or is that an unreasonable expectation?

Its about 15-20 mins a mile at a gentle pace.

mum0ftw0 · 03/08/2011 16:51

Yeah this is a different topic now

Walking was the only thing I could bleedin' do at the end of my pregnancies. Each time I sat or lay down the dc's would squash my lungs and bladder. And I would still be grumbling about people walking too slowly in front of me.

12 miles is still a long trudge though.

mum0ftw0 · 03/08/2011 16:53

The first mile is 15 minutes (half hour for me when heavily pregnant).

But the miles after that take longer, hence why google earth have ridiculous calculations on how long walking takes.

My sons school does a 10 mile walk on the last day of term before the summer holidays.

He is a healthy 14 year old and this year his form set off at 9.20am and were back to school at 12.20pm - so took them 3 hours.

I could not imagine a heavily pregnant woman being being able to do this in 3 hours.

Some people just talk shite. Its easier all round if you can just accept that when posting.

This thread isn't about wheelchairs, it's about being high and mighty, completely unreasonably, about average people's fitness levels.

fluffles · 03/08/2011 17:00

12 miles is a 2hr RUN - if you stand at the 12mile point on a half marathon course then i would guess that after 2hrs you'll be close to the median number of runners coming through. i would also guess that almost none of them will be pregnant!

KittyDeTour · 03/08/2011 17:01

Just to say, I used to be part of the "pregnancy isn't an illness" brigade - ok shoot me. Now I am on child no3 and to say that I have felt different in this pregnancy is an understatement! I was walking every where including up to 2 or 3 mile walks a day heavily pregnant. As I work in a nursery which is quite physical in itself - lots of lifting and bending, I felt fine with my previous 2 children and had visions of redecorating and re designing the garden when on maternity leave. What a shock!!! I feel absoloutely awful and in a word like crap! DH helps out as much as he can and both DD's are really good but I am so uncomfortable and feel like 10 rounds with Mike Tyson. Of course, with kids already, you have to push yourself much further and unfortunately, we do not have close family alive to call on!!!! I feel that every pregnancy is different and feels different to every woman who experiences it. Whilst it can be a "blooming" time for some, it can be a pain in the arse for others. We all feel differently and please believe me this is not due to fitness levels it is the individual pregnancy.

mum0ftw0 · 03/08/2011 17:01

altinkum you're just mad because this thread shows that 12 miles walking when heavily pregnant IS ridiculous.

2shoes · 03/08/2011 17:02

wow op you are stoked up.
a thread about a thread.

PirateDinosaur · 03/08/2011 17:03

But you did say that if a heavily pregnant woman wasn't fit enough to walk 12 miles in [corrected] 3 hours then she needed to address her fitness levels, altinkum? Or was that someone else?

belgo · 03/08/2011 17:04

I think some people don't actually have any idea of how to estimate a distance of 12 miles.

I walked a lot when I was pregnant, easily managed 4- 5 miles a day, it would never have occurred to me to walk further then that because the town I live in isn't big even to walk that far.

Macaroona · 03/08/2011 17:13

OP this is a ridiculous thread - all you're trying to do is get a load of people to back you up on a point which you should have addressed with the posters on the other thread.

Do you understand why making a 'thread about a thread' is considered very rude on MN? Because this is one of the rudest examples I've seen.

YABU - whether or not I agree with you is irrelevant. MN isn't here to win arguments - it's here for rational debate. Apart from bumsex threads obv.

I did a lot of walking when I was pregnant as I had very restless legs and couldn't sleep as a result if I didn't walk at least 3 miles a day. It was lovely most of the times, but pretty rubbish when it was bucketing down and I still had to go or suffer the consequences! My DH and I went on a walking holiday when I was 25 weeks pregnant and we did about 12 miles each day - I was pretty shattered by the end of it though! I had a pretty easy pregnancy though so I would say it depends on the pregnancy.

nickelbabe · 03/08/2011 17:17

i don't want to be part of the slanging match, but I couldn't do it.
I could walk for an hour, but i couldn't do any more than that.
i would estimate that at normal speed it would be about 4 miles.

but considering my normal 10 minute walk to work this morning felt like a lifetime, i'm not judging anyone.

It also depends on the day you're on - not as in stage of pregnancy, but how you feel on that day.
If i had to walk 12 miles, i would try to make it take a good few hours (2 miles at a time, maybe)

it can be done, but i certainly wouldn't recommend it.

Birdsgottafly · 03/08/2011 17:20

BTW, can we all not not do this, make threads about threads, otherwise MN is going to be a load of shite and we don't want to have to go to NM's, now do we?

pregnancy isnt a illness, if you feel up to it walking a distance is fine.

MrsGerardButler · 03/08/2011 17:49

I regularly do a 4 mile walk at a pretty brisk pace over mostly level ground and it takes 1 hour 10 mins, and I'm reasonably fit.

There's no way I could have done 12 miles while 38 wks pg. I could hardly walk the length of Mothercare.

duchesse · 03/08/2011 17:57

12 miles is not a 2 hour walk! Most people would walk at around 4-5mph even when not pregnant. I was still walking at 38+ weeks pregnant but it was heavy-going and it certainly wasn't at my usual speed. I do think it depends on your level of fitness though. Many top athletes (eg marathon runners) carry on running a gentle 10 mile run practically every day day through pregnancy. Obv they are very, very fit pre pregnancy.
