perhaps if fb and twitter was closed for a couple of days, not saing forever, thne things would die down a bit and the police would be able to regain control.

what would this achieve???

worraliberty · 08/08/2011 23:47

They'd just use other websites I'm sure

aleene · 08/08/2011 23:48

Can they even do that? and I don't think it would make much difference.

worraliberty · 08/08/2011 23:48

No they can't do that. They're not even British websites

Empusa · 08/08/2011 23:48

You do know they've been using their mobiles to organise this right?

And no, they can't

SybilBeddows · 08/08/2011 23:49

they said on the news earlier it was now being coordinated via Blackberry messaging so it was private between friends rather than on Twitter.

carriedababi · 08/08/2011 23:49

yes but theres no other website that are THAT HUGE

OP posts:
Pandemoniaa · 08/08/2011 23:49

No. I don't want any government thinking it can overtly control the internet in the way you suggest.

GypsyMoth · 08/08/2011 23:49

they have got loudspeakers down there to communicate with, soo it would still happen

Meglet · 08/08/2011 23:50

they're just texting each other AFAIK.

BitOfFun · 08/08/2011 23:50

Do we want to live in a totalitarian state? Not really.

carriedababi · 08/08/2011 23:51

i know they are american website, but i wondered if it was possible to stop people in the uk connceting to them, sort of cut the uk off from them for a couple of days, if that is even pysically possible.

OP posts:
Empusa · 08/08/2011 23:51

No. It isn't. Thank fuck.

Macaroona · 08/08/2011 23:52

They were using BBM, and it has been temporarily disabled apparently.

AnyFucker · 08/08/2011 23:52

bloody hell, no

carriedababi · 08/08/2011 23:52

i know it would still happen, via txt loadspeackers whatever but it might take the momentum out of it if you know what i mean at all

OP posts:
Empusa · 08/08/2011 23:52

Have heard Blackberry are meant to be helping police as much as they can. SO well done Blackberry.

squeakytoy · 08/08/2011 23:53

If the scum can use social media to plan their movements, it makes it a lot easier for the authorities to keep an eye on them. Shutting it down would just send it underground and make it harder to deal with. IMO.

carriedababi · 08/08/2011 23:53

yes that is good of blackberry.

OP posts:
MollieO · 08/08/2011 23:53

They are using BBM so nothing to do with fb or twitter. I'd be delighted if they closed the BB network for a few days. RIM are co-operating with the police.

reelingintheyears · 08/08/2011 23:54

Didn't the Egyptians shut down FB and twitter during the riots there?

carriedababi · 08/08/2011 23:54

good point sueakytoy

OP posts:
Pandemoniaa · 08/08/2011 23:54

Thank fuck indeed. We might live under an unelected coalition of utter cunts but at least they aren't attempting to impose the sort of totalitarianism so beloved of unacceptable regimes elsewhere in the world. Nobody tells me I can or can't use Facebook, Twitter, or any other website.

carriedababi · 08/08/2011 23:54

i don't know reeling

We do not live in China, thank God.
