He is just so wrong for the part. What were those casting people thinking?

His head is the wrong shape

his hair is wrong

he can't act

most glaringly wrong is his blue eyes.

HARRY POTTER HAS GREEN EYES FFS!

AIBU?

Hmm, I think Skandar Keynes would have made a great Harry, but I've just googled him and he has very brown eyes. Rats.

LRDTheFeministNutcase · 18/07/2011 12:28

I can't think about Harry or Ron being 'sexy', sorry. Ewwwww!

Sirius Snape - totally wrong. Whoever imagined him a bit like Aragorn, yep, me too. Or at least sexy. And Lupin is fucking annoying with the little moustache - just wrong.

I don't think Emma Watson being pretty is a problem - the way I read the books, I think she is pretty (she can pull it out of the bag when she wants to), but the joke is that the boys just don't see it at all. And in the earlier films that is how they react to her - she grabs onto Ron and he just looks confused, and so on. I think because you see her through Harry's eyes in the books, you just don't really 'get' it.

Robby Coltrane is great.

Groovee · 18/07/2011 13:27

I remember an interview with J K Rowling who was involved in the casting and Daniel Radcliff was how she envisioned Harry. She wrote the book, so I do think if that's what she thought then the casting wasn't wrong

TakeMeDrunkImHome · 18/07/2011 14:05

I LOVE Alan Rickman and he is fabulous to watch but he IS too old to be Snape! Lily and James Potter were supposed to have been 21 when they died weren't they - born 1960 and died 1981 when harry was one year old - so they had harry at the age of 20 - making them and sirius and lupin and snape all 37 in the LAST film and only 31 in the very first film.

NONE of them looked 37 let alone 31 and as for when you see James in the mirror/photos he looks 50 odd!

TheAtomicBroomstick · 18/07/2011 14:31

YABU - I think the casting is great.

Danial Radcliffe is right for Harry, except for the green eyes. The hair is right and he even has the same scar as in the book! (OK, the scare comment was a joke, I hope you got that).

Snape looks perfect for the role IYAM. Luipin is fine, didn't get much image of him. The weaselies all look perfect to me.

Emma Watson, yes she did grow up to be very pretty. As did Hermione. That was partly the point. If you read it properly, she was very pretty. The reason why the boys didn't find her very attractive (well, some did) was because she barely brushed her bushy hair and she didn't wear make-up because she spent her time studying not trying to look pretty. She also walked with a slight hunch from carrying a huge pile of books.

I'm sorry if he ever reads this, but the guy who plays Ron is a bit ugly. But that is Ron. Ron was supposed to be quite ugly. But Hermione is not that shallow that she cares about looks much. That is the other point. She likes Ron's other qualities.

Oh, and yes, Luna Lovegood is great for the part. I think Harry should have ended up with her, not Ginny realistically. Mainly because of the hero complex Ginny has for Harry after the Chamber of sectrets would make a long term relationship fail. Luna, on the otherhand, is always their for Harry, and always understands him. Or perhaps it's just me who thinks that's more important.

Ariesgirl · 18/07/2011 16:02

Are we still talking about this? Because I have thought of something else.

The character of Ginny in the books made me ADORE the name Ginny as belonging to someone clever, feisty, funny and brave. I even decided to call my first born daughter Ginny. She was a brilliant character in the books and you can quite see why Harry would have fallen for her. In the film she is as insipid as weak tea. It made me disproportionately sad and angry

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 18/07/2011 18:51

I agree that the girl playing Ginny has been a big disappointment. Is it her acting skills or the direction though?

encyclogirl · 18/07/2011 19:13

There was zero chemistry between DR and BW (Ginny) onscreen. In the last 3 book they had it by the bucket load. I found that very jarring. I don't blame the actress they just did not LOOK right together, and I do think she was mis-directed.

NorfolkNChamberOfSecrets · 18/07/2011 20:30

JK Towling has said in interviews that she based Snape on AR's Sherrif of Nottingham & Hagrid on Cracker so obviously both those actors will play them despite being too "old" which I don't think AR is!

professorsnape · 18/07/2011 20:35

I agree DR is badly cast, although the films/actors so engrained in our culture that was visualising them when reading the last book!

I think Emma Watson is a terrible actress though. She won't make it as an actor/film star after this film ends I'd say

Maggie Smith, Alan Rickman wonderful of course.

Was devastated about Richard Harris, still love the earlier films when he was Dumbledore. Although Michael Gambon interpreted the character better I'd say - he encompassed the 'battyness' of Dumbledore v well

HumphreyCobbler · 18/07/2011 22:00

I have just watched the penultimate film and I would say DR did a lot better in this one. A reasonably convincing performance compared to the other films.

UnrequitedSkink · 18/07/2011 22:27

I think the films have been hugely let down by the casting of Daniel Radcliffe, and to a lesser extent Emma Watson (she looked the part as a little girl, but her acting is still terrible ten years on). DR just screams 'geek' every time I see him. I think a young Orlando Bloom might have been a good Harry, shame he was too old for the part. I can't believe that in the whole of the UK DR was the best they could come up with.

