I've always been quite anti smoking had a gran who dies of lung cancer, but since I was pregnant with DD and now that I'm out and about with her it really angers me when people are smoking in public areas, if it were up to me I'd ban smoking in all public places ie high streets, door ways to, restaurants, childrens play areas etc and don't even get me started on the bit outside the hospital and make people smoke in smoking rooms or back streets. I got abuse from a woman the other day who came over to speak to DD and puffed her smoke all over her when I asked her not to.

From here

Very roughly

NHS costs - £100 billion
Smoking makes the government £10 billion
Smoking costs ? £2 billion

thank you smokers Grin

michelleseashell · 23/08/2011 11:49

It's threads like this that make me realise why I moved to Mumsnet. What's the opposite of a shit list? All you smokers are going on mine! Ooh a hit list! You're all on my hit list! You can do no wrong in my eyes. Start an aibu about how you smashed up a public toilet because you dropped a pound in the pan and I'm going to be backing you up all the way! :o

Oh and Drum Drum Drum! Drum mild or Drum gold as it must be called now. Blue Drum smells like bacon.

alphabettyspagghetti · 23/08/2011 12:11

PMSL at the Hit List.

toniguy · 23/08/2011 12:28

Well look everyone- read sardines post, all us smoke free people should be darn grateful to the puffers. They are sacrificing theirs and their childrens health, wrinkling themselves prematurely and rapidly achieving cats arse fag mouths all for our benefit. We get more NHS provision thanks to them.
Keep puffing, suckers! Smile

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 23/08/2011 12:36

SardineQueen... there's a bit missing from your accounts:

NHS costs - £100 billion
Smoking makes the government £10 billion
Smoking costs ? £2 billion
Payment to NHS from smokers' taxes - £

If you could just input the figure, that would be helpful, otherwise I might think you are a politician.

Could you please blow downwind of Chiswick, Corvax... many thanks. Grin

Even though I gave up five years ago, every now and again I get a fleeting feeling that I'd like a cigarette, not a craving, just a fleeting wish. Bizarre.

toniguy · 23/08/2011 12:53

As i said in above post - Glad to see you're doing your bit and paying extra tax to the govt! In fact please keep going and finish the packet Grin

4madboys · 23/08/2011 13:06

puffs smoke at the pc screen ( i am sat by an open patio door and my kids are in another room)

i dont smoke around my kids or other people, but i will smoke outside away from people.

i smoke roll ups and i like them, i gave up for 9 yrs and then spent a week in psych ward after having ds4, EVERYONE smoked, the staff and the patients so i started again, i felt guilt as hell but after discussing it with my psych figured if it helped my mh then what the hell. my mh is fine now and i did stop whilst preg and bfeeding dd, but then started again.

i dont smoke much but it is MY non mummy thing to do and i like it so 3)

toniguy · 23/08/2011 13:09

Good good- more money for the govt coffers! Great thread!

Salmotrutta · 23/08/2011 13:30

Here?s how I see it:

Cigarette tax results in a net gain of £8 billion pounds to the Treasury

No matter how they spend it it is a net gain

We smokers should demand it all goes into the NHS ? then you non-smokers can benefit too, to the tune of £8 billion worth of resources.

Oh, but wait, you obviously would not want to gain from this as it?s immoral, right?

Just like you probably already refuse to benefit from any other portion of public services that are funded by the net gain of £8 billion cigarette tax?

You already take that stance right? Because you are so worthy and good.

No? Thought not.

smartyparts · 23/08/2011 13:35

I was at Atlanta airport recently and they had one of these.

Looked foul inside, from what we could see through the fug, but at least the smokers got to smoke and the rest of us didn't stink.

toniguy · 23/08/2011 13:52

Salmotrotta- who said anything about 'immoral'? Nothing immoral about smoking. Rather smelly and expensive, and not something most of us' choose to do (and I admit, the fact that kids are far more likely to take up smoking if one or both parents are smokers is enough to put 'me off- but thats not a moral issue, it's a parenting choice, like what you feed your kids)

No- I'm perfectly happy to benefit from the additional tax smokers pour into the govt coffers- why wouldn't I be? All the financial advantages without the disadvantages of being a smoker!

