To think it's not my job to check DH's pockets before washing his clothes?

We have 3 DC's so do an awful lot of laundry. Twice in the last month DH's phones have gone through the washing machine. AIBU to think it's not my responsibility to check through the pockets of things he's dumped in teh laundry basket?

Good god no! YANBU. I hope he isn't blaming you!!

worraliberty · 24/09/2011 10:03

Not this again lol Grin

IMO yes, we should all remove stuff from our pockets but it's also down to the person putting the washing in the machine to check.

Surely you check the kid's pockets too?

Meglet · 24/09/2011 10:03

yanbu. It's his own stupid fault if he leaves something in there. He's not a kid anymore.

And, if that something breaks the washing machine then he should be the one arranging the repairs and taking time off work for it.

Argos · 24/09/2011 10:04

The kids don't use their pockets & DH has always emptied his so I just never bothered checking

I always check.

Then again, I've had enough of picking bits of tissue paper off clothes.

DH doesn't check - that's why the tissue paper problem continues.

(DCs don't do the washing yet, but I'll train them to check).

smartyparts · 24/09/2011 10:09

I refuse to check.

Which is possibly why I have just washed and tumble dried a mouth guard.

worraliberty · 24/09/2011 10:10

Well one day the kid's will use their pockets and you're bound to wash something you really don't want to.

Even just tissue is a pain in the arse when it's left in pockets. It spreads all over the washing and can damage the machine.

In the grand scheme of things, it's not a biggy to quickly check. It takes seconds...and yes he should also check.

MurunBuchstansangur · 24/09/2011 10:10

YANBU.

I don't do tissues. I won't risk touching them.

If it is in the basket, it can go in the wash. If I pick it up off the floor to wash it, then I'd check. That's why I don't pick washing up off the floor

trixymalixy · 24/09/2011 10:10

If it's something that he put in the laundry basket yanbu, how stupid of him to put his phone in the laundry basket.

I do always check though just in case.

Hatesponge · 24/09/2011 10:11

When I was still with my Ex, I never checked his pockets. I already had to gather his clothes up from wherever he dropped them round the house, sod checking his pockets as well!

OtterBjitch · 24/09/2011 10:15

I always check, and I keep whatever I find. I have got a huge collection of Go-gos and lego figures. Grin And DH's loose change pays for chocolate and magazines.

OpenMouthInsertFoot · 24/09/2011 10:18

I think that people should remove stuff from their pockets before putting their clothes in the washing basket but, because we're all human Grin whoever whaps the load in should do a quick pat down too.

At the end of the day, if something valuable goes through the wash, does it really matter whose fault it was? It's still ruined and still money wasted.

Argos · 24/09/2011 10:19

I guess it makes sense to check from now on!

OP posts:
FellatioNelson · 24/09/2011 10:19

I live with a houseful of male creatures and I have done this many times, with phones, ipods, cash, ID passes and train season tickets.

I always try to check, because I know that they are all useless at it, but I refuse to take responsibility for things that get missed.

upahill · 24/09/2011 10:19

Who ever is putting the clothes in the machine does a final check in our house.

We both stick a wash on when there is enough clothes and it only takes a minute to check.

I've left a packet of sweets in mine that would have caused a mess if DH hadn't checked.

2littlegreenmonkeys · 24/09/2011 10:26

I don't check pockets, but then DH does the majority of the laundry in this house. He doesn't check pockets though and I would not expect him to check mine as I am an adult and if I put something in the basket to be washed I take whatever I have in my pockets out as it is my responsibility.

thesortinghat · 24/09/2011 10:31

I check, we'd lose a small fortune in small change and notes not to mention the drill bits, credit cards and chocolate wrappers.

He has many housekeeping faults, this is one battle I cannot be arsed to fight. Plus, it's hard to take the moral high ground when I may have washed a hanky or two. :o

worraliberty · 24/09/2011 10:32

At the end of the day, if something valuable goes through the wash, does it really matter whose fault it was? It's still ruined and still money wasted.

Exactly! And as someone else said...we're all human and we all make mistakes. It doesn't take a second to quickly pat the pockets down.

MrsCog · 24/09/2011 10:35

YANBU - DH's should check their own pockets - this is a classic example of 'wifework' isn't it.

DC's slightly different - they might need a helping hand to learn!

bubbles4 · 24/09/2011 10:36

I once had a 5p piece stuck between the inner and outer drum of my machine,it was uneconomic to repair it,since then I,ve always checked pockets.

aldiwhore · 24/09/2011 10:40

DH and I both do the washing, we both try and remember to empty our pockets before dumping stuff on the dirty washing pile, but whoever loads the machine checks as well...

I don't understand this whole 'wifework' thing. DH and I pretty much share responsibility for everything, unless he's working away, at which point everything becomes wifework!

YABU and so is your DH for not checking pockets, and for not doing the fair share of washing.

I never check. Whoever puts things in the washing basket has the responsibility of checking them.

BertieBotts · 24/09/2011 10:46

I'm so forgetful, I think it's the responsibility of whoever's doing the washing to check. I think DP has only ever left money or paper in his, I leave loads of random crap in mine.

I don't bother checking pockets when I take things off, but if doing the washing it seems a logical step. And DS is 3 so not likely to check his own, so I may as well check DP's while I'm doing our two.

WilsonFrickett · 24/09/2011 10:47

I always check because I always leave tissues in Blush. However, if my phone had gone through the wash once already I'd make damn sure I didn't leave it in my pocket again so in that respect YANBU.
