AIBU to think Bs at GCSE are ok?

Some issues with DS and GCSEs/6th form. He didn't get the grades he was predicted (As and As) but then I didn't expect him to as he doesn't put much effort into anything apart from his x box. He got mainly Bs, a couple of As, a couple of Cs and a couple of Ds. I was quite happy until I started reading the secondary education forum where people are tearing their hair out because their dc's didn't get straight As and may have blown their oxbridge chances. I get the impression that anything less than an A just isn't worth the paper it's written on. He could have done loads better but Bs are OK aren't they?

Because it is still relevanf?

I read Skipton's post with interest, fir example.

I want my my kids to get a/b's, as if they don't it means they were either lazy (my fault through nurture/nature!) or badly taught (my fault for choosing wrong school)

On the other hand I know I may be unrealistic and may have to change my expectations!

Defensive? Hmm

It's not all about you. Some children ARE lazy (my dd is - catastrophically so). Some teachers ARE shite, even in schools which are otherwise good.

There is also a third option- that they aren't bright enough in that particular way. But I suppose as someone has already said GCSEs are really easy, that option gets discounted for Mumsnet children.........

I miss Fabby, thought she was back for a second.

BabyGanoush · 22/04/2015 23:00

Yes Hakkuyt, don't tell me my kids are not bright Shock

But seriously, I am a bit allergic to the whole "brightness" adoration in the UK.

My kids are maybe not brighter than anyone else, who can say and how can it be measured anyway?

Oldest has SEN and cannot spell for toffee.

So in real life I will sing hallelujah if he gets a C for English.

But this is MN not real life Grin
