to think that evicting hundreds of travellers from their site is unfair and immoral

It's an illegal site. They didn't have planning permission. It's greenbelt...

but it used to be a car scrapyard (not rolling fields and thatched cottages then), they own the land and it's right next to a legal settlement.

They've obviously broken the law by settling here, but on balance, wouldn't it be more ethical to let them be? The children are settled at school and getting an education. Lots of people are prejudiced against gypsies and travellers but they've got to live somewhere.

I've seen the news articles about it. It makes me feel sad.

I saw Beesimo on here the other day I think. I'm sure she said 'her people' were Romany, but it turned out 'her people' amounted to one great grandparent IIRC.

YaMaYaMa · 02/09/2011 19:27

Oh, well at least there was some truth to it then. I thought she was a troll.

kelly2000 · 02/09/2011 19:35

I have read about plenty of middle class people have buildings knocked down as they did not get planning permission. There was one millionaire who had to rip out lots of changes he hd made to a listed building, and I think he got a huge fine. It costs him hundreds upon hundreds of thousands, even though he had not hurt anyone else. Why was no-one turning up to protest on his behalf, like people are here.
One woman was complaining that she as lived there for six and a half years , but the council have been trying to get them out for a decade, and they were told they were there illegally and would be evicted eight years ago, so she only as herself to blame.

SarahStratton · 02/09/2011 19:50

That's a very dilute truth though tbh. Not exactly first hand knowledge.

The children are their parents responsibility. Or at least, should be. They should be looking to themselves regarding their childrens' problems, not blaming everyone else.

I've found this thread fascinating really. I saw a bit about Dale Farm on Daybreak this morning and it didnt really give a full picture of the situation at all. Having read this thread, I wonder if Vanessa Redgrave knows the full story, in terms of the original site being a small scrapyard with permission for only 10 houses/the repeatedly used delaying tactics/the refusal to integrate into the local community etc.

There was a guy interviewed who lives next to the site and he said he'd received death threats but Vanessa Redgrave sort of sneered 'Oh him, well he's famous now isnt it he'. Bit shitty of her really isnt her? I'm sure there are no sprawling illegal camps full of 'travellers' next to her house.

SarahStratton · 02/09/2011 19:52

Vanessa Redgrave needs a good kick up the arse and into reality.

noddyholder · 02/09/2011 20:16

Someone was saying that VR has land that could accommodate them don't see her offering though!

SarahStratton · 02/09/2011 20:21

How utterly disgusting and inhumane of her.

lachesis · 02/09/2011 20:21

I said that, noddy. She's like the Bono of the acting world - do as I say, not as I do.

YaMaYaMa · 02/09/2011 20:23

She didnt come across well at all. Adrien Chiles looked very unconvinced Grin

noddyholder · 02/09/2011 20:34

I heard someone on the radio too The redgraves are minted so put your money where your mouth is!

Are Irish travellers Roma too? I thought they were a separate group.

maypole1 · 02/09/2011 20:48

She can gave them come live with her

I think that is the point. Redgrave is a bit like the politicians who are quite happy with the general public having to put up with a difficult, scary situation but they do not experience it for themselves.

A while back I remember reading something about travellers setting up camp in the vicinity of an MP's dwelling. I seem to recollect them being shifted off this site rather quickly.

I know this situation may affect children but the travellers are taking the P IMHO.

SingingTunelessly · 02/09/2011 21:20

Does it matter if they are a separate group? This is a group of people who have decided to build their own housing estate on Green Belt land. Why should they be immune from the general planning laws?

scarlettsmummy2 · 02/09/2011 21:28

ok, so they have broken planning laws and now are being evicted. What happens next?? where should they live? should they all be moved into the private rental market? there certainly isn't enough council housing available, and beyond that many don't want to live in houses.

So everyone that says evict? How do you propose they are dealt with now??

banana 87, would you say that other people who aren't born in the uk should **ck back off to their own country or is it only the irish??? just wondering because I am also Irish and wonder if you would say that to someone else with a non white heritage.............

alemci · 02/09/2011 21:39

No i don't think banana is saying that Scarlett. I think she is just fed up with situation and how the travellers seem to be playing the 'ethnic' card.

Teachermumof3 · 02/09/2011 21:39

I thought that many of the families already do own their own homes back in Ireland!?

SingingTunelessly · 02/09/2011 21:42

Well the problem is they DO purchase cheap Green Belt Land and then build on it. Just because they decide they want to. Travellers do seem to think they are above and beyond the Planning Legislation in this regard. Whereas no-one else would getting PP on a piece of Green Belt Land to build a house they think playing the Traveller card will do it for them.
