On BBC local news in NE tonight: sorry I'm too much of a luddite to link it.

Anyway, establishment is The Lakeside pub and restaurant in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear. A woman was told to leave whilst having a meal with her family for breastfeeding her 6 week old baby. She obviously stated that this was illegal, but they humiliated her by insisting she left.

Whether it is right or wrong people eating their dinner out do not want to see a womans breast whilst they are eating, makes no odds that she is feeding a baby it makes people feel uncomfortable, and I know it is their problem but when you are a business you have to go with the majority not the minority.

catgirl1976 · 30/08/2011 19:33

grape thread? I missed that - was it good?

Maiavan · 30/08/2011 19:34

Bubble then people should grow the fuck up and not get all hysterical every time they see a breast. "OMG a breast!!!! OMG!!! Somebody do something"

Grow up! Dont look now but we are adults, breasts should not be a source of snigger, blush, hysterics after 16!

Its a breast ffs, a milk container, a means to feed your child, thats it.

Feminine · 30/08/2011 19:34

exactly catgirl

In fact these type of situations always make me Hmm

It is almost impossible to make a 'show' while b/feeding ...that would take some talent and massive tassels!

What probably happened is someone got put off their crinkle cut fries and decided to kick up a storm...over Jack shit!

sheeplikessleep · 30/08/2011 19:35

what was the grape thread?

worraliberty · 30/08/2011 19:35

Nah it was a pile of shite catgirl Grin

DirtyMartini · 30/08/2011 19:36

Her level of discretion is in no way relevant. The law does not say 'it is illegal to ban a woman from breastfeeding in public unless she's indiscreet, in which case go ahead and chuck her out '

Birdsgottafly · 30/08/2011 19:36

I would like the OP to come back because this story isn't on the website but a poll into whether people feel uncomfortable seeing a mother breastfeed is.

Theres less boob on show when a woman is breastfeeding than most display on a night out (where i live anyway).

Fabby-A baby being breastfed doesn't cause any disruption. Unlike smoking it's illegal to ban it.

bushymcbush · 30/08/2011 19:36

Fabby, the main reason that people 'don't want to see it' as you put it (although I have never come across one of those people in 3 years of continuous bf-ing), is because they find it strange and unusual, because they have never seen it.

So, we do it in secret so as not to offend anyone, and they still never see it, and it remains strange and unusual. Stalemate.

It is not disgusting. It does not need to be done in private. It is a baby eating. I eat in public.

FWIW I will not be going to that restaurant OP.

thisisnoton · 30/08/2011 19:37

Jesus, what a reaction!

Story was on tv news and I'm on my phone, hence just assumed I couldn't find link.

Woman involved was feeding very discretely, as she showed the camera on news item. I just wanted to publicise it as found it disgusting and discriminatory. Not a regular MNetter, pop in occasionally but was just looking to make people aware.

OP posts:
Andrewofgg · 30/08/2011 19:38

Agree with OP unless she was being deliberately showoffy and offensive which is highly unlikely. God all bloody mighty, it's what they were designed for.

pigletmania · 30/08/2011 19:38

Well Fabby don't look Grin. When a woman is bf you don't notice. Would you say this to a ff mum, and yes I ff my dd. The baby has a right to have its lunch/dinner in a clean, hygenic environment, not in a loo where people, piss, poo and vomit, yuck Envy

TandB · 30/08/2011 19:39

Fortunately, Fabby, no-one involved in drafting the relevant anti-discrimination laws appears to have given the slightest shit what you do or do not wish to see while eating your dinner.

Maybe you should complain about your views not being taken into consideration and they might change the law.

FriggFRIGG · 30/08/2011 19:39

you know what,i have a problem with the breasts on show all over the magazines and bill board posters, and TV and gawd know where else.

if a woman is feeding her baby in a restaurant so what.

if you dont like it,avert your eyes, you do not need to stare at her, just get on with your meal.

FFS its A BABY who is HUNGRY,why would anyone want to deny a baby milk?
for the sake of some idiotic adults who haven't learned its rude to stare.

pigletmania · 30/08/2011 19:40

what like this Fabby BiscuitBiscuit let it all hang out

worraliberty · 30/08/2011 19:40

Well there's nothing anywhere on the internet about this story

If something doesn't turn up soon, MNHQ may end up deleting it incase they get into legal trouble.

BoneyBackJefferson · 30/08/2011 19:40

I would like too know both sides of the story before I boycotted anywhere.

TandB · 30/08/2011 19:41

And how is it "fair enough" to break the law if the woman was being less discreet than the observers liked. There isn't a section in the act that says "All the aforementioned rights and entitlements shall be forfeited if a nursing mother swings from the rafters naked while feeding her infant".

BuckminsterFullerene · 30/08/2011 19:41

there's something wrong with a society which deems breasts on display in a daily national 'news'paper as acceptable, but feeding a baby as obscene.

I've seen more of my colleagues tits on display thanks to their clothing at work (of course, a woman must be 'sexy' and show cleavage Hmm) than your average BFing mother displays.

Ridiculous

Fabby & Bubbles, I do hope you're on the wind up.

thisisnoton · 30/08/2011 19:42

Erm, I'm not making this up, as some have implied! Just posted, had my tea and came back to accusations!

Woman involved is a midwife. It was on BBC local news at 6:30 tonight. Can someone else in the north east please say they saw it! I don't just have some vendetta against this pub.

OP posts:
rogersmellyonthetelly · 30/08/2011 19:42

I've been asked to leave a restaurant for bf, for the record, there was absolutely nothing to be seen, if the waiter hadn't been stood over me gawking no one would have known, I had a vest top pulled down and my main long sleeved top was covering everything else. Dd was 3 months old at the time and latched herself on in the blink of an eye.
Bf a baby usually involves showing a lot less breast than many women's low cut tops, and I personally find it far less offensive than someone with low rise jeans showing the crack of their arse.
If you wouldn't ask a ff mum not to feed their baby, you shouldnt ask a bf not to.
For the record, I stayed put, and Insisted that they call the police if they wanted me to move, whilst pointing out that they were breaking the law by insisting that I leave or stop feeding.

FabbyChic · 30/08/2011 19:43

I've only ever seen a baby breast fed once, and you couldn't see anything thought it was sweet. It wouldn't bother me to be honest if I was out.

However, some people don;t like it and don't want to see it, as a business what can you do?

I'm posting on the other side of the coin, because when I had children 23 and 18 years ago I never took them out at feeding time ever. They were always at home or we were indoors somewhere.

You plan your life around your child it's what you do.

Can't for the life of me see what's wrong with someone seeing a bit of tit. There are far far worse sights walking the streets with flab hanging out of their cropped tops and leggings! It's a woman feeding a baby, not someone getting a gobble job on top of the table ffs.

FabbyChic · 30/08/2011 19:45

People don't want to see TITs when they are eating their dinner.
