THIS IS WHAT WAS POSTED BY A MN

I was posting about how the pope could save lives by saying yes condoms are ok then I got these as replies to my post.
Do people really believe this ????????????

ShockShock

maypole1 - condoms do not prevent HIV/AIDS.

maypole1 - I assume it is my comment you are refering to as stupid. Tell me this, do condoms prevent pregnancy.

Limbo is only making a point, Martha. And not an irrelevant one.

Martha85 · 26/07/2011 00:43

DialM - Of course condoms are expensive and not easy to find. It is impossible to ensure that everyone has access to enough condoms. They don't even have access to enough food and clean water!

DialMforMummy · 26/07/2011 00:43

Bareback Limbo! Wink

Martha85 · 26/07/2011 00:43

A point which has been made many times but it is still wrong!

DialMforMummy · 26/07/2011 00:45

Anyway, nice arguing with you Martha but off to bed now.

Martha85 · 26/07/2011 00:45

HHLimbo your statement implies that condoms are 100% effective.

They are not.

FACT!

Martha85 · 26/07/2011 00:47

Goodnight DialM, I will be heading to bed myself soon. Feel like I am going round in circles here! :)

NotADudeExactly · 26/07/2011 00:55

Ahem, no Limbo's statement doesn't in fact imply any such thing.

It merely states that in some cases using a condom will mean that a sexual encounter which might otherwise have resulted in transmission of a disease has no implications for the health of the partner who is not infected.

As states elsewhere on this thread, some actually comprises a very high proportion of cases providing that a condom is used correctly.

The alternative to people engaging in intercourse with a condom is not abstinence but unprotected sex. Surely we can say that the fewer transmissions there are the better - even if we allow for the argument that some transmissions will still take place?

I think I need some Wine!

HHLimbo · 26/07/2011 01:02

Martha did you read my actual post? Please answer the questions:

"Yes Condoms DO protect you from AIDS and HIV, and unwanted pregnancy, and other STDs.

FACT.

Preventing sex also prevents sexually transmitted disease (duh) but would you really advise a married couple to abstain for the rest of their lives? Would you advise anyone that they could never, ever have sex for their entire life? Those who stick to this point of view are unrealistic in the extreme."

Thanks NADE :)

HHLimbo · 26/07/2011 01:07

If you read the BMJ paper linked to earlier, you will see that in the study,

Unprotected sex with a HIV partner resulted in:
12 % transmission to males, and 20% transmission to females.

Sex with a condom resulted in:
0 % transmission.

Birdsgottafly · 26/07/2011 01:10

A person contracts HIV and when their CD4 count drops below a certain level and their viral load increases they are classed as having AIDS, only drug treatment prevents this.

The problem in Africa is that married couples want to naturally concieve children, so condoms are not an option.

The use of condoms doesn't change sexual habits or beliefs and confuses the message.

Marthas point was it is not the complete answer and will only prevent a handfull of cases which in the whole scheme of things won't make a difference.

This started because the OP callled her statement stupid, well it wasn't.

HHLimbo · 26/07/2011 01:10

Martha - if your views prevent people with HIV partners from using condoms, you will have directly caused about 20% of women and 12% of the men to catch HIV.

In light of this, your view are dangerous, irresponsible and completely disgusting. Please stop spreading these lies and dangerous attitudes.

Birdsgottafly · 26/07/2011 01:11

HHLIMBO- that was a European study (now out of date) and does not reflect life in Africa, so in this cases cross cultural studies do not help.

Birdsgottafly · 26/07/2011 01:13

HHLIMBO- we were discussing Africa only, there are numerous false beliefs held around sex and personal conduct, these need to be addressed, also.

HHLimbo · 26/07/2011 01:32

Birds - we are talking about disease transmission. CONDOMS have been proven to prevent transmission.

Your nonsense waffle is completely irrelevant. Stop trying to derail.

Birdsgottafly · 26/07/2011 01:50

We were discussing preventing the spread of HIV in Africa not just its transmission, generally.

As martha asked earlier- have you actually read the thread?

I haven't waffled or spouted nonsence, if someone posts something that is factually incorrect then i am going to mention it, such as, you cannot catch AIDS, HIV can be spoken about without mentioning AIDS, it is a different condition.

mathanxiety · 26/07/2011 04:25

'...if the pope sanctioned contraception at the very least these women could take the pill.at least their would be no children born in to he HIV or aids...'

Because -- all 'Africans' are Catholic?

And what about transmission of HIV in some communities in the developed world, where people presumably have access to information about stds in general and to condoms -- they prefer to ignore the information and forgo condoms because of the views of the Catholic Church ?

Birdsgottafly · 26/07/2011 10:09

A man from Zimbabwe has just been jailed in the UK for infecting his partner with HIV and having unprotected sex with at least 8 other woman, although he knew his status.

Is this also the Popes fault?