WhereYouLeftIt · 19/07/2011 01:55

Am I the only one who thinks Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson make a good job of being Harry and Hermione? I think they play their parts pretty well, given that they often have to compress what was a massive bit of the book into a couple of facial expressions.

I can't remember any mention of Harry's head shape in the book. If his hair was wrong, blame the Wardrobe Department. Green eyes are pretty rare, if they'd waited to find an actor with them we might still be waiting for Philosopher's Stone. And it's frankly a bit much for an 11-year-old to be forced to wear contacts.

But; given that the Weasley's are a family of redheads, couldn't they have cast Damian Lewis as the cool older brother Bill? And when reading the books, I envisaged Dawn French in a bad mood as Dolores Umbridge, but I guess that couldn't happen as she'd been The Fat Lady already.

CalamityKate · 19/07/2011 02:14

I always thought of Umbridge as looking like Jo Brand.

bruffin · 19/07/2011 02:36

The only casting I don't like is Michael Gambon as Dumbledore and his Irish accent. I think John Hurt would have been a much better successor to Richard Harris if he hadn't already played Olivander
Albus and Aberforth were bought up together but had completely different accents, why!

encyclogirl · 19/07/2011 06:17

I believe Gambon did the Irish accent as an homage to Richard Harris, and of course they both are Irish.

I suppose it's plausable that the Dumbledores started out in Ireland and moved to Godric's Hollow...

Aberforth seemed to have a bizarre accent, dunno where to place him.

encyclogirl · 19/07/2011 06:19

Oh and of course Aberforth is played by Ciarán Hinds, who is also Irish, so it appears they were going for consistency.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/07/2011 17:41

I'm SO glad they didn't use Dawn French for Umbridge. She was only just okay as The fat Lady and would have made a hideous Umbridge because she overacts and hams everything so badly. Even Helena B Carter was guilty of seriously over-acting for Bellatrix but Dawn French would have made Bellatrix seem subtle in comparison.

I think there have been a couple of scenes between DR and EW that had really lovely subtlety and chemistry - when she hugs him before he goes into the forest and their little dance in the previous film. I think they got the 'I love her like a sister' thing across really well.

doublechocchip · 19/07/2011 18:00

At first I didnt like DW or EW I felt like the first 2 films were like watching bad episodes of Byker Grove/Grange Hill with the terrible acting just with multi million pound budgets! They have got a million times better now though and are great in the roles. Helena Bonham Carter I had picked out in my head for my personal casting of Bellatrix Lestrange and was made up they chose her. Maggie Smith was awesome as Mcgonagall as was the guy who plays Lucius Malfoy. Didnt like Alan Rickman at first but he plays such an excellent baddie hes long since won me over.

To be honest the only major disappointments for me have been Ginny (terrible acting) and the Fred and George. In the books they are laugh out loud funny and more of a 'lads lad'. I felt in the film they were just geeks and a bit cringy!

WhereYouLeftIt · 19/07/2011 18:02

When reading the books, the face of Bellatrix has always been Anna Chancellor for me (Duckface from Four Weddings).

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 19/07/2011 18:38

I love the twins. In a sense, the Weasleys ARE sort of geeks because of their poverty and being blood traitors (in the eyes of the Death Eaters anyway) and Arthur Weasley is an out and out geek with his old engines hidden in the chicken coop etc. I don't know the names of the boys who play fred and George but I think they have a lovely air of sexy cool geekdom about them! :)

Ariesgirl · 19/07/2011 18:42

Those twins are men. They look about 30! AND they're not ginger! Though admittedly they would have been hard pressed to find some ginger identical twins of a certain age in RADA. <a class="break-all" href="http://www.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=www.virginmedia.com/images/potter6prem-phelpstwins-431.jpg&imgrefurl=www.virginmedia.com/movies/galleries/premieres/harry-potter-and-the-half-blood-prince.php%3Fssid%3D14&usg=__ZQzNI0T553AcAiTxCyk-kKoDRQU=&h=300&w=431&sz=34&hl=en&start=0&zoom=1&tbnid=tFz0wjqOgKr7uM:&tbnh=146&tbnw=165&ei=msElTqrsPIez8QO0ps37Cg&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dweasley%2Btwins%26hl%3Den%26client%3Dsafari%26sa%3DX%26rls%3Den%26biw%3D1280%26bih%3D634%26tbm%3Disch%26prmd%3Divns&itbs=1&iact=hc&vpx=176&vpy=298&dur=428&hovh=148&hovw=170&tx=153&ty=101&page=1&ndsp=16&ved=1t:429,r:5,s:0" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Look!

Actually the one moment I laughed at the twins was when Ginny and Harry were snogging in the Weasley's kitchen and one of them walked through and just said "Moooooorning!"
