mum0ftw0 · 03/08/2011 16:16

or is that an unreasonable expectation?

OP posts:
Eglu · 03/08/2011 16:18

I would say highly unreasonable.

shouldbeelswhere · 03/08/2011 16:19

seems fairly unreasonable to me but I'd say it's up to the woman doing the walking.

Salmotrutta · 03/08/2011 16:19

I don't know but pregnant African women out in the bush probably have to walk similar distances for water, visiting clinics etc.? Not sure though.......

Mitmoo · 03/08/2011 16:19

Unreasonable I'd say I couldnt have managed it.

mousymouse · 03/08/2011 16:19

I couldn't, or only very very slowly.
would never expect it from a pregnant woman.

TattyDevine · 03/08/2011 16:20

Highly unreasonable.

Its probably possible...if you had to to save your life or something, of course. But its bloody uncomfortable beyond a certain point, it bears down on your bladder, sometimes they are sitting on your sciatic nerve, also its hot...your feet or legs might be swollen, etc...

So what I'm saying is it may be possible but you wont find many doing it just because they have nothing better to do! Particlarly in this kind of weather.

AgentZigzag · 03/08/2011 16:20

I did about two hours walking a day right up to having DD2 (not that it kept the weight I had to lose afterwards down Hmm) but it was pretty slow going at times.

12 miles is far too far.

desperatelyseekingsolutions · 03/08/2011 16:20

Good God no. I'm 22 weeks pregnant and would struggle to do two miles at the moment!

Salmotrutta · 03/08/2011 16:21

Is this woman in the habit of walking long distances?
Because if she is then it may well be OK - Julia Bradbury on Countryfile seems to be continuing her walking although not quite "heavily" pregnant yet.

MalkieFraser · 03/08/2011 16:22

I don't know, some heavily pregnant women are more precious than others. Also depends on level of general fitness and whether bothered by spd, pgp, wtf, etc. I felt no different at 40 weeks than pre-pregnancy both times and would happily have walked to the ends of the earth. Why?

DogsBestFriend · 03/08/2011 16:23

Dunno. I covered that sort of distance fairly regularly when heavily pregnant with both DD1 and DD2 (early 30s, naturally slim, neither a gym-freak nor wildly unfit at the time).

I considered it normal, having no car, living miles from town and owning dogs but have no idea whether others would do so.

Salmotrutta · 03/08/2011 16:24

Yes......... why OP?

MissPenteuth · 03/08/2011 16:24

Generally speaking, no it's not normal. That's about 4 hours at normal walking speed; a lot of walking even for a non-pregnant woman! I'm sure there would be a few that might be fit enough though.

mum0ftw0 · 03/08/2011 16:27

I was just shocked at some posts in the other thread;

'altinkumWed 03-Aug-11 14:40:58
yes I am saying exactly that, 12 miles is at most a 2 hour walk, if your not fit enough to walk that time, then tbh, you need to address your fitness levels.
At 38 weeks pregnant I was regularly doing walks that length.'

'ApocalypseCheeseToastieWed 03-Aug-11 16:16:44
And I agree with altinkum, many heavily prregnant women would be able to walk 12 miles, especially on the flat.'

OP posts:
Salmotrutta · 03/08/2011 16:27

Well, it's perfectly normal for pregnant women in under-developed countries though isn't it? They have to walk. We've just become very sedentary by comparison. I know I am pretty darned lazy when it comes to walking Blush

Salmotrutta · 03/08/2011 16:28

What thread?

TeamDamon · 03/08/2011 16:28

So this is a thread about a thread?

Can you not discuss this on the original thread?

mum0ftw0 · 03/08/2011 16:29

should wheelchairs users get priority on buses

OP posts:
Salmotrutta · 03/08/2011 16:30

Ah - must have a look!

MissPenteuth · 03/08/2011 16:30

From Wikipedia:

"the average human walking speed is about 5 kilometres per hour (km/h), or about 3.1 miles per hour (mph)"

I doubt many people that could walk 12 miles in 2 hours, pregnant or otherwise.

mum0ftw0 · 03/08/2011 16:30

those statements were just so outragious, I thought a fresh point of view on 12 miles being walkable would help get things into perspective.

OP posts:
upahill · 03/08/2011 16:31

I managed a lot of walking with DS1 but not that far. The heat wiped me out.

DS2 was born in the autumn and I used to walk to work which was 8 miles away up until about 7 1/2 months pregnant. It wasn't easy but I was doing it to stay resonably fit. After 7 1/2 months I just swam and went walking on the tread mill gently.

MissPenteuth · 03/08/2011 16:31

that

FetchezLaVache · 03/08/2011 16:31

I am pretty fit (and not pregnant) and I couldn't walk 12 miles in under 2 hours! That's twice average walking pace. I guess I'd better get addressing my fitness levels, then.

FWIW I had days when heavily pregnant when I couldn't have walked 12 yards...

Illegitimate · 03/08/2011 16:32

I was a carer for my nan up until she died.

She lived a just under 2 hours away from me and at least 4 times a week i had to walk there and back.Did this right up until a week before i gave birth to ds2.

wasn't ideal but there was no one else to help her so there was no choice really
