or is that an unreasonable expectation?

OP posts:
GrimmaTheNome · 03/08/2011 21:56

I could walk 4 miles, but that was limited by my bladder rather than my legs!

HipHopOpotomus · 03/08/2011 21:59

12 miles is a long way to walk pg or not, if you aren't used to lots of walking

GrimmaTheNome · 03/08/2011 22:04

If every disagreement on every thread spawned another one MN wou,d implode in about five minutes.

Explode, surely? Shall I start a thread in Pedants' corner? Grin

rookiemater · 03/08/2011 22:06

I recently did a half marathon ( not pregnant obviously) it took me 2 hrs 42 to run 13.2 miles. Granted I wasn't fast but I can assure you there is no way that 99% of the population could walk 12 miles in 2 hours never mind a pregnant lady.

whackamole · 03/08/2011 22:53

I probably walked for about 3 hours this afternoon, at a fairly slow pace. I'm 29 weeks nearly.

Totally wiped me out tbh. It would have been easier though if the bloody tyre on the buggy hadn't blown!

JemimaMuddledUp · 03/08/2011 23:00

I remember walking 5 miles when I was about 38 weeks pregnant with DS1. It was August too, so very hot. I was very pleased with myself Grin 12 miles would probably have killed me!

I'm pretty sure that I couldn't walk 12 miles in 2hrs now and I am not pregnant. OK so you can walk the first couple of miles at 6mph, but after a few miles you would need a break/sit down/wee/scenic picnic (or is that just me?)

JemimaMuddledUp · 03/08/2011 23:04

Actually I'm not even sure that you could do the first couple of miles at 6mph. I can do the half mile to school in 5 mins when I'm running late quite easily, but I'm not sure how long I could sustain that speed for. And especially not when pregnant.

notlettingthefearshow · 03/08/2011 23:04

what's the point of this thread?

2shoes · 03/08/2011 23:08

there is no point

A1980 · 03/08/2011 23:43

I doubt many people that could walk 12 miles in 2 hours, pregnant or otherwise.

I'm not super fit but I completed a 10k (6 mile) run this year. It wasn't particularly taxing and took me just over an hour.

12 miles is roughly 20k, the outer ring of regents park is 5k. I think i could walk around the outer ring of regents park 4 times without took much difficulty. Pregnant probably not. But then women in developing countries have to walk further. needs must...

A thread about a thread is a really boring way to get sympathy or validate your opinion mumoftwo. Give it up. No one was suggesting you actually walk!

rockinhippy · 03/08/2011 23:54

I managed a lot of walking when heavily pregnant (at 41) - I couldn't in the 1st trimester though, lot of joint &pain problemsConfused

I even travelled around Italy at 7/8 months & probably walked at least that most days, so YES its possible - though I spent a lot of time with my legs dangling in fountains & I over did it & knacked myself up for good once DD was born -

so IMHO possible, but not necessarily advisable

BodyofChristLegsofTinaTurner · 03/08/2011 23:54

And this my friends, is why you are not supposed to start A Thread About a Thread.

Especially one about such an inane and subjective question.

InMyPrime · 04/08/2011 00:07

Has anyone actually bothered to go on google maps or other sites to measure the distances they're talking about? I doubt anyone saying that a 12 mile walk is totally normal for a pregnant woman has. Go to your house on google maps and pick a point that is 6 miles away and then imagine walking there and back. It would take you hours and would most definitely not be comfortable or normal if you were into late pregnancy. Anyone saying otherwise is lying or hasn't bothered to measure out the distance they're talking about. I have done this before where I come back from a long walk, thinking I've done a real marathon but when you check the distance on a map, it turns out it's 7 or 8 miles, not as far as you think at all.

I walked across Edinburgh city centre a few days ago, which is about 3 miles and most of it was uphill (up the Mound for any Edinburgh readers) and I'm 31 weeks pregnant. It was good exercise but definitely not easy on my hips or bladder! Doing 4 times that in one go would have been a major effort and probably made me feel sick and very tired, especially in the heat.

rockinhippy · 04/08/2011 00:22

not lying Hmm & did know the distances due to plotting maps to visit sites of interest, not all walked in one go of course, but some days were 20 plus miles - I used to be very fit, & I wasn't huge even in late pregnancy - but like I said - not any more, so not to be recommended

BrigadeOfLannisters · 04/08/2011 00:36

I couldn't be away from a lavatory for thirty minutes when pregnant let alone three hours and I had reasonably good pregnancies.

InMyPrime - yes! It's easy to underestimate what a mile feels like when you are a driver. There was a thread a couple of years ago from someone who didn't want to walk five miles each way to work in deep snow while it was snowing to stand on her feet for eight hours in a shop. There were so many responses from drivers saying that it took them no time at all in the car and that the OP was BU.

My DS is going to special school in September and it is apparently only 6.6 miles away but takes ten minutes by car on a very direct route. Google maps suggests walking along the arterial road / national speed-limit dual carriageway Hmm and even then it says two hours at walking pace.

EllenJaneisnotmyname · 04/08/2011 01:17

My DH's work does a regular lunchtime 6 mile run. The more fit runners take about 40 mins, the less fit about 55 mins, so running at just over 6 miles an hour. 12 miles in 3 hours is still 4 miles an hour. Not many pregnant ladies at 18, 28 or 38 weeks could manage that.

Haven't read other thread, but don't take up wheelchair users spaces with your enormous buggies. Wheelchair users have no choice. You can get an umbrella fold buggy that lies back fairly cheaply.

I think the point of this thread is that you should proof-read your posts before you hit post message alt. Wink

I think this thread is bloody nasty. Imagine if we all started a thread every time we disagreed with a poster [would get even less done in RL emoticon]
Grow up OP

TimeWasting · 04/08/2011 07:38

The lack of edit function must be a pain alt.

Still, the 12 miles in 2 hours error makes your speedy 4 mile an hour walk look more reasonable. Grin

Dylthan · 04/08/2011 07:40

I've not read the original thread altinkum but did you say that any pg women that couldn't walk 12miles in 3hours needed to address their fitness levels. If you did then that is not a nice thing to say. (My apologys if you didn't actually say this)
