To think a school can't legally suddenly ban the headscarf for muslin girls!

So our local catholic school has banned the headscarf this week...disastrous for some of the girls but also against church advice that headscarfs are fine, against DFES advice about consultation and sensitivity to religious groups, against best practice as this type of change should involve the governing body? discriminatory on religious and sexist grounds...Sikh boys can keep their turbans.

Aibu to think that the school is legally in the wrong?

Sikh boys can wear turbans but Muslim girls can't wear headscarf? Wtf?
What about crucifix for Christians?

Seems a bit random and discriminatory if it isn't an all out ban on any religious wear

dozyrosie · 13/09/2011 00:22

Assuming you mean Muslim and not muslin. YANBU.

Welcome to Mumsnet

cornsylk · 13/09/2011 00:22

are you sure? Do your children go to this school?

RedRubyBlue · 13/09/2011 00:23

It is a piece of cloth. That is all.

Speak to the church, the temple the mosque. Keep the school neutral.

Gets ready for a flaming but kids are kids and generally don't care. They just have mates.

Headscarfs123 · 13/09/2011 00:24

Exactly...and Muslim not muslin!

Plenty of Muslim girls attend and the change only just notified without warning.

Catholic schools anticipate other faiths attending, they have general poicy advise that suggests scarfs are an acceptable form of modest dress. Can't fathom this schools position?

Yep my children do...informed by senior teachers.

These girls do care...their families care. It can't be correct?

OP posts:
cornsylk · 13/09/2011 00:27

why would senior teachers be informing you? Did they have a meeting. Confused

Headscarfs123 · 13/09/2011 00:27

I am not a troll! Not usual name as don't want to out school. Well would if it would help!

OP posts:
Headscarfs123 · 13/09/2011 00:29

Senior teachers informed the pupils during an assembly, new uniform policy given out. So this doesn't sound believable? Exactly but it happened at the back end of last week.

OP posts:
RedRubyBlue · 13/09/2011 00:30

Help what?

Name the school.

cornsylk · 13/09/2011 00:32

So the teachers informed the pupils before they informed the parents? How old are these pupils?

RedRubyBlue · 13/09/2011 00:33

Hides thread because I cannot care..............this will only get worse

cornsylk · 13/09/2011 00:33

Yes I'm going also.....

ChaosTrulyReigns · 13/09/2011 00:34

otw

Headscarfs123 · 13/09/2011 00:35

Help change the policy I suppose. The school is a catholic one in a largely muslim area, naming may create more pressure not to change the policy iyswim. Really I hope someone knows whether this can, legally be done. I know the veil can be challenged but a headscarf?

OP posts:
reelingintheyears · 13/09/2011 00:36

So Muslim girls in headscarves are going to a Catholic school?

Is it me or is this unusual?

Headscarfs123 · 13/09/2011 00:38

Worse? I posted in the wrong place maybe but not deliberately. Hoped to get some help before contacting the school directly.

School is secondary.

reelingintheyears · 13/09/2011 00:39

Do Muslim schools make Catholic children/girls wear headscarves?Hmm

CaptainNancy · 13/09/2011 00:39

reeling- where on earth do you live that it is unusual for people of other faiths to attend a catholic school?
