AIBU to have got mad at the door-to-door charity collector?

It's not the fact they knocked at the door asking for money that's annoyed me. But seriously is there any need to go ringing peoples doorbells at 7:30pm on a Friday night? My 9mo DS had just gone to bed and she woke him up. Grrrr, winds me up. If I wanted to donate money to charity I would! I certainly wouldn't go knocking on somebodys door in the evening. Rant over!

BloodyMoFo - not my point! My point is that I think after a certain time of day you shouldn't go around knocking on peoples doors! No need for that comment IMO

NBU in the circumstances but... IME volunteers are sometimes made to feel guilty for turning down the request via a cold call to do it on their street and it can be a nerve-wracking experience and they probably never want to do it again but keep getting that phone call year after year to do their bit for charity.

We used to have a problem with inappropriate usage of the door bell, after dd has gone to bed, so we remove it at night.

She might have no other option but that job. She probably can't choose her hours. I don't think charities should go door to door at all - it is annoying and I think it puts people off giving rather than encourages them. However, she was just doing a job and it's not her fault really.

I did however feel like bopping the girl from Sky in the face as she called to my door twice (first time I couldn't find the key to open the stupid door and told her so). The second time I told her I was moving house (true) and she still didn't shut up. I actually had to tell her to go away which I normally don't do as I do have sympathy for people in shitty jobs like this. I admired her tenacity but it did get ridiculous in the end.

Wise up Bluddy they're sales people like any others. More often than not they've got nothing to do with the charity and are working for an agency.

OP - YANBU. It's incredibly intrusive and rude to knock on doors at this time of the evening. Especially with that hideous faux-matey fakeness they all seem to be trained to launch at you with .

YABU to be mad, yes, unless you are American. But I take your point about disliking callers during the evening.

7.30 is hardly late at night though, and unless she has psychic powers how would she know you had a 9mo?

If you dont want people ringing your doorbell can I suggest you either take the batteries out or stick a notice on the door to ask people to not knock.

YANBU unreasonable to be annoyed but a polite but firm no thank you will do, no need to verbally abuse these callers however irritating they are.

I do have sympathy for them but I never give money or business to door to door callers and I always let any who call know that.

I have no problem with charity collectors calling. I'm less pleased to see people trying to sell things on the doorstep. However I think all cold-calling should stop at 6pm.

Most "volunteers" are earning £7 an hour and get commission for anyone they sign up. It costs the charity thirty quid (or it used to- my mate was a chugger they work for an external agency supporting a different cause every day) for everyone that signed up to a direct debit, nearly a year at the £3 a month that most chuggers ask for.

I'm really not interested in someone knocking on my door in the evening either YADNBU

p.s. you could also just not open the door. That's what I sometimes do too. :)

Agree with bunny... They are often employed by fundraising companies who are used by the charities.. The percentage of money actually taken in by the charity is less than you think. YANBU OP- no need for Fri night.
Feel sorry for people who have this kind of work but they are usually have flexible working hours.
Put a note up saying no cold callers after 7pm?...

Mousesma - I think that's what annoyed me the most. I ignored the bell the first time it rang thinking she'd go away. Then she knocked and rang again! Mmm think I will have to put a note up....

We got a door to door charity collector person with a great big cheesy grin and a bounce like Tigger knock at our door at HALF PAST EIGHT the other night.
Fully appreciate they're 'only doing their job' and whatnot, that doesn't stop me wishing they'd bog off - half past 8 is taking the pee!!
So YANBU to be annoyed with them. I tell them I already to give charity then politely but firmly shut the door.

For me it depends on the charity. The British Legion can call with their poppies anytime. So can the Lions as they bring Santa with them and you don't want to be upsetting him.

Some don't get paid, such as the collectors of Christian Aid envelopes once a year. It's just people from the local churches doing it because they want to help the world's poorest people (regardless of what religion they are/aren't).

I have lived happily for years without a doorbell. And have selective hearing when it comes to knocking. My rationale is that people I know text before they come round!

7.30? That's nothing. They were round here the other day at 9pm!

I was sat watching tv with the light on and ignored the knock. Bloke smiled at me, I smiled back and carried on watching the tv.
