to wonder about my present

Okay, it's my birthday soon and I was having to hang around in town for an hour or so, and my kids (14 and 11) wanted to be dropped at an industrial estate for the hour. They had been given some money (about £80) after visiting relatives recently and I thought they were just going to spend it on themselves. Well, cos we didn't have the money with us, they borrowed a card of mine which is what they generally do. Anyway, it turns out they spent £145 on me. I saw it on my online banking. I know they will give the money to me but I am so overwhelmed that they would do this and don't know whether to say to them that it was too much, as they dont get a lot of money, or to just not accept all the money when they pay me back. I love them so much, little sweethearts.

i want to know what it is !!!

AgentZigzag · 30/07/2011 23:49

I wouldn't feel OK with my DC spending that much on me bluddy, but it depends on what's been going on in the OPs life to make her DC think she needs such a big boost.

They're definately trying to say something with the gesture, and it is very thoughtful putting their mum before the things they might like to have bought for themselves.

bonnieslilsister · 30/07/2011 23:57

I want to know too frazzled!! I'll tell you first!

Thanks everyone. I will let you know .......all in good time .... unless I take a peak sooner

I'm going to assume you're joking about peeking because not letting them see your genuine first reaction when they you open the gift they have spent so much money on would be really unkind.
I hope you like it.

ImperialBlether · 31/07/2011 00:06

But it's not your birthday yet!

CaptainNancy · 31/07/2011 00:06

Maybe they bought themselves a DS or PSP type thingy?

toomuchmonthatendofthemoney · 31/07/2011 00:07

don't peak!! let your joy be genuine - they will know, if you fake it!!

ps my money's on a kindle?

bonnieslilsister · 31/07/2011 08:57

I won't peak...I promise....ahh a kindle.....right price range but it's in a white box the size of a small kettle hope it is not a kettle kind of tall and thin so I think that rules out a kindle

I think you mean "retail park" not industrial estate. :)

You are rather mad letting two children use your bank card though, and it is also illegal.

Your children sound very generous, but I honestly wouldnt be able to let my kids spend so much money on me, especially money that had been given to them as a gift.

Changing2011 · 31/07/2011 09:04

On our local industrial estate there is a porn emporium..... just saying.

Karstan · 31/07/2011 09:06

Retail park is the description I think you're looking for rather than industrial estate.

Spending 145 quid at a retail park = all reasonably normally albeit v. generous of your children

Spending 145 quid at an industrial estate = dodgy dealings

bonnieslilsister · 31/07/2011 09:17

Definately a retail park....my mistake!

squeakytoy surely it is only illegal if I dont give my permission, my kids go up to the shop for me loads using my card and no one has ever said they cant use it. What would you do? Would you spoil their surprise?

DizzyKipper · 31/07/2011 09:45

When's your birthday? I'm curious now.

bonnieslilsister · 31/07/2011 10:35

in two weeks time ....almost feels too long to wait

mysteryfairy · 31/07/2011 10:50

My DH recently bought me a surprise kindle and it is totally fab, I hope that is what they have chosen for you, just because for the budget there's not much else electrical and obviously pleasing for an adult that I can think of. My kindle did come in a bizarrely massive box so still a possibility.

Could you not collect the money your DC have borrowed? That is what I would do but obviously this depends on your finances.

Don't peek and happy birthday!

shmoz · 31/07/2011 11:04

Tall and thin box....soda stream? Hand held blender? Hair straighteners?

DO NOT PEEK, naughty! Grin

bonnieslilsister · 01/08/2011 21:44

I would never peak and besides there is no chance due to school hols my hope is for a kindle!!

OP posts:
oldraver · 01/08/2011 23:23

bonnieslilsister · 02/08/2011 09:29

bonkers20 · 02/08/2011 13:43

Can't you only buy Kindles from Amazon?

bananasplitz · 02/08/2011 13:48

i think its lovely. dont ruin it for them by telling them you know

wait for them togive it to you then either say oooh thats too much, or if you like it, slip them a few notes back :)

lovely kids

bonnieslilsister · 02/08/2011 21:30

I think you can even buy kindles from supermarkets.

I cant ruin it by telling them bananasplitz as I dont know what it is -yet-- but good advice. Thanks all xxx

OP posts:
bonkers20 · 04/08/2011 10:53

Really? Which ones?

TeamDamon · 04/08/2011 10:59

Am I the only one whose bank statements list in what shop my card was used? Confused

So if I went to my local retail park, my statement wouldn't just say: Retail Park - £145, but Comet or Homebase or Argos. Thus helping me narrow down what had been bought Grin
