perhaps if fb and twitter was closed for a couple of days, not saing forever, thne things would die down a bit and the police would be able to regain control.

Libya shut off internet connectionternet connection

BitOfFun · 08/08/2011 23:55

I don't think we want to emulate the Egyptian government. Their leader is on trial for crimes against humanity, after all.

Pandemoniaa · 08/08/2011 23:57

I'd stick to the Style section if I were you, OP. Unless the Government take your advice, of course and shut down Mumsnet and then we'll all be twiddling our potentially riotous thumbs...

Birdsgottafly · 08/08/2011 23:58

OP people are letting friends and family know that they are safe and well via FB and twitter, so it is swings and roundabouts.

BBM's are more of a problem because even when you cannot get a signal, you can BBM. Which normally is an advantage, of course.

Empusa · 09/08/2011 00:00

"Didn't the Egyptians shut down FB and twitter during the riots there?"

I'm pretty certain they had a system already in place to block websites. Whereas we don't, and would need all ISP's to agree to it.

Empusa · 09/08/2011 00:01

Also, what BoF said!

reelingintheyears · 09/08/2011 00:01

What is BBM?

Nihilisticbunny · 09/08/2011 00:02

People seem to be begging for some kind of totalitarian action, get a grip for gods sake, it will calm down, we have had riots before. I don't want curfews, or people shot, or freedom curbed, you never get that shit back.

Empusa · 09/08/2011 00:02

Black Berry Messenger, it's like MSN messenger for Blackberrys

Tortington · 09/08/2011 00:02

oh ffs, thats it! moronic twattishness personified.

shut down the internet
water canons
army

jesus fucked a fucking duck

joric · 09/08/2011 00:04

In one way I agree but as I imagine the police are looking at FB pretty closely at the moment- is probably the reason why it hasn't been shut down.
Anyone who thinks FB is private is deluded.

Birdsgottafly · 09/08/2011 00:05

You pay £5 a month for the BBM service and you can then communicate with any other blackberry, free of charge as much as you want.

Most employers now supply them for work use. They are good if all your DC have them. In places that you cannot get a single a BBM message still gets through.

mayorquimby · 09/08/2011 00:06

Jesus wept

Birdsgottafly · 09/08/2011 00:06

If a picture is put on FB the police can find out exactly where it has come from, what time it was posted etc, very quickly.

joric · 09/08/2011 00:07

I don't want curfews.....or freedom curbed,
They don't have curfews and they are free to do what they like ...look what they are doing!

carriedababi · 09/08/2011 00:07

i doubt they'll feel the need to close mn down, unless they think will go down there throwing buns....

OP posts:
carriedababi · 09/08/2011 00:10

well surely they will have to call the army in at some stage, or they will have to do something....

OP posts:
Birdsgottafly · 09/08/2011 00:17

The police should be able to handle it, but there is rioting now in Birmingham, and other places, so they will literally run out of police units to mobilise and will have to call on the army. It is to early to say and we can only hope for the best.

This is all on top of the usual crime that rural places struggle to deal with whose population will have risen because of camping and holiday making etc.

Luckily the music festivals are quite a while away, yet.

Nihilisticbunny · 09/08/2011 00:20

Yes joric but people rape and murder and steal every single day, they won't just curb the freedom of criminals, it will be everyone. Do you really want to give up your privacy and freedom for a thin veneer of security?

Pan · 09/08/2011 00:22

OP FFS no. Such a gift to do would be a gift to fascists/dictators.

Pan · 09/08/2011 00:22

?? would be a gift to fascists. (you know, those ones that can type)

joric · 09/08/2011 00:23

they won't just curb the freedom of criminals, it will be everyone
Is this a fact?

Pan · 09/08/2011 00:24

yes
