THIS IS WHAT WAS POSTED BY A MN

I was posting about how the pope could save lives by saying yes condoms are ok then I got these as replies to my post.
Do people really believe this ????????????

ShockShock

maypole1 - condoms do not prevent HIV/AIDS.

maypole1 - I assume it is my comment you are refering to as stupid. Tell me this, do condoms prevent pregnancy.

hiddenhome · 25/07/2011 23:43

How do you get them to have a vasectomy though? Hmm

Trip to the vets? Grin

AnnieLobeseder · 25/07/2011 23:43

We're going the IUD and vasectomy route. Can you tell we really don't want another baby? Wink

Copper? Nah, hormonal plastic all the way!

hiddenhome · 25/07/2011 23:44

I can't have hormones, they make me itchy. Something to do with the liver Hmm

DialMforMummy · 25/07/2011 23:44

moonferret I am sure you read it somewhere, but can you understand my point when I say it would be something rather difficult to establish?

AnnieLobeseder · 25/07/2011 23:45

An itchy liver? That must be tricky to scratch.....

hiddenhome · 25/07/2011 23:45

Have to go to bed now. At work tomorrow.

No condoms, no sex, no stds, just ZZZZzzzzz Smile

happywheezer · 25/07/2011 23:46

sometimes the drugs don't work. It depends on the person, it's true that two different partners can have a different type of HIV, affecting their viral load and CD4 count.
Also, my friend swore he got HIV from oral sex.

Martha85 · 25/07/2011 23:48

I am the MN the OP quoted.
The point I was making is that condoms do not prevent the transmission of HIV as they are not 100% effective. Condoms may reduce the transmission however I wouldn't take the chance.
Thankfully other people realise this too and my comment does not appear to be as stupid as maypole1 makes it out to be.

DialMforMummy · 25/07/2011 23:48

Will be on my way soon too Hidden. Nighty night Wink

moonferret · 25/07/2011 23:48

Yes...I understand that DialM, but it wouldn't stop me....!

Look at the Wikipedia page here and scroll down to "Transmission".

The chance of a man getting it from unprotected vaginal sex with an infected woman is about 1 in 2000. The chance of a woman getting it from unprotected vaginal sex with an infected man is about 1 in 1000.

(Waits for the first idiot person to criticise Wikipedia, despite the sources being provided!)

Birdsgottafly · 25/07/2011 23:49

It depends on the persons immunity at the time of sex, wether there are any cuts/blood loss from the woman.

It is rare that anti-retrovirals do not work in the UK but there are people who are resistant to all of the treatment, but it is very rare.

Birdsgottafly · 25/07/2011 23:51

BTW Wilki isn't a reliable source.

DialMforMummy · 25/07/2011 23:51

condoms do not prevent the transmission of HIV as they are not 100% effective.
Yes they do. And that's a fact.

NotADudeExactly · 25/07/2011 23:51

Well, yeah. You can definitely transmit HIV via oral sex. Basically whenever you come in touch with any bodily fluid such as blood, semen or vaginal discharge you could theoretically get infected with an STI.

Saliva is a bit trickier. HIV, for example, is theoretically present in saliva but not in sufficient concentration to lead to infection. Kissing will hence not give you HIV. Definitely will give you Herpes, though, which you also don't want.

moonferret · 25/07/2011 23:51

Nothing is then...

moonferret · 25/07/2011 23:52

Birdsgottafly the sources are supplied at the bottom of the article, or are you deliberately being daft?

LineRunner · 25/07/2011 23:54

Oh dear.

DialMforMummy · 25/07/2011 23:54

moonferret will take a look tomorrow as tired now, and get back to you.

moonferret · 25/07/2011 23:54

Here's the original source...just for pedantic Birdsgottafly

moonferret · 25/07/2011 23:54

OK DialM...happy reading!

NotADudeExactly · 25/07/2011 23:56

So, Martha, are you arguing that

a) you personally do not wish to engage in sexual contact with a person who you know is HIV positive - even with a condom?

or

b) promoting condoms as a contraceptive/protection against HIV/STIs is altogether a bit pointless?

a) is obviously a personal choice. Whether or not it is the most sensible approach to take objectively speaking is debatable, but as a choice it is of course valid.

b) is completely irresponsible.

Birdsgottafly · 25/07/2011 23:59

No if your writing as essay or doing research you cannot use Wilki as it isn't the most reliable or credible source, it may use bits of academic information but use what suits.

The stuff it uses is often disputed elsewhere.

Just because a doctor produces something doesn't mean it is correct, the doctor that i was thinking of as advocating the use of vitamins was Matthias Rath, they sometimes have their own agenda nad this damages the fight against HIV as the people do not know what to believe.

He is not the only one who is happy to cause deaths while they enjoy the fame.

Martha85 · 26/07/2011 00:00

OK I am obviously still not being clear enough.
Condoms do not prevent the transmission of HIV 100% of the time.
If you have sex with a person who has HIV and use a condom then there is a chance you will become infected with HIV.
A smaller chance perhaps than if you didn't use a condom.
