AIBU?

To want to spend £20k on holidays and nice things?

well almost!

I want to put 4k aside for a family trip to florida
Split the remaining £16k between me and dh
Leaving me with £8k to spend.
Want to take dd and me to hong kong and dubai, two places i have always wanted to go but could never a) go because of flying phobia and b) afford it. That about £4k.
Then a trip to vegas, grand canyon and california for me and dh. Bout 2k i reckon which leaves me with 2k, which i will probably use as spendng money.

So AIBU to just want to blow it on nice things? We have a fairly small and cheap mortgage, and i have a minimal amount on my card.

Don't worry, you don't need to apologise. I know you can't put anything in the OP Smile

TBH, I do think if you're having to ask on here you must be having some doubts. Do it if you're sure about it, but please don't be prickly if other people wouldn't do the same.

Take 4k and spend it on a holiday to Florida. Pay the mortgage off with other 15k. Assuming 100k mortgage at 5%, you will save 100 a month. Put this in the bank with the remaining 1k. Next year, you and husband can go to Grand Canyon. Don't bother with Dubai. It's nothing but a big shopping mall.

Of course i have doubts and yes thats why im posting. I know that i shoukd be putting something away for a rainy day, or uni or whatever but the other part of me thinks if this hadnt happened and i didnt get the money i would have to pay for those things anyway, so its just like way-hey Grin

I think STA Travel has an age limit. It's mainly for students and all of their adverts in the paper say "Before you hit 35".

I see from your profile that you're 34. You may not be able to use them.

I'd save half, and go crazy with the other half.

I agree that you may be underestimating costs slightly, especially if you want to really really enjoy it. DH and I get to go on holiday, but we are always on a strict budget and I do find myself wishing I had a little bit more to spend on little luxuries on holiday or at duty free.

But go for it! Sounds like you deserve it, and you only live once. You don't have to justify it to anyone.

It really bugs me how anyone who mentions having more than a spare tenner gets accused of boasting on here.

I think you should spend it on whatever you want and get the most out of it with your trips of a lifetime.

My son is going to give me 20k in a few years, Im spending it on plastic surgery. A face and boob lift.

I'd rather those than a holiday.

I wouldn't bother paying off the mortgage tbh esp if only a smallish one anyway. I don't see a mortgage in the same way as other debts. Have some fun whilst you all can.

But you do probably need to up your budgets for indidivual holidays. Florida is likely to be more than that if you are limited to school holidays. We went in July/August and it wasn't cheap - csts of going to US fulls top have increased a lot over the years in our experience.

How about, spend half, save half. That way you can 'waste' £10k with no guilt, but have a 'slush fund' for the future. (And yes, that can be a big 50th holiday if you don't end up spending it on anything else!)

Bloody good on yer then Smile

We are not limited to school hols as dd not coming and the ds's are little. We have a friend with a villa in florida so that comes at a discount.
The hkg/dub trip is £3.5k all priced up.
Havent properly looked at vegas/canyon yet.

I am with you on the mortgage. Its a lot less than 100k and i just cant see the benefit of paying it off with this one off money. The card i can understand and that will be clear anyway

Is the compensation something that is there to support you with a problem in the future or just for something that happened that will have no affect on your future?

If the first then I think you do need to save a chunk, just in case.

If the second then can I come with you? I will carry your bags Grin. Very jealous and enjoy.

lydia i am splitting £16 k with dh so i woukd only have £8k.
I guess i could blow £4 on mine and dds trip and save £4k.

Hell if im giving half to dh why am i paying for a trip to america out of my half Smile
thats a good outcome. Half on mine and dds trip and stick half in an ISA for whatever Smile
