THIS IS WHAT WAS POSTED BY A MN

I was posting about how the pope could save lives by saying yes condoms are ok then I got these as replies to my post.
Do people really believe this ????????????

ShockShock

maypole1 - condoms do not prevent HIV/AIDS.

maypole1 - I assume it is my comment you are refering to as stupid. Tell me this, do condoms prevent pregnancy.

So what's your solution Martha?

Birdsgottafly · 26/07/2011 00:03

Moonferrit- it was published in 1992. I sit weekly with HIV positive people asking their specialist these questions, the research has moved on and there are clinical trials ongoing at the moment, that i support people whilst they are taking part.

Birdsgottafly · 26/07/2011 00:06

Martha- i take it that you are advocating a change in culture and attitude to how sex is used and practised?

The doctors who i have met are saying the same as do other agencies working with extremely damaged ex child soldiers and victims of rape etc.

maypole1 · 26/07/2011 00:06

Martha85 they come pretty dam close I wonder how effective the natural family planning method is against preventing aids

This is the dangerous clap trap that gets spouted in the sates and then when teens do have sex they say well we won't use condoms because they don't work any way

OP posts:
NotADudeExactly · 26/07/2011 00:07

^If you have sex with a person who has HIV and use a condom then there is a chance you will become infected with HIV.
A smaller chance perhaps than if you didn't use a condom.^

Fine, I get that. So far so factual - although the chance is not "perhaps" smaller but definitely and significantly so.

But what, in your opinion, are the implications of this?

maypole1 · 26/07/2011 00:07

Birdsgottafly sorry but that could take decades if it happens at all in the mean time condoms and lot s of them

OP posts:
fuzzywuzzy · 26/07/2011 00:08

Birdsgottafly, I thought male circumcision reduced HIV transmission risks?

DialMforMummy · 26/07/2011 00:09
Martha85 · 26/07/2011 00:10

NotADudeExactly

a) is irrelevant.
b) yes that is what I am saying.

It is irresponsible to promote condoms as a contraceptive/protection against HIV/STIs when they are not 100% effective. It is like playing russian roullete.

With HIV the only solution is to abstain. With pregnancy NFP is more effective when used properly, however abstaining is the only way to totally avoid it.

Martha85 · 26/07/2011 00:11

Birdgottafly - yes absolutely.

moonferret · 26/07/2011 00:12

Well, Birdsgottafly , whether the research is right or wrong, I'm happy to believe that the odds are thousands to one. And it's a risk I'm happy to take where appropriate. I'd rather have no sex than use condoms.

Birdsgottafly · 26/07/2011 00:13

OP the point is that they wouldn't be used, the men forcing sex on to the women are already positive and don't care if they are infecting them.

Also they want children.

Condoms work for couples who agree to use them and know how to.

The blaming of the Pope has gone on since the late eighties when more could have been done to change the culture.

Birdsgottafly · 26/07/2011 00:16

Fuzzy - i was typing to fast deleted the wrong bit, yes adult male circumsicion reduces the risk but again it isn't culturally ingrained to do this.

NotADudeExactly · 26/07/2011 00:20

Martha, the main problem with your argument is that preaching abstinence has so far not lead to abstinence in the overwhelming majority of cases where it was tried.

Hence the imperfect but in fact very effective protection offered by condoms seems much preferable to the alternative, IMHO, namely people still having sex but not using any protection at all - 100% fail proof or not

Birdsgottafly · 26/07/2011 00:20

Martha- i think that what you mean is that the use of condoms is not the answer that some think to the problem of HIV in Africa?

I totally agree.

OP- AIDS cannot be spread or caught, as said ealier, if you are going to call anther poster stupid and start a debate at least get the basics correct.

DialMforMummy · 26/07/2011 00:21

Wow! ferret your choice but IMHO if sex is good a condom makes no difference and it is quite a risk to take. The more people act like you, the more the odds are up.
Martha we don't live in the same world I don't think.

NotADudeExactly · 26/07/2011 00:23

DialM: Thanks! I completely agree on both counts!

Birdsgottafly · 26/07/2011 00:23

But has it been shown/proven that those that are having sex with multiple partners etc (in Africa) would use condoms anyway?

They may not so there isn't an arguement to be had, really.

Martha85 · 26/07/2011 00:27

Birdsgottafly - That's exactly what I mean, thank you.

DialM - Clearly.

NotADudeExactly · 26/07/2011 00:29

So is the non-argument then basically that people - regardless of their HIV status - are going to have sex regardless of the risk posed by STIs? And that there is nothing anyone can do about it until each STI has a cure?

NotADudeExactly · 26/07/2011 00:30

"Non-argument" not because I wish to be offensive but because in that case there really is no argument - just a rather depressing factual statement.

HHLimbo · 26/07/2011 00:36

Yes Condoms DO protect you from AIDS and HIV, and unwanted pregnancy, and other STDs.

FACT.

Preventing sex also prevents sexually transmitted disease (duh) but would you really advise a married couple to abstain for the rest of their lives? Would you advise anyone that they could never, ever have sex for their entire life? Those who stick to this point of view are unrealistic in the extreme.

DialMforMummy · 26/07/2011 00:38

May I add that if you have ever been to Africa, you may find that condoms are bloody expensive and not always easy to find so affordability/access to them as well as education is vital. They are bloody expensive in the UK too.

Martha85 · 26/07/2011 00:39

HHLimbo have you read this thread?

HHLimbo · 26/07/2011 00:41

FFS (literally!)
