to really want a 'hide poster' function?

Argh. Every so often there is a really infuriating, broken record type poster who's on every single bloody thread, I wish I could just hide them..

I know this has been done before but argh..

Well that's fine Bimbo - you can choose to unhide them as and when you want to

BimboNo5 · 12/09/2011 23:35

But if they are saying something offensive/unkind surely MNHQ should be addressing that? If someone is simply saying something you dont like/happen to agree with etc then the only way to avoid that is to use the PM facility/chat on facebook etc. Trolls and sockpuppets go with the territory on forums just like mellow birds at toddler groups.

FabbyChic · 12/09/2011 23:36

Actually you did make a subtle hint whilst referring to me, about the fact that I get through so many threads.

I had not realised we were only supposed to post on X amount.

I sit at the PC all night after work to unwind, I don't post elsewhere so I do post a lot of a night, I posted more when I wasn't working. Maybe I should give up my day job to piss more people off. ;o)

lisad123 · 12/09/2011 23:36

i for the first time ever, found someone i want to block on loads of posts Angry

JarethTheGoblinKing · 12/09/2011 23:39

Trolls and sockpuppets wouldn't fall under the hide function though because they are almost always new user names, so that is irrelevant.

It's less to do with trolls, nothing to do with particularly unkind or offensive posts (which many people would report anyway) and much more to do with comments from people who wade into a thread, impart their (often useless) 'wisdom', decide it's the only option for the OP and then wander out again.

They irritate me and I don't want to see their drivel.

OP posts:
MissPenteuth · 12/09/2011 23:41

Oh it's definitely me.

'Anyway you know you'd end up unhiding them when you see lots of 'OMG xxxx cant believe you just said that' type posts, curiosity would get the better of you (as it would me!)'

And the evidence for that is all the posters who flounce off their own threads calling everyone who disagreed with them 'itchy cunts, only to return minutes later for Round Two.

BimboNo5 · 12/09/2011 23:44

Well talk boards invite opinions and views, whether you think someone elses are right, wrong or downright annoying is by the by. If you struggle with that (generic you) then it's probably best not to frequent them.

FabbyChic · 12/09/2011 23:48

Bimbo speaks sense.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 12/09/2011 23:49

Well yes, obviously they do Hmm

Obviously other's people's opinions are essential or this site would be a very boring place. I'm not talking about people I disagree with as such, and it doesn't matter. Often, either in RL or on the internet, you will have a clash of personality with a person who just riles you.

p.s. are you calling me generic, like Wink

OP posts:
BimboNo5 · 12/09/2011 23:50

Yes Generic YOU!!!! Grin

JarethTheGoblinKing · 12/09/2011 23:52

Right.. that's it.

tuwoooo

JarethTheGoblinKing · 12/09/2011 23:57
Hmm

Why not try just not reading the posts of the people you would disable to not read? You know what they are going to say anyway.

Also its not practical as you will read lots of other people responding to them, and your comments will then make you look like a halfwit as you haven't read half the thread.

JarethTheGoblinKing · 13/09/2011 00:08

Because I end up half way through their posts as I'm scanning the thread, re-read, look at the poster name then roll my eyes and thing 'oh good, it's them again'

I already look like a halfwit on some threads as it's impossible to read all posts and digest them all and end up repeating something that the OP has already answered.

OP, maybe you spend too much time on here. The forum is too big for one person to be in every thread you open.

Hiding poster functions can and do work elsewhere. Delphi forums is a great example of this.

In fact the PTB at Delphi encourage hiding posters over reporting them or engaging them in bun fights.

When you hide someone over there it just shows their name bar, the date and time they posted and a message saying 'You have this poster on ignore. Click here to stop ignoring this poster.'

Yes, sometimes people ask what the hell someone is referring to as they haven't seen the hidden post. But not often.

Of course, Delphi also has a function that automatically adds a link back to the poster you are replying to and a 'user' area that shows unread messages to you. But it's a much different forum design to MN.

But I still think ignoring posters would work on MN with very little problems. Although I do not know if it will work within in the tech and design of the forum.

TheVermiciousKnid · 13/09/2011 08:42

I would love to be able to hide posters. I would hide all of you and then I could have a lovely, quiet forum all to myself.

Cereal · 13/09/2011 09:16

It's a bit like Facebook - pretend people you don't like aren't there.

Pedicuri · 13/09/2011 09:27

Ooooh yes - I have a poster I would love to hide, as they make me spit feathers. I would do so, but I think I made bad career choices as a teenager, so may not be able to.
Hmm
