We introduce the potty when our children are babies and give them nappy off time when we can be bothered have the time.

This resulted in DD1 being dry/clean at 12 months old and yet DS being only dry in clothes at 2.11yo and still not reliable with poo in clothes at 3yo. (He has been using a potty for wee since he was 18 months and would ask for a nappy when he wanted a poo)

Just goes to show that personality makes a big difference to age of being dry/clean.

DD2 just 1yo has only been climbing on the potty herself for the last few weeks with the odd wee caught.

Today DD2 is insisting on standing over the potty and weeing whilst standing. Every time I try and encourage her to sit down, she just laughs and shouts her brother's name. Guess she is telling me, if HE can do it, so can she :)

I think it just goes to show how utterly unreliable and bizarre your method is

CurrySpice, the wee went into the potty she was stood over, not on the floor.

ECing works for our family. I like my kids to have nappy off time and to get use to the potty in their own time. :)

PS. DS was being very lazy and has had perfect control from 18 months whilst naked. So capable for doing the same whilst being dressed but he couldn't be arsed, until recently. So be it.

I could not have stood all that wee from your DS in the two years between 1 and 3. Sorry but I'm with curry spice, EC is crackers. 2 wks and DS1 was done with PT.

I don't think the OP sounds smug, just amused that dd is weeing standing up..and she was explaining why it came to be that way... Am I right OP?

OP my two year old is currently learning to use the toilet and not long ago MIL came out of the bathroom laughing her head off. Apparently ds (4) had weed first them dd had walked up to th toilet and tried to wee standing uo just like her big brother. MIL had had to do a quick turnaround lol. I think. My dd is still confused that she isn't allowed to do it like that!

CurrySpice, It does sound bonkers but it works for us. We use nappies the rest of the time, I'm not insane. Just nappy off time is after they sit on a potty for a minute. Also just before we stick them in the bath. Means they are empty fr a while and much less likely to get any wee anywhere.

Poweredbypepsi, Poor MIL. DD2 certainly was copying DS. He normally sits down (as does she), he started standing and so does she. Bless her. She really wants to be one of the bigger children. Always walking/crawling off to sit with her siblings, no idea what is going on but not wanting to miss a second of it :)

FakePlasticTrees, EC is Elimination Communication. Hard core people catch all wee/poo in a potty from day one and have baby naked or in pants from a young age.

But like most things in life, there are different levels of effort and results.

We use cloth nappies with our children. But offer the potty when it makes sense. i.e. Whilst doing a nappy change, to check they are empty before putting a clean nappy on. Prevents the weeing straight in a clean nappy syndrome I have heard about.

Potty after naps as they nearly always wake up with a full bladder and never wee whilst fully asleep. So baby wakes, pop her on potty let her wee. Poo her back in dry cloth nappy.

Potty before baths reduces chance of wee/poo in bath.

I like the way that I start to offer the potty and the child decides if they will use it. As they get older they take over and do what they want, when they are ready. I consider my part in ECing my children over by a year with DD1 and 18 months with DS then it was just a matter of waiting until they wanted to do it. I was worried DS was never going to get it but the bribe of attending nursery in September was enough for him, to get his finger out IYSWIM.

I reckon DD2 will be in the middle somewhere maybe 2yo, but we will see. as long as she learns to SIT down again, I don't care.

The point is my DD was copying my DS and I thought it was funny/cute/daft.

My granny often likes to tell me about how my Mum (and probably many of her generation) were potty trained.

Cloth nappies were a royal pain in th arse to wash and dry pre- washing machines/tumblers and did (back then anyhow) seem to result in a high incidence of nappy rash- hence Granny says most babies started potty training from when they were able to sit up. Even if it saved one or two nappies a day it was well wotrth it and my mum was (apparently) dry by 18mo.

Fair enough babies, just a veteran of far too many competitive Mums who seem to think if your child isnt out of nappies by 18 months you are a failure!

1 is far to young to potty train, my childrens nursery insisted at 2 years three months and my children were dry during the day after a week with NO accidents, they never shit themselves. That was 21 and 16 years ago.

Something to be said for methods carried out by experienced and trained staff rather than a potty mother.
