Has this been mentioned before? I've only really spent time round these parts on occasion when I've needed some opinions on tricky situations, yes yes, all take no give. But this week I've had some really boring design briefs to work on and I'm struggling to concentrate so this has been a welcome distraction. I work alone and its akin to having a chat in the office, I used to spend a lot of time on MSE forums for that end, but eventually the worthier than thou going-to-the-nth-degree-to-save-1p doctrine round there felt too at odds with my propensity to throw money at problems and I lost interest.

To get to the point - having been poking around mumsnet talk all day I've found the interface quite limiting, being used to MSE. It sounds like a small thing but on other forums being able to 'like' someones comment is a good way of quietly agreeing with their point without having to clog up the thread by actually commenting. Also, being able to quote other peoples comments within your comment to makes for better flow and understanding.

There are other annoying things of this ilk too, but I don't want to drone on and on.... OR - perhaps I'm missing something and have turned into a luddite who doesn't understand that all of these capabilities exist in some magical popup window I've inadvertently disabled?

agree ENDLESS QUOTING turns me off

moonstorm · 02/09/2011 18:00

NNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

I LIKE it just as it is!!!

crazynanna · 02/09/2011 18:01

Thank you MNP Wink Whilst we're at it,a 'Wanker' function would be quite useful and well utilised Wink

ViviPru · 02/09/2011 18:01

Alright alright! Anyone would think I'd suggested cancelling Christmas....

strawbezza I have heard there is now a bookmark function, but not on the flavour of MN that I am currently using

GreenEyesandNiceHam · 02/09/2011 18:02

Nononono!

I hate the quote box, loads of quotes within quotes within quotes, for someone to add a smiley face at the bottom.

MSE looks AWFUL, just awful. Don't tinker with us please!

Empusa · 02/09/2011 18:02

Actually the quote function is one of the easiest ways to break a forum and the flow of a thread.

For example,

 • with a quote function you can quote something containing a quote. Which means you end up with something like..
[quoted by] [quoted by] [quoted by] [quoted by] I say this
I say something else
But I think this
I disagree
Which is horrible!!

 • People will be lazy with a quote system, and rather than quoting just the bit they are talking about, they will quote the whole post. Which is a nightmare when the whole post is about 5 paragraphs or longer.

Anyway, design wise, MSE forum are ugly as all hell!! Forums are a bitch to design (anything with user generated content is) so I'm quite glad MN is so clean and easy!

ChaosTrulyReigns · 02/09/2011 18:05

I visit another forum occasionally to check out baby names. Wink

And the quote function is just farking pants.

Seriously a whole page can be taken up with sblurb - there's only actually 17 fresh words at all to read. Angry It really just doesn't scan righ tand makes for worse flow actually. Hopefully everyone on here is articulate enough to precis another's post that they are replying to, or even as adeptly illustrayed above, cut and paste the pertinent comments. Smile

And as for the spelling mistakes? Mhe.

Grin at ViviPru.

It doesn't look as shiny as some sites but it is addictive. You know you want to stay.

Strawbezza · 02/09/2011 18:25

Bookmark function? Where is it and how does it work?

It wastes so much time trying to find where the thread was when I last read it. Which is why I don't do much Mumsnetting.

There's a nice bear. Have a nice bear Bear

TheRealMBJ · 02/09/2011 18:33

Strawbezza, I don't know about the bookmark function but I have set up my posts to be highlighted in the 'Customise' function above. Which means that all I have to do is scroll up to the last time I posted after clicking on a new post within 'Threads I'm on'.

Easy-peasy

defrocked · 02/09/2011 18:42

i hate this forum layout, its so featureless and drab

MardyBra · 02/09/2011 18:43

A timed edit function would be useful, but can you imagine the chaos if there was an untimed one.

AIBU would turn into:

AIBU?
Yes you are.
No I'm not.
But now you've changed your OP.
No I haven't.
Yes you have - you said such and such.
No I didn't.
Yes you did - look I copied it before you amended it.
You're making that up.
No I'm not.
You are a twunt.
So are you.

And so on....

MardyBra · 02/09/2011 18:44

I wandered onto Gransnet the other day (no I'm not quite that old but I clicked onto the link at the top of MN). They have dusky pink colours and no namechanging facilities (to stop those trolling grans).

TheRealMBJ · 02/09/2011 18:44

I love it btw. I think it makes the words speak for themselves

Strawbezza · 02/09/2011 18:46

TheRealMBJ, I've done that too, but what I also want to do is click on a thread I've read before (but not necessarily posted on), and be taken to where I left it on my previous visit.

bibbitybobbityhat · 02/09/2011 18:48

Oooh, really Mardy? No namechanging for the Grans??

I wonder if that's something hq regret about setting up on regular Mumsnet.

TheRealMBJ · 02/09/2011 18:49

Ah! I see.

Empusa · 02/09/2011 18:49

defrocked Featureless? So what do you think it needs?

MardyBra · 02/09/2011 18:52

Strawbezza - I do that - but I can't remember how to set it up. Try customise. I don't think you can do it in MN classic though.

MardyBra · 02/09/2011 18:53

Yes, I wondered that too bibbity.

ChaosTrulyReigns · 02/09/2011 18:54

defrocked?
