Found on MSE Forums

"Newbie Alert

MSE requests you give newbies a chance - please be especially nice."

Should we adopt that here? Some seem to get their sick kicks in scaring newbies off by being particularly nasty, shouldn't posters be nice to newbies?

You're shit stirring again Mitmoo. I haven't seen any specific nastiness geared towards 'newbies' - they mostly get warmly welcomed and drawn in nicely. However, if said 'newbie' storms in spouting shite then they'll likely get told just the same as anyone else.

PerryCombover · 24/08/2011 07:57

yes we should and we are

we are lovely

QuintessentialShadow · 24/08/2011 07:59

What Chumlee said.

QuintessentialShadow · 24/08/2011 08:00

And ditto perry.

Tortoiseonthehalfshell · 24/08/2011 08:00

I still remember that MSE thread where a poster from here, with no money and no food for small children (due to Big Supermarket fuckup, not her own), asked for help and got utterly, utterly flayed alive.

Lovely people, MSE.

Mitmoo · 24/08/2011 08:00

Chumlee there is me asking for people to be nice and foul mouthed abuse follows.

Prove the point really.
Thanks Chum

tortoise that is the kind of behaviour that you really shouldn't find on line, sadly it happens too often. Some are lovely, others are like those in your example. Sad really.

What's MSE?

Mitmoo · 24/08/2011 08:12

Money Saving Expert, someone flagged it up to me a couple of weeks back, it's really good. They have boost your incomes forums, how to get refunds and basically stretch your money further.

How are we meant to know who is a newbie??? On mse it tells you doesn't it? Here everyone is the same, even you Wink

glitterkitten · 24/08/2011 08:16

What chumlee said. I'm a relative newbie and am still waiting for my apology mitmoo after you accused me of being involved in a discussion "bullying" you when I hadn't.

KAZAMM · 24/08/2011 08:17

Tortoise I remember that thread. I think she was in a remote location but she had support from here but was totally flamed on MSE for reasons I can't remember.

Anyway there are so many parts to mumsnet and I think if you have a good look about before jumping right in then you will see many supportive threads. If you only read AIBU then you only see one side to mumsnet. I think you're being unfair OP.

Ilythia · 24/08/2011 08:18

I'm with tortoise, the worst behaviour I have seen is by MSE to newbies, hence the fact that they need the message.

On here, if a newbie starts a hello message then 99% of the time they are welcomed, however, a lot of 'newbie' threads are contraversial and so people instantly get suspicious due to the troll history on here.

You can say 'be nice to newbies' until you are blue in teh face, I doubt it will work (I'm looking at you MSE)

Nah, stupid people are stupid people, no matter how long they've been posting. As someone said, how is anyone to know how long a person has been here, and does it matter?
People are not really unpleasant here, what generally happens is that if a poster is being utterly unreasonable, it will be pointed out (what with it being AIBU and all). With ever increasing doses of humour usually.

Funny people with a sense of humour and a degree of self-awareness are always easier to engage with than self-obsessed, humourless hysterics.

The self-obsessed humourless ones often end up flouncing, and yelling 'you're all bullying bjtches' as they hurtle past in a blaze of self-combusting glory. It's eye-catching, and might skew the perspective of anyone hadn't been lurking for a bit first. Grin

Boak @ linky

AuntieMonica · 24/08/2011 08:38

i agree with the PP who say no-one can tell you're a newbie around here unless you flag it up yourself, and as long as you don't wade into everything with all guns blazing, attentionseeking and as if you're the new 'bright young thing' then you're fine.

a bit like RL, no?

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 24/08/2011 08:56

If a newbie posts something like

  • Tesco's have substituted peach bubble bath for the chicken I have ordered AIBU to think they are twats.
I suspect the vast majority of replies will agree with them.

If they post

  • You are all a bunch of misandrist screeching harpies who should get back into the kitchen and stay there.
I think the response might be a shade less positive and helpful
GypsyMoth · 24/08/2011 09:44

What's the point of this?

Telling mumsnet what to do?

Is Mitmoo still here, moaning about how simply vaile Mumsnet is?

You know, if I wasn't that enamoured with a community of ONLINE people, I'd probably just like, y' know, log off or summat...

GypsyMoth · 24/08/2011 09:52

No, mitmoo is like a dog with a bone.....
