus273 that is not the point of the status, its aimmed at the people that do drugs and nothing else. Not people that have fallen on hard times

Dawndonna · 24/09/2011 20:47
  1. Drugs are frequently used by the mentally ill in an albeit misguided attempt to self medicate.
  2. Drugs are often used in conditions like MS, with good effect. Still illegal, but helpful.
  3. Alcohol, as number 1. Has anyone bothered to think what led these people to be addicted.
  4. Vouchers - sorry but my answer to that is piss off. Those with mental health problems and/or physical disabilities are entitled, yes entitled to a decent life, which may mean the odd bottle of wine. It's no good saying, oh, we don't mean the genuine ones, how do you differentiate?
Yes I agree that there are some lazy bastards, but they're in the minority.
GingerWrath · 24/09/2011 20:48

Do not bring race or religion into this, that is just stupid! Addicts are addicted through a lifestyle choice, not by birth or religion, there is absolutely no comparison.

As it happens, I was on the dole when I was younger, but I never took drugs!

Minus273 · 24/09/2011 20:49

No mandwa it is aimed at everyone on benefits.

mandwa78 · 24/09/2011 20:49

I didnt see that but ginger is not saying it should be aimmed at jews and blacks you brought that up, like you she was stating a point, we are all entitled to our own opinion and again if you dont like that status ignore it and maybe get on with your life

onagar · 24/09/2011 20:51

GingerWrath you are applying it to benefit claimants which implies you think they are not proper people like you. That they are less moral or have less rights.

That is no better than saying "we better test all the jews for drugs - you know what their like"

BlowHole · 24/09/2011 20:51

What if they're not addicts, but occasionally take "recreational" drugs? What then? Are they allowed to drink alcohol? That's legal.

Dawndonna · 24/09/2011 20:52

GingerWrath Do you really feel that addicts are addicted because of a lifestyle choice. Please read my other post.

GingerWrath · 24/09/2011 20:53

Dawndonna I have not once mentioned alcohol or mental illness in this, I am on about illegal drugs!

mandwa78 · 24/09/2011 20:54

Oh please people grow up, its a copy and paste on facebook, if it insults you that mush then come off there cos these comments will always come up. There are groups on there, kill the armed forces but we dont all moan about them

GingerWrath · 24/09/2011 20:55

Recreational drugs are still drugs, ergo illegal

mandwa78 · 24/09/2011 20:55

Of course people can drink alcohol, this is about ILLEGAL drugs

onagar · 24/09/2011 20:55

I've not even seen it on Facebook. I don't get my friends from there.

I'm responding to the posts saying that benefit claimants should be tested because they are more likely to be on drugs and neglect their children than proper people.

Dawndonna · 24/09/2011 20:59

Gingerwrath

Illegal drugs are used to self medicate.

Dope is used, fairly frequently in those with MS and other degenerative disorders, often recommended by the G.P. It's (dope) also good for pain management in arthritis. It's illegal, but sometimes it's the only thing that helps.
As for other illegal drugs, as I said, those with Mental Health problems often use dope and stronger drugs to self medicate.
Being drug or alcohol dependent doesn't automatically make someone feckless. Think about what got them to that point. Then, think about what happens when you remove the only support they have, eg. Their benefits.

GingerWrath · 24/09/2011 20:59

Biscuit onagar nobody ever said that, are you delusional?

Someonesnotinbed · 24/09/2011 20:59

Maybe the military could administer drugs tests to children in Afghanistan before they build schools for them? To my understanding the Taliban were on a mission to eradicate opium poppy, and since the NATO occupation production has skyrocketed and many more local people than before are addicted?

mandwa78 · 24/09/2011 21:00

Whats proper people? Doesnt matter what religion, class etc you are you can still be a victim. My point is that because of one status this has got completely out of hand. If we all agreed it would be a very boring life

BlowHole · 24/09/2011 21:00

So alcoholics are ok, people who occasionally take drugs are not? I'm not advocating the taking of drugs, just saying that your plan wouldn't make anything better for anyone, least of all the children of benefits claimants, who would be penalised for their parents choices.

LtEveDallas · 24/09/2011 21:02

Your understanding is very wrong someonesnotinbed but then, we've established that before haven't we...
