A grandma pushed in front of me in the queue in M&S today. When I asked her did she not see me standing in the queue she said 'well how can i miss you you're so fat?'

She was about 70 with her DGD (abt 4) in a pram. What kind of example is that?

YANBU. I avoid M&S like the plague, it seems full of exceptionally rude people. I hope you did call her an antisocial bitch but I imagine you were too taken aback. I just can't believe she said that to you !

Not surprising that the sort of person who thinks it's acceptable to shove in front in a queue also thinks it's acceptable to hurl abuse when challenged about it.

I just meant she had a small child with her and surely they are going to pick up on how she interacts with other people. I don't know why i said abt the pram....

Obviously now I've had 8 hrs to think abt it have come up with lots of wonderful and cutting things i should have said...

Im actually a little bit glad i didn't say anything though as it would have been quite embarrassing to have ended up in a slanging match in middle of my local M&S

You know, sometimes it's good when we can't think of a response on the spot - she didn't get a reaction out of you and hopefully she's feeling a bit silly or even deeply ashamed right now. If you'd responded in kind, she could have felt justified in insulting you.

I once sat next to a man on the tube who had his legs so wide open I had to perch on the edge of the seat. I asked him twice if he could move up please. When he got off the train, he said 'if your arse wasn't so fat it wouldn't have been a problem'. I couldn't think of anything to say maintained a dignified silence.

However, sometimes when people push in front of me, I "accidentally" tread on their feet.

I really am shocked when people lack such basic social skills and manners, especially women 'of age'. I was in B&Q once and was changing DD who was only a few months old at the time, and covered in crap up to the elbows so understandably it wasn't a quick nappy change job, and some fishwife was banging away on the door with me constantly apologizing. Came out, looked at her and smiled and said sorry again, and she said "What ya lookin at, fat bint!" I looked at her DH and said "Wow, quite the catch you have there..." and walked off leaving her with a gaping gob. So sometimes comebacks can be quite good in these situations, but most times not!
