To think that 10 years old is too young to have your own ipad?

A friend has just bought her 10 year old son an ipad 2 to play games on. Is this the norm for kids that age to have ipads or am I just getting old?

It's entirely her business

There is no 'particular' age for anything like that. It depends on the family and the child concerned.

cyb · 12/08/2011 19:55

I think it completely oTT but I like my children playing with hoop n' sticks so I know nothing

catgirl1976 · 12/08/2011 19:56

Am a bit jealous as I want one, but I think it seems reasonable if he will use it and she can afford it. I would be worried about a 10 year losing it but I guess she knows if he is responsible enough or not.

AgentZigzag · 12/08/2011 19:57

The price for me would be a deciding factor, I've just googled it and they're about £300 (without searching for a deal) Shock that would be enough to put me off, unless your friend is loaded.

But then Nintendo DSs are £100 odd, laptops £200, Wii £100 again, so if they have regular access to them, then why would an Ipad be any different?

usualsuspect · 12/08/2011 19:57

Its up to her what she buys her kids ,I don't think its totally outrageous tbh

orienteerer · 12/08/2011 19:58

YANBU

plupervert · 12/08/2011 19:58

WE have some educational games for DS on an Android tablet, but it is certainly not his - he's 3!

AgentZigzag · 12/08/2011 19:58

They kind of put my excitement at getting a space hopper to shame really cyb Grin

AgentZigzag · 12/08/2011 19:59

...getting a space hopper when I was a young 'un, that read like I was really geared up about one I got the other day Grin

catgirl1976 · 12/08/2011 20:00

I thought you were agentzigzag and i was really Envy because it sounded like so much fun! I want one now!

worraliberty · 12/08/2011 20:02

The Park Rangers brought double space hoppers to the park the other day...some were attached side by side, and some were attached on in front of the other.

I've never had so much fun Grin

AgentZigzag · 12/08/2011 20:04

hehe we got DD1 one a few years ago, I never knew I was so unfit! Grin

I'm being reminded again by drunkenly bouncing on their new trampoline Grin

catgirl1976 · 12/08/2011 20:05

My BF had a bouncy castle at her last party. (no kids :) ) It was AMAZING - the most fun I have had in ages - totally reccomend it! Grin

BikingViking · 12/08/2011 20:10

Was about to agree that I'm also Envy at the iPad - until I read about the space hopper...

catgirl1976 · 12/08/2011 20:11

I think of the two I'm leaning towards the space hopper :)

NettoSuperstar · 12/08/2011 20:14

I might have said the same a few years ago, but I also said Dd would not have a phone before high school age.
She has a phone, and is gettin.g a laptop.
I bought myself a Samsung Galaxy and I'd get Dd one if I could.
She's 10 in two weeks.

bubblesincoffee · 12/08/2011 20:18

Mine had/will have an ipod touch by that age. I don't see the harm.

If we had the money I'd have one for each of us!

InfestationofLannisters · 12/08/2011 20:28

I had a <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?q=ZX81&hl=en&biw=1600&bih=785&tbm=isch&tbnid=OyKzCtfniRnX1M:&imgrefurl=en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZX81&docid=oXWoC7tq71JcRM&w=250&h=221&ei=GX1FTsI5yprxA6-HpNEG&zoom=1&iact=hc&vpx=209&vpy=140&dur=1320&hovh=176&hovw=200&tx=94&ty=98&page=1&tbnh=142&tbnw=161&start=0&ndsp=29&ved=1t:429,r:0,s:0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">ZX81 "computer" at that age.

It was shit and did fuck all unless you stayed up all night programming BASIC commands into it. And it wouldn't even save them because the memory capacity was a whole 1 K

Shock

It didn't teach me anything about IT and actually put me off for years.

My son has learned to use my a computer during this summer holiday. He is four and has autism. He can click, drag and drop, use the arrow keys and the space bar and it has been a godsend. Previously he has used touch screens so this is a real breakthrough for him. He likes the impersonal aspect of it I think. It calms him.

AgentZigzag · 12/08/2011 20:36

My brother had a ZX81 as well infestation, how we would have laughed if we could have seen what PCs do now.

InfestationofLannisters · 12/08/2011 20:41

Oh the ZX81 "games" were great fun Hmm

I had quite forgotten the squeal

nancy75 · 12/08/2011 20:41

dd has an ipad and a space hopper!

TrillianAstra · 12/08/2011 20:44

It's expensive but the thing in itself is not unsuitable for a 10 year old, not at all.

BabyDubsEverywhere · 12/08/2011 20:55

My ds will be getting one of the andriod tablets next month for his birthday, he will be 4, he will love it and use it to death. He also has a space hopper. Grin

AgentZigzag · 12/08/2011 20:58

And have you both made a twat of yourselves having a bounce on them nancy and BabyDubs?

nancy75 · 12/08/2011 21:00

either they are making space hoppers smaller these days, or I have grown more than i thought! (but yes i have had a go - it wasn't pretty)
