Has this been mentioned before? I've only really spent time round these parts on occasion when I've needed some opinions on tricky situations, yes yes, all take no give. But this week I've had some really boring design briefs to work on and I'm struggling to concentrate so this has been a welcome distraction. I work alone and its akin to having a chat in the office, I used to spend a lot of time on MSE forums for that end, but eventually the worthier than thou going-to-the-nth-degree-to-save-1p doctrine round there felt too at odds with my propensity to throw money at problems and I lost interest.

To get to the point - having been poking around mumsnet talk all day I've found the interface quite limiting, being used to MSE. It sounds like a small thing but on other forums being able to 'like' someones comment is a good way of quietly agreeing with their point without having to clog up the thread by actually commenting. Also, being able to quote other peoples comments within your comment to makes for better flow and understanding.

There are other annoying things of this ilk too, but I don't want to drone on and on.... OR - perhaps I'm missing something and have turned into a luddite who doesn't understand that all of these capabilities exist in some magical popup window I've inadvertently disabled?

I see your points ViviPru and see why you have made those particular suggestions, but I guess it boils down to personal taste and I like the simplicity of mn.

The only suggestion I would have, is that I'd like to be able to highlight a group of words to either make them italic or bold, rather than having to put the little marks around each and every word to 'emphasise' them. I often think of doing it, especially in order to quote, but can't be arsed and end up not posting at all!

Other than that, I agree that there are too many people who over use the quote function and it would make things messy here.

Bookmarking eh? How does that work then - that would be fantastic! I've left pages open for days on end before, trying to keep up with a thread inbetween rl activities and struggling to find where I was last reading up to...

AnotherJaffaCake · 02/09/2011 18:59

Jeez if people want to turn MN in NM I'm off - enough of the glitter :o.

ChippingIn · 02/09/2011 19:01

Tee said -

Nope. They don't exist. And we don't need them.

We use words to agree with people here on MN. Not a button. We are not Facebook.

HTH!

and I couldn't agree more!!

Defrocked - well, there are other sites out there you know. We like it how it is thanks very much.

No to 'quote function'
No to 'like' button
No to 'tickers'

Anyone who doesn't like it knows where the door is Grin

bibbitybobbityhat · 02/09/2011 19:02

PLP - the bolding and italicising function has been amended so that you can change the format of a string of words for ages, why don't you try it and see?

ChippingIn · 02/09/2011 19:02

Purple - you can and have been able to for MONTHS (if not a year) Grin

SuePurblybilt · 02/09/2011 19:06

I think saying that anyone who doesn't love every aspect of MN should feck off is a bit silly, users of a site are generally well placed to say what they find positive or negative about how it works. One day one of these threads could actually generate a really positive change. Maybe not the Like button though Grin. In fact, the day the Like button is in, I'll know I'm outnumbered and run for the hills Wink

Having said that, I concede the quote function point - I have only used it on a much smaller forum where it did work well - but there could have been hours or days between posts on a single thread on that site. I do see how it could be messy here so I'm with the Nays.

Hoto · 02/09/2011 19:13

Bookmark function (might only be in MN New) - roll cursor over the bottom right of a post and a wee blue button appears. This saves where you were up to better than an old bus ticket

Strawbezza · 02/09/2011 19:15

Bookmarking is what I was after, I've switched it on and it's great! Just have to remember to do the bookmark action now.

BecauseImWorthIt · 02/09/2011 19:18

You have to be in MN New to do bookmarking. I had to switch from Classic to get it but it's definitely worth it!

Oakmaiden · 02/09/2011 19:20

You can also use the "watch this thread" option to bookmark. I don't have a blue button appearing, so I do it the other way. :)

MardyBra · 02/09/2011 19:22

I find myself trying to bookmark in other forums where I can't.

Ooooohhh, I'm so pleased I asked now!!! Thank you mn for your knowledge, how did I miss that?!

usualsuspect · 02/09/2011 19:28

Can you imagine the shame if no one ever liked your posts

especially if you made the same point as another poster and they got 50 likes for it

SuePurblybilt · 02/09/2011 19:31

YY usual. Like when someone repeats your joke further down the thread and everyone falls over larfing at them. Gives me irrational rage Grin.

I'd feel really rejected if someone didn't 'like' me

BlobChob · 02/09/2011 19:55

It is a bit pants but I've grown to like it. Less is more!

bibbitybobbityhat · 02/09/2011 19:56

Is it really honestly worth it Biwi?

What do you use bookmarks for?

If you're in new, do you get pages Shock?

I can't imagine abandoning Mumsnet Classic.

ViviPru · 02/09/2011 20:04

Ok so to conclude:

  1. Like buttons: (big fat) NO
  2. Quote function: MAYBE - depending on some sort of restriction on use - urgh sounds complicated
Thread navigation: USE YOUR BRAIN & UTILISE THE EXISTING FUNCTIONS (silly ViviPru just noticed a hovering popup at the top of the safari window that I've been batting away continually without realising it contains some of the useful functions I've been lamenting the lack of)
  1. Timed Edit: YES PLEASE - although with which we may not have had the hilarity of Kenobi's "Bluefucker" gaffe earlier.

I'd also quite like to be able to post an image from time to time

OP posts:
ViviPru · 02/09/2011 20:05

ok so I missed "3." damn you lack of timed edit

YANBU

I love this forum but it is seriously as old as the ark in terms of certain things.

I'd like to see a 'like' button, a quote button, the thread starters name on the front page next to the thread and a little update symbol to show if MNHQ have posted on that thread (particularly helpful if they've posted to say they're about to delete the thread)

I don't know why so many people here are so hung up on Netmums...if they claim to hate the site so much, why do they keep talking about it and insisting these standard forum settings are 'a slippery slope'?

I've clicked on a NM link once and never clicked it again...that's because I didn't like the site.

ViviPru · 02/09/2011 20:16

yes worraliberty - the lack of thread starters name next to the thread is really silly.

OP posts:
worraliberty · 02/09/2011 20:17

It is indeed because I don't know which threads to not bother opening Grin

Yes, posting pics would be nice too. I saw a funny one the other day and would have loved to have stuck it on a thread instead of the link to it.

usualsuspect · 02/09/2011 20:41

I though if you used MN new ,the thread starters name was there?

usualsuspect · 02/09/2011 20:42

thought * see need an edit thingie

Empusa · 02/09/2011 20:43

"the thread starters name on the front page next to the thread"

I'm sure MNHQ said something about adding that, maybe I imagined it though Confused

But yes, that would be useful.

Like buttons and quote functions will just make using the site messy and annoying.

Posting pics I'm not sure on. Given the amount of trolls MN gets it could just become a nuisance!
