To wonder what the govt has planned to punish those NOT on benefits?

This is not the first time cutting benefits has been suggested as a punishment. How are the government proposing to punish parents who don't tackle truancy efficiently that aren't on benefits exactly? Just like the assertion that the rioters should lose benefits, yes because they were ALL on benefits weren't they? Hmm

Once again the government fuels the totally untrue daily mail esque belief that all of society's ills lie at the feet of benefits claimants. Apparently they are the root of all evil, eh? Hmm

Not one of the policies publicised has said what would happen to those who do not claim benefits.

Money designed for basic sustenance should not be removed imo. At the end of the day it is the children that will suffer from these measures.

Saying that Tories don't care about the poor may seem unfair to some and a generalisation, but the objectors miss the point surely that the Tory view of how things should be run is essentially ever man for themselves

Those who plan Conservative strategy wouldn't normally deny it, but would say that this creates the healthiest economy and allows all to benefit in the long run.

Sometimes they spoil the effect by adding something like "After all the more rich people there are in big houses the more cleaners needed which provides much needed employment for everyone else." but it is their theme.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe I can only tell you what I've seen and experienced from my fathers point of view. His circumstances improved dramatically when labour came in. They remained fairly stable for the following years. Over the last year they have plummeted and I honestly believe that if it weren't for the British Legion, he's be dead.

Getting infections because the nurse doesn't come out frequently enough to change his catheta anymore. Breaking his arm and having stitches in his head because he fell over trying to get into a taxi to the hospital because they will no longer fund adapted transport.

And worst of all, my mother being woken up at 4.00am by a neighbour going off to work who found my dad lying in the street in his pjamas, cold, frightened and confused. He was supposed to be in hospital following yet another infection which interferred with his parkinson's meds. Turns out cuts meant that at 3.00am they needed his bed, woke him up, discharged him, paid the cabbie and stuck him in the back and sent him home alone.

So no, I don't think they do care

"there's an old joke, a daily mail reader, a banker and a benefits claimant are having a cup of tea together, the banker takes 11 of the 12 biscuits on the plate and leans over to the daily mail reader and says 'you wanna watch that benefit claimant-he's after your biscuit'"

Excellent!

fargate · 12/09/2011 16:04

It's utterly appalling that your father is being ill-treated like this, Kladdkaka. I'm not easily shocked but found your account really upsetting. Your poor father - and mother, too. Dreadful.

This is the shameful reality of cutting services for vulnerable people.

thefirstMrsDeVere · 12/09/2011 16:12

ahem...

maypole you do realise that those using private health care and private schools are still making use of the NHS and state school system dont you?

Who do you think trained all those doctors and nurse and technicians and teachers?

They dont go to special non-NHS/governement subsidised medical schools and universities.

Where do you imagine these private hospitals get their blood from? Special private blood banks?

People with money are also likely to make use of mental health services and social services as well. It wasnt that long ago a couple of wealthy mothers killed their children. They are now residing, at huge cost to the tax payer, at HMP.

Having money does not = morally superior or higher IQ, nicer, kinder, better looking or harder working.

ALL it means is - you have more money.

Why I need to say all that I dont know but I clearly do.

So I did.

SinicalSal · 12/09/2011 16:15

banging your head against a brick wall, MrsDeVere. Don't you know we live in a meritocracy now, hmmm?

Dawndonna · 12/09/2011 16:21

Some heroin addicts and drunkards are that way because they have severe mental health problems, in fact, my guess is that most of them do. It's very common for those who have slipped through the net to self medicate. For them it's the prescription drug they can't access. So they're not all layabout scroungers are they. Try taking a different perspective Maypole.

YouWinOrYouDie · 12/09/2011 16:26

If it is indeed a true meritocracy forthcoming then the likes of Maypole have their days numbered.

Fantastic post, MrsDeVere.

fargate · 12/09/2011 17:53

I think maypole must have missed her diversity and equality training this year. Lets hope she doesn't overlook it next time. Wink

fargate · 12/09/2011 17:56

There's obviously more of this sort of thing to come -

Parents who refuse to tackle disruptive pupils should have handouts cut, says think tank

Parents who refuse support in tackling their violent and disruptive children should lose state benefits, one of the Government's favourite thinktanks, said today

Exactly what I mean about the rhetoric, 'handouts', not help. The press hacks me off as much as the government.

OpinionatedMum · 12/09/2011 19:07

This is disturbing.

Parents should be able to refuse help if they don't feel it's appropriate.

Benefits should not be conditional on parenting ability. They are there so you can eat and maintain a roof over your head. Basic human rights for the parent and child.

If the parents are that bad then there is the care system. Noone should go without. You don't even do that to criminals in jail.

ChickenLickn · 12/09/2011 21:14

I think the OP has it all wrong.

The tories in government LOVE crime. Thats why they were in that crime club at university!

They want all the poor people to have to steal for their dinner. Thats why they want to cut the food benefits for them provided through the state.

Thats why they reward thieving bankers and those who cheat on their taxes.

Conservatives = crime. They love it the perverts.

Dillydaydreaming · 13/09/2011 07:37

It makes me laugh that the sole sanction is benefit cuts according to the DM (and some of the more reactionary idiots on this thread).
Most of the riot participants seem to have been working people or those whose parents do not need benefits.

Still why let facts get in the way of a good bit of propaganda eh?

TotemPole · 13/09/2011 10:17

I don't know what I think about this.

If your child plays truant, how do you make them go school?

TotemPole · 13/09/2011 10:17

go to school.
