THIS IS WHAT WAS POSTED BY A MN

I was posting about how the pope could save lives by saying yes condoms are ok then I got these as replies to my post.
Do people really believe this ????????????

ShockShock

maypole1 - condoms do not prevent HIV/AIDS.

maypole1 - I assume it is my comment you are refering to as stupid. Tell me this, do condoms prevent pregnancy.

maypole1 but you seem to be missing the point that African countries aren't "Catholic" so what the Pope says would have precious little sway.

NotADudeExactly · 25/07/2011 23:26

hiddenhome: If someone wants to use natural family planning, they are of course welcome to. But to say that women who prefer other methods want something shoved into their body cavities sounds, frankly, a little offensive.

The thing with natural family planning is that, unfortunately, it just isn't very effective in a lot of cases.

I should know - if it were I wouldn't be here to post this. Sorry, mum!

hiddenhome · 25/07/2011 23:27

I was just being silly by answering the question that Indaba had put Grin

twinklypearls · 25/07/2011 23:28

The Catholic church, as far as I know, is growing faster in Africa than anywhere else.

maypole1 · 25/07/2011 23:28

Birds thanks for that I didn't know that about circumscion Very interesting

Birdsgottafly · 25/07/2011 23:29

Maypole- HIV and its treatment can give the sufferer diarrhea so being on the pill may not stop pregnancy.

The whole rape culture will not stop unless there is a big change in attitude towards sex and women, so handing out condoms isn't the answer to that as so many of the males are already infected.

DialMforMummy · 25/07/2011 23:29

I just thought it was rather an odd thing to say, as in "poor places in Africa" IYSWIM.
Africa is generally poor and thankfully some forms of treatment has been made available is some parts even for the very poor.
we need a range of intervention to stop the spraed..
I could not agree more.

hiddenhome · 25/07/2011 23:29

I'm not being offensive towards women who have iuds because I had one myself up until a few months ago Hmm

AnnieLobeseder · 25/07/2011 23:30

This whole thread is about the most confusing and disjointed thing I've ever read!

NotADudeExactly · 25/07/2011 23:31

hiddenhome: I didn't say you were - just that it sounded a bit wrong to phrase it that way. Technically speaking, you're of course correct. I prefer to think of my former IUD as a very efficient contraceptive, though.

Tortington · 25/07/2011 23:31

i dont think witchdoctors advocating the rape of babies to cure aids helps.

but thats not the catholics fault yet

hiddenhome · 25/07/2011 23:31

I agree AnnieLobeseder I'm only here because I've been drinking Guiness Grin

Birdsgottafly · 25/07/2011 23:33

By 'poor places' i also meant were education and any form of rights exsisted.

Rape and getting a woman pregnant is still used as a war crime often by HIV positive soldiers (usually very young soldiers) so a change in culture is needed.

The Pope has said that he is no longer opposed to the use of condoms but it isn't the only answer.

hiddenhome · 25/07/2011 23:33

Yeah, mine was an efficient contraceptive too but I still didn't like it and the side effects were too much.

DialMforMummy · 25/07/2011 23:33

AnnieLobeseder YANBU

moonferret · 25/07/2011 23:34

Very disjointed...starting from a disjointed OP.
As I said, the chances of contracting HIV through vaginal sex from someone already infected is thousands to 1. With a condom it will be millions to one.
Back on track...!

DialMforMummy · 25/07/2011 23:35

How do you know?

maypole1 · 25/07/2011 23:35

I am my fourth rum and coke ladies Wine and loving the chat whoop whoop

OP posts:
moonferret · 25/07/2011 23:36

How do you know that smoking causes cancer? Or that Iceland exists?
I just do...

Birdsgottafly · 25/07/2011 23:38

Dial- the reasearch shows very little risk for a man and as i said it is now being studied how much viral load vaginal and anal secrections carry depending on the persons overall viral load.

AnnieLobeseder · 25/07/2011 23:38

But while I'm here....

Bad news: the myths about AIDS cures in Africa are just horrifying, the worst being about raping a virgin being a cure, and men taking the extreme measure of raping babies to make sure they're virgins. It's mentality I just can't get my head around. So much education is needed in Africa. Not the Pope's fault in this case, but he does indeed have plenty of other things to answer for.

Good news: IUDs rock, I haven't had a period in 4 years.

maypole1 · 25/07/2011 23:39

Because people who have lung cancer from smoking usually die with in a year

OP posts:
DialMforMummy · 25/07/2011 23:40

it's just that there is no way of being able to ascertain that it's 1 thousand to 1. So it's a bit of a bold statement to make without evidence.
It's fair to say that some sexual behaviour are more risky than others but it's still nearly impossible to establish for sure what the likelihood is.

hiddenhome · 25/07/2011 23:41

I had a copper one Annie

moonferret · 25/07/2011 23:41

I saw the accepted odds once...trying to find them now.
It was definitely 1 in thousands of contracting from a person known to be infected through vaginal sex.