Tbh I think smoking now is such a minority activity, that it really hardly impacts on the rest of us most of the time, after all smokers are the ones who have to go out during a cinema film or pub meal when they need a fag. It would piss me off if someone chose to sit near 'me outdoors in a cafe or on the beach and lit up , because that's plain bad manners, but tbh most people on here seem to be puffing away at their computer screens. I cant understand why any intelligent person chooses to smoke, unless they have really bad anxiety or something and rely on it, but its an issue about lifestyle choice not a morality issue, in the same way as you cant accuse obese people of being 'immoral' for eating shit. It's just not a great idea to do it- but no moral issue at all.

Salmotrutta · 23/08/2011 14:16

Fair enough toniguy - but I always find that smoker bashers on here are very smug and holier-than-thou.
And tend to bang on about costs to the NHS etc. in a moralistic ranty tone.
And the majority of people on here who are smokers do not appear to smoke inside - some maybe but most point out that they go into their gardens.

toniguy · 23/08/2011 14:22

Really? Ive never heard anyone say smoking is 'immoral'. I think most people who don't like it just feel its rather smelly, very expensive and not a fabulous idea all round, but I don't think its an issue of morality.
And I've never heard anyone say they are going to decline any publicly funded service which smokers' tax contributes towards- what a bizarre idea!

catus · 23/08/2011 14:25

I LOVE smoking, and I will NEVER give it up. I don't smoke everyday, usually a few on special occasions, like after a really great meal, during a party, or on holidays. All in all I buy 1 pack every two months.
Why should I feel guilty about it?

garlicbutter · 23/08/2011 14:48

I wish I had time to read all 13 pages of this thread, but I need to go and buy some fags. Anyway, I agree with everybody (the smoking keeps me calm & easy-going, see.)

People with immensely fragile PFB children should be made to stick to smoke-free areas, which is about 90% of the UK. It doesn't matter if they're wheeling said offpring through traffic, in buggies at exhaust-pipe level, because we all know car drivers can't help it while smokers go hunting for babies to blow smoke at.

£7bn of smokers' £8bn net contribution to the national economy should be spent on building lovely smoking gardens with heating, shelter and subsidised drinks with table service. Non-smokers will be barred.

The remaining £1bn will be invested in buggy-protectors with air filters built in, to save their little occupants from the exhaust fumes their selfish parents inflict on them.

Salmotrutta · 23/08/2011 14:52

Oh there have been judgemental, moralistic threads.

And I was being tongue-in-cheek about the funding! Hmm
Those who judge smokers always love to throw around adjectives like "vile", "disgusting", or think that we should all be made to stay huddled in our own homes/gardens in case we pollute their atmosphere.
But the fact is that there would be a substantial shortfall in funding if we all gave up tomorrow and it may well end up on their income tax or NI contributions.
But we are just pariahs to them anyway so no doubt they'll be glad to take up the slack in taxes.

Salmotrutta · 23/08/2011 14:55

Anyway, I'm off out ... for a fag! Grin

toniguy · 23/08/2011 15:05

God no- wouldn't want to take up the slack in taxes- quite happy for you smokers to pay them!

Salmotrutta · 23/08/2011 15:08

Grin - happy to help!

moonferret · 23/08/2011 15:13

Yes, smoking should be banned in all public places. The smokers who annoy me most are the ones smoking in cars with children in them!

I gave up 6 years ago, and can't believe (and deeply regret) the thousands of pounds I threw at the tobacco industry in order to damage my health. It is reason enough to quit when you consider those faceless drug dealers who manufacture cigarettes from making a fortune out of killing you! Ask yourself; will they care if you die or get a serious disease as a result of using their products?! No, they'll just concentrate on recruiting more teenage addicts!

Luckily, sucking smoke into your lungs is a dying habit and it's getting rarer to see or know smokers.

Salmotrutta · 23/08/2011 15:44

Is that you under a new name mrsdonkybucket??

Well I agree about people smoking in cars with kids in them moonferret - very bad form.
But as for public places, well most smokers do tend to be considerate and stay downwind if at all possible.
There are obviously some who don't care - just like those boys/men I see spitting in childrens play parks or on local games pitches. Without a thought for some poor kid who then lands on their phlegm.
Or people who leave broken glass in picnic areas, or hypodermic needles or whatever.
Or people who leave dog crap lying around to cause infections.
My point is that yes, there will always be people who don't consider others - not just smokers.

MrsDBouquet · 23/08/2011 15:55

Not so much a new name, just a posher version, Salmo ! Grin

Took you long enough, I thought I had upset you last night !
