To have DD's sleep on mattresses on the floor for awhile?

I want to get them bunkbeds, at, they are on old wooden beds.

I am doing a car boot this weekend, and as I want rid of the beds I was planning on dismantling them and trying to sell the, even for a couple of quid, as otherwise they are going to the wood scrap pile. HOWEVER, we do not have themoney for new bunkbeds unless I make serious profit at the car boot, so this means they will be on mattresses on the floor for at least a few weeks, possibly until half term and I have time to sort the new beds. So thats about 2 months max.

That's not too scally is it? My mum is horrified that I am even considering this which has made me question myself now!

They are 3 (4 in 7 weeks) and 5.7

YANBU, although if you don't sell them then I'd put them back up until you can get the new beds, don't stick them on the wood pile.

You won't get enough money for the beds to make up for them having to sleep on the floor for 2 months. I think YABU and their room will look like a flophouse (so I wouldn't want it in my house) but the kids might think it's a bit of fun and it's your house so your choice.

YANBU. It won't be forever, or even for very long.

and the children will think it's great fun!

That was what I originally was thinking fliss, but the hassle of putting them up in the first place is still burnt into my memory like a brand

They are really old, I don't want more than a couple of quid for them, and surely its better for one family to have beds for kids than not?

YANBU. My brother dossed down in my bedroom on a mattress for MONTHS when we were kids as my dad took ages and ages decorating his bedroom for him. He was fine, it was a novelty and I bet they will remember it when they are older. :)

We did this but because mine broke there bunk beds! so they had to sleep on there mattresses they thought it was great fun, they had to wait about 3 weeks i think it was until the new ones arrived.

If you only want a couple of quid for them, I wouldn't bother with the car boot and just leave them up till you can do the new beds. Or persuade someone else to do it

You do know that many people sleep just on mattresses all the time don't you? I did for a year in a bedsit too small for a single bed

I was about 5/6 when I slept on a mattress for a couple of months whilst waiting for bed. It's totally fine - why one earth are you worried?

I slept on a mattress balanced on two pallets for a year once without even realising what they were. Could go to your nearest farm and ask for some pallets?

YANBU. My sister had to sleep in the garage for a month because my Dad took so long painting her room and putting the floor down. She was fine :)

thanks guys, this is what I thought, i mean, its not going to physically harm them. My mum was visceral in her condemnation though (think 'You can't do that! What if someone comes to visit!' type nonsense.

They'll be fine, why would they not be? We often slept on mattresses on the floor when we had overseas relatives staying for a while.

I spent most my teenage yeas on a mattress on the floor after my dad broke the cheap cabin bed moving it room to room. I liked it, aside when stupidly tried to hide stuff under it!

It's fine! Me and my sister had to share a single bed at 3 and 5. We didn't mind that a bit. A mattress each will be luxury!

Just tell your kids they're sleeping like they do in Tokyo for a bit of fun.

Oh and there will be no chance of them falling out of bed.

I would! And in fact, I did.

I needed beds for our boys as although they still fit in their cots they wouldn't stay in them, but I had put all our savings in a bond. The money was for the beds anyway, but obviously we then had to wait to get it and buy the new beds.

They were on mattresses for about 3 months, didn't bother them or me - who cares if it looks like a 'flophouse' surely the only people in your children's room will be people who will know the situation?

Our ds's have dragged the double mattress into room with the other ds. Because it was the summer I said nothing. That was a week ago. They're having great fun at night

Our king size mattress is just on the floor,has been for years.

No dust collects underneath
Fine if you fall off
Great for DD to jump onto

Why don't you try putting the beds on gumtree? Might take a couple of weeks to flog them but the buyers can come round and help you take them down and shift them and your kids can use them in the meantime. And you might make more than at the car boot.

Nothing wrong with kids sleeping on mattresses (assuming the floor isn't drafty). I did it for a year when a student.

My DSs are about to spend a few weeks on mattresses. Having just moved back from abroad and with no beds in sight, a slight re-modelling project to take care of before putting the new beds in, they've agreed that sleeping on mattresses for a while is fine. Actually, they've just spent a few months on the floor already as they didn't like their old beds and said that they felt more comfortable on the floor. Go ahead, sleeping on a mattresses hasn't done many people harm.

I didn't have a bed of my own until I was 9... and never had one at my Dad's house, just a sleeping bag on the floor. Before that I was put to bed in my parent's room, then carried to the sofa when they went to bed. At 7 I got a mattress on the floor - and I LOVED it! I still prefer that to a high up bed - it is so cozy. So don't feel bad for your kids - they'll treat it like an adventure most likely :)

We put our university mattresses on the floor. The bed frames were so crap it was more comfortable.

DS1 broke his cot at 18 months old by yanking on the spindles over a year or so (damn Mamas and Papas cot!) So I put him on a mattress on the floor for six months as he wasn't even walking yet. He was fine, and tbh I wish I'd left it like that for longer as when we put the mattress on it's base he had a nasty accident when his bed guard collapsed :(
