AIBU?

To want to spend £20k on holidays and nice things?

mosschops30 · 28/08/2011 21:47

well almost!

I want to put 4k aside for a family trip to florida
Split the remaining £16k between me and dh
Leaving me with £8k to spend.
Want to take dd and me to hong kong and dubai, two places i have always wanted to go but could never a) go because of flying phobia and b) afford it. That about £4k.
Then a trip to vegas, grand canyon and california for me and dh. Bout 2k i reckon which leaves me with 2k, which i will probably use as spendng money.

So AIBU to just want to blow it on nice things? We have a fairly small and cheap mortgage, and i have a minimal amount on my card.

Oooh, I don't think it's a stealth boast!

I reckon OP's probably just a bit excited at getting some "disposable" income.

Go for it! As a family we spend about £20k per annum on holidays and weekends away. We love our holidays and work hard to pay for them, in my opinion there is nothing better that 'get away from it all' time with the family and as you've got little in the way of debt then there's no reason not to enjoy the money.

You may need more than £4k for Florida depending on how many there are in the family and when you go. And I would allow more for Vegas too - went last year for a week and I am sure it was a fair bit more than that for 3 of us, esp pnce you take into account food and drink and daily costs.

Oh, and yanbu to want to do some nice big holidays whilst you can.

Er no, we live normally and dont have lots of money, go on 2 hols a year, both europe, so am not bragging about my millions.

To answer someone else, i have been cured of my phobia which is why i want to go to fab places i coukd never have dreamed of going to before.

I am not a static caravan type of girl.

Everyone has said 'do the bellagio'. Would only do 2 nights vegas, dh couldnt cope with more

But i dont want to do it cheaply, i want to stay in fab hotels i could never normally afford.

Then you cannot afford to all of those trips you want to do in fab hotels. You are seriously underestimating how much money all these holidays will cost.

£20k will not pay for four luxury holidays. Your trip through the USA will cost you about £6000 or more if you do it using fab hotels, etc.

Christ I went to Egypt for one lousy week and it cost me £800 including spending moeny. I cannot beleive you think a trip through Las Vegas, Grand Canyon and California in fab hotels will be £1k each.

Go on the holidays but either cut down the number or do the holidays on the cheap.

I think YABU to plan on Vegas/Grand Canyon/California in just over a week. If you are going to flynout there then take your time and see it properly. The drive between the Grand Canyon and Vegas can be amazing and take you through lesser known National Parks which I would argue beat the over touristy Grand Canton hands down. We did that area in 3 weeks and yet didn't feel we had done it justice.

Hmm, I probably wouldn't give half of the money to DP if it was me, tbh.

I would spend maybe 5-6 k on travel and put the rest away for a rainy day.

But it's your money, your choice-enjoy Smile

You can seriously reduce your Vegas costs by chosing the days you spend there. Friday and weekends are a lot dearer than mid week for example.

No idea, really. I wouldn't be comfortable with blowing money like that but it's your money.

CLicked on your profile to see what you do for a living and saw you have three children. Is it not a bit tight to take only one of them away? Unless there are issues with your DD which you haven't mentioned.

Dunno what your claim is for so I don't know if this is going to some kind of drip feed.

I hope not.

We paid almost 4K just for flights to Florida for 5 of us so you may want to check your budgets, agree that they are all very optimistic.

Thank you for those taking this thread as its meant. Its not a boast, we have 3dcs so rarely any disposable income.
2 years ago i went through hell, thought i was going to die, suffered physically and mentally and none of it my fault.
The 20k (if it comes) is compensation. Would i go through it again for £20k NO! I wouldnt go through it again for £20 million but i am sure i wanna have some fun and enjoy this money at their expense

There's not much to do in Hong Kong IMHO but you can have it as a free stop over to Australia :)

For our honeymoon last yearvwe did Hong Kong - Sydney - Auckland - Wellington - LA - home. We sorted our own Internal flights in New Zealand & hired a car to drive from LA to Las Vegas. Took 3 weeks and cost about 3k for flights.

Do it, but go to a good travel agent who specialises in worldwide flights. I bet you could have Dubai as a free stop over to somewhere else too. Sta travel were great for us.

Do it do it do it! I would be a bit nerdy and maybe put £5k in an ISA just in case for a rainy day, then yes I think if I could (no debts/giant mortgage) blow the lot.

If you go to California, please please please go to Napa, visit lots of wineries, eat at French Laundry. Then please please please eat at In and out burger as many times as you can. The BEST burger you will ever eat.

Trying not to be precious here Wink, but try to find a small amount for your favourite good cause as well. They'd love it.

Have the trip of a lifetime - fill yer boots, take loads of photos and have a ball.

Life is for living and not putting things away for 'best'.

I once got a 'lump sum' and I had the choice of spending it on council tax, petrol, electricity, gas etc etc.

I was young free and single. I have a wealth of memories from travelling and made so many friends.

I could have played it safe and paid 75% of it in tax on petrol, gas, electricity, water, council tax, road tax, insurance, car insurance, house insurance, contents insurance, building insurance, life assurance, tv licence, window cleaners etc etc.

I chose to live for a year. Gordon Brown didn't miss me.. It was wonderful walking into my bank and just cancelling everything for a whole year.

I now pay 40% tax.

Time to pay I guess.

You are seriously underestimating the costs if you want to do 'nice' hotels, especially Hong Kong if you want to go for any length of time!

YANBU to want to spank a lot on 'fun' experiences, but all on holidays? Would you not want something to show for it? A new car? An extension? A new kitchen?

What sort of savings do you have? do you have any rainy day fund? (good rule of thumb is 6 months bills & mortgage money should be saved). Do you think your DCs will be at uni soon? If so, do you think you might want them to have less exciting holidays now and be able to help them leave uni without stupidly high debts...

Given the nature of the claim inky a donation to the birth trauma association would definately be in order Smile

i have always wanted to go but could never a) go because of flying phobia

Are you planning to spend a portion of your windfall setting about getting a cure for your phobia? If not, your plans are pie in the sky and you're not going to be up there flying hither and thither.
