Has this been mentioned before? I've only really spent time round these parts on occasion when I've needed some opinions on tricky situations, yes yes, all take no give. But this week I've had some really boring design briefs to work on and I'm struggling to concentrate so this has been a welcome distraction. I work alone and its akin to having a chat in the office, I used to spend a lot of time on MSE forums for that end, but eventually the worthier than thou going-to-the-nth-degree-to-save-1p doctrine round there felt too at odds with my propensity to throw money at problems and I lost interest.

To get to the point - having been poking around mumsnet talk all day I've found the interface quite limiting, being used to MSE. It sounds like a small thing but on other forums being able to 'like' someones comment is a good way of quietly agreeing with their point without having to clog up the thread by actually commenting. Also, being able to quote other peoples comments within your comment to makes for better flow and understanding.

There are other annoying things of this ilk too, but I don't want to drone on and on.... OR - perhaps I'm missing something and have turned into a luddite who doesn't understand that all of these capabilities exist in some magical popup window I've inadvertently disabled?

The thread starters name is there if you go through under the topics, but not through active.

MN have been asked to change that.

Tee Really? Not seeing it in AIBU or Chat Confused And I'm using New rather than Classic.

Empusa · 02/09/2011 20:53

Ok, ignore me. You have to switch it on in Customise Blush

Like buttons and quote functions will just make using the site messy and annoying

How so?

Most people have to quote by using two *'s like I just did up there ^^ anyway.

And a like button wouldn't make the place messy or annoying because it would (I assume) simply sit next to the 'Add message| Report| Message poster' thing that we have above every post.

Empusa · 02/09/2011 21:00

worra All sites I've ever been on with a quote function were a nuisance.

At least using two *'s you tend to only quote the necessary bit of the post. With a quote function people tend to lazily quote an entire post. Which is fine for short posts, but tedious for longer ones. When you are reading a page and over half of the content is actually whole posts from the previous page it gets really annoying and cluttered.

Plus you get the quote within the quote issue, which is known to break a few forums. (Not that I'd ever tried this you must understand Wink)

As for a "Like" button, it makes people lazy with responses. And people become less likely to engage with each other (also seen on other forums).

EricNorthmansMistressOfPotions · 02/09/2011 21:10

A 'like' button would cut conversation short. Instead of saying something people would just click. It would be shit.

The quote boxes are awful, I cannot read a forum with them in. Especially when there are a million quotes all in one box with just a smiley face at the bottom...

Serenitysutton · 02/09/2011 22:15

I don't really understand why you can't quote. It's most unusual to have a forum where you can't

EricNorthmansMistressOfPotions · 02/09/2011 22:33

That's what makes it better than other forums.

fatlazymummy · 02/09/2011 22:39

I personally think a 'quote' function would be a big improvement. I don't see the point of 'like' buttons though. I also don't feel the need for sigs or tickers.

MardyBra · 03/09/2011 00:20

Actually I'm coming around to the idea of tickers because I think they would be used in an ironic way on MN - e.g. 4 mins since I last had bumsex.
