Has this been mentioned before? I've only really spent time round these parts on occasion when I've needed some opinions on tricky situations, yes yes, all take no give. But this week I've had some really boring design briefs to work on and I'm struggling to concentrate so this has been a welcome distraction. I work alone and its akin to having a chat in the office, I used to spend a lot of time on MSE forums for that end, but eventually the worthier than thou going-to-the-nth-degree-to-save-1p doctrine round there felt too at odds with my propensity to throw money at problems and I lost interest.

To get to the point - having been poking around mumsnet talk all day I've found the interface quite limiting, being used to MSE. It sounds like a small thing but on other forums being able to 'like' someones comment is a good way of quietly agreeing with their point without having to clog up the thread by actually commenting. Also, being able to quote other peoples comments within your comment to makes for better flow and understanding.

There are other annoying things of this ilk too, but I don't want to drone on and on.... OR - perhaps I'm missing something and have turned into a luddite who doesn't understand that all of these capabilities exist in some magical popup window I've inadvertently disabled?

Nope. They don't exist. And we don't need them.

whenever I try and read a forum discussion on another site that uses the quotation facility I find the exact opposite; it completely disrupts the flow and gives me eye-ache. Maybe I'm a bit fick, tho.

Yes it has been mentioned before - every few months or so.

The vast majority of mumsnetters do not want "like" buttons or similar.

They appreciate the site for its relatively uncluttered look and ease of use.

yeah I agree, SarahStratton, I find all of that frippery utterly abhorrent, but at least being able to easily quote someone would be an improvement no? There was a massive hoo har on MSE when the like button was introduced, I remember thinking it was a load of old nonsense at the time, but it actually became quite useful. Tee2072 point taken - I'm happy to observe the local vernacular & southeastastra now NOW, you know I was saying nothing of the sort (god forbid!)

So you can correct mistakes in your post ,if you have made a glaring error and are scared the pedants will come and get you

I am in favour of the quote function because it makes rowing debate easier to follow and stops all the 'was that aimed at me' posts.

YES - usualsuspect timed edit was another on the list - I HATE being misconstrued particularly when its my fatfingered touchtyping that's causing the misunderstanding.

the edit facility gives you a couple of minutes to go back to your post and amend it to say for eg, massive clock and save you all the piss taking about your massive cock

I suspected I wasn't gong to be the first to have brought this up - apologies for raking over old ground. Perhaps the like button was a bad example of things I think are lacking - probably purely egotistical on my part, how I used to revel in watching the 'likes' mount up after making a particularly witty/cutting/insightful observation

No. We don't need them and it isn't difficult to cut and paste in order to quote someone, is it?

If I want to qoute someone,I usually just C&P the particular comment,and head my post with it. I would like an edit button...sometimes I could punch the laptop when I realise I have made a spelling mistake

Really?

I really would like a thread to be flagged if there's been new posts since I last read it, and to be able to click straight to the new posts. Lots of forums have that feature. Currently I often can't be bothered to trawl through all the stuff I've already read to find any new comments, or try to guess what page it ended on last time I read it.

I would also like a quote facility. Although the main problem with that is that you end up with great chunks of discussion taken up with arguing posters quoting each other all over the shop.

I stopped using the MSE forum because it was so cluttered with rubbish. The quoting thing - well, then people would quote an entire post, making it come up in a little box and interrupt the dialogue, only to add 'yep, same here' or something. I think the Mumsnet forum looks great.1

hoto you have a point - those who misuse the quote function are often in the majority. You're all talking me round with your very convincing arguments.
