To be irritated by people who say they can't lose weight?

umm just eat less and get out more. Or am I being unreasonable?

You try losing weight with congenital hypothyroidsm. I've thrown £100s at WW, SW et al since my teens and yes, I get short term results. Maybe a stone or two. But until the farking GP can be arsed to sort out my thyroid levels, nothing short of a gastric band or stomach bypass is going to help. I eat relatively healthily, and I swim four times a week.

But because I'm underreplaced, I continue to put weight on, leaving me even more underreplaced, so I put more weight on. Its a vicious cycle. And yes, I have 6-weekly TFT's to try and restore the balance, but the GP is refusing to look into why my levels are all over the place. So I just have to get on and do the best I can.

"people who can't keep their house tidy (just put things away after you've used them)"

That's a whole other can of worms, can't manage that at all.........

eurochick · 24/08/2011 17:49

I would guarantee that (people with medical issues aside) if the people who say they can't lose weight were to go on a calorie counting site, find out what is their daily calorie requirement based on height, weight, age and activity level and then keep a food diary for a week, they would find that although they think they have cut down they are eating more than they need. I know I was when I tried it.

At work I often used to snack on flapjacks rather than cakes or biscuits. When I tried calorie counting, I discovered that flapjacks were the devil's work. Pret's Love Bar is over 400 cals. At 30+ with a desk job my daily cal allowance is only around 1700 so that was a massive chunk of it, gone in a snack. I changed a few habits and the extra pounds that were clinging on despite upping my gym visits came off in a few weeks.

A few hundred years ago you skinny folk would be dead and us fatties would be living it up Grin Not our fault we store food/fat for the winter better than you!

ChunkyPickle · 24/08/2011 17:51

Sure, that sounds easy, but if you don't have an automatic off switch then it's actually a lot of work manually monitoring every single thing, every single portion to make sure you aren't eating too much.

I know that I don't have an off-switch, because when pregnant I magically gained one. Suddenly I stopped feeling any urge to eat - I could stop at one biscuit, or partway through a plate full of food if I'd eaten enough. Now that I'm not pregnant any more I'm back to only feeling extremes (absolutely famished and horribly full) so I have to pay much more attention to how much I'm eating.

northernruth · 24/08/2011 17:53

That off switch is hormonal and is to do with the production of a hormone (Letpin?) people with the "fat gene" don't produce the relevant hormone to tell them to stop eating.

Fluffycloudland77 · 24/08/2011 17:53

I agree with op, I am a size 8 now but I was a 14 when 15 years old due to poor food choices. I dropped 9lbs when I gave up margarine due to the methods of palm oil production earlier this year.

I worked in the NHS for 10 years and people will spout any old crap as to why they are overweight.

ChunkyPickle · 24/08/2011 17:57

Interesting northernruth... I'm going to assume that some smart bods somewhere are working on that as a diet pill then :)

Meanwhile I just have to stick with the 'easy' path of eating less (and exercising more)... thank goodness that's such a simple thing :)

Becaroooo · 24/08/2011 17:59

I could just come off the meds I need and watch the weight fall off (and be crippled by pain)???

Autism induced eating disorder here. Does eating less and getting out more cure autism? Wow, didn't know that.

Firstly and foremost and underactive thyroid does not make you fat.

I have an underactive thyroid and it did not cause me to put on 2 stone eating 6 donuts one after the other, sweets and shit did.

Having an underactive thyroid did not stop me from losing 2 stone. Im still what I call fat as Im a size 12 at 5ft 2" weigh 10 stone. Need to lose another stone to get rid of my pregnant stomach, but why haven't I? Cos Im too fucking lazy.

There really is no excuse for fat other than lazyness, being on the other end of it being fat and eating too much is what I did which caused me to be a size 16. I was huge and round.

Why? Cos I ate too much and sat on my arse all day long.

Sorry but I agree with the OP and having experience of it and having been through it I totally understand why she has posted what she has.

Go flame me if you like, but I have been fat, I'm still fat and I'm only fat because I eat too much of the wrong foods.

BeerSnake · 24/08/2011 18:04

Ok sorry only mean people without a valid medical reason.

OP posts:
kaiteysmumma · 24/08/2011 18:20

Yeah, they are Paula. I take Levothyroxine for it. You have regular thyroid function tests to see how much of the hormone your body is producing, (none in my case) and then you are prescribed the drug dependent on that amount.

Fabby, I best ring the GP and tell her that then. Seems all shes been telling me all these years is utter bollocks. FYI, when my thyroid levels were properly managed, up until I was 16 or so, I was a size 12. It was only when my GP practice changed, and it wasn't being managed as well, that I started to put the weight on, without any change to diet or exercise. So how does your theory fit that one?

cardibach · 24/08/2011 18:24

An underactive thyroid is treated with thyroxine tablets. THey don't work quite the same as your own thyroxine and your maetabolic rate is not responsive as you take the same amount everyday regardless. It will not completel replicate your own body systems, so weight gain can happen after getting thyroxine and, certainly, weight loss can be difficult. Low thyroxine levels also cause depression, so can lead to over eating if you are that way inclined.

cardibach · 24/08/2011 18:24

BimboNo5 · 24/08/2011 18:29

'bored of the excuses'

Why are people excusing themselves to you? And why would you care less let alone be fed up?

Whatmeworry · 24/08/2011 18:30

Now why is it that when you see a shit stirring post like this, the poster is nearly always Very New to MN? What do they teach Newbies in the FAQ?

FabbyChic · 24/08/2011 18:32

I never put on any weight taking thyroxin, the donuts made me put on weight, I got through six every other day and they were covered with icing.
