I am sooo getting a mooncup

Little question though - bit embarrassing. Just wondering if anyone gets a dodgy tummy when they are bleeding - not the runs, just... I don't know, different Blush anyway I am wondering if a mooncup would also help with that?

Glitterknickaz · 16/07/2011 22:36

I've found that down there is a little strange since I had DD, sometimes I have to hold the mooncup in whilst I 'go' (sorry if tmi) but if you're loose that shouldn't be an issue.

I can't see how it'd help really

MorelliOrRanger · 16/07/2011 23:16

Wow interesting thread. I'm looking into getting one of these and I will do now I think on the strength of the ladies here.

Howling YABU about the song, it's hilarious [hsmile]

StealthPolarBear · 16/07/2011 23:17

not sure but mine definitely helped with stomach cramps!

PeopleCallMeTricky · 16/07/2011 23:28

Funnily enough my last period was a lot lighter, I didn't connect it to the mooncup though.
I used to have problems with sex being uncomfortable and basically having an itchy vulva (nice) but I don't anymore.
Is there no end to the mooncup's talents?

sweetpea2petals · 16/07/2011 23:45

OK! you are all convincing me too - i have a brand new one in the cupboard gathering dust, BUT i have a prolapse Blush can i still use one?

oldraver · 16/07/2011 23:58

I will soon be on my third cycle with a Mooncup and wish I had bought it earlier

I am quite disappointed that my period seems to only last a few days now, is this a coincidence ?

foreverondiet · 17/07/2011 00:03

I love my mooncup, have had it for around 6 years.

I got the hang of it right away. I could never go back to using anything else.

For me the benefits are:

a) cost - a one off cost and it lasts for years, begrudged pads I had to buy after DS2!
b) comfort - find it more comfortable than tampons (drying esp if period is light) or pads, I don't feel it at all, not drying at all
c) Waste - no pads or tampons in bin or worry about flushing
d) capacity - holds more than a tampon if flow is heavy
e) convenience - no need to take supplies with when out for the day
f) other benefits - seems to shorten period by a day or so.

Glitterknickaz · 17/07/2011 00:03

sweetpea apparently not Sad
any opportunity for repair?

oldraver no, they do tend to make periods shorter for some reason

Bunsouttheoven · 17/07/2011 00:11

Had not seriously considered one before thinking they were for strange Eco extremists Wink but by Jove I think I might just order one.

Re the flushable argument I too genuinely did not know it was a big no no. I shall not flush again, those posters who put it more kindly than some were much more persuasive.

Amazon here I come, just to work out if I have a builders bucket or not!Grin

BitOfFun · 17/07/2011 00:17

Mooncups make me want to evangelise. They have revolutionised periods for me.

AuntiePickleBottom · 17/07/2011 00:20

i love my mooncup, sorry tmi here but i tend to forget when i am on and i went on a rollercoaster with no leakage at all.

foreverondiet · 17/07/2011 00:21

Just read whole thread, and will add:

a) I have a (mirena) coil, fine to use mooncup although yes better to break seal first.

b) I sterilise with a milton tablet at the end of each period in old plastic cup I keep in bathroom and use for mooncup only. Didn't fancy boiling it in a saucepan I use for food.

c) yes possible might help with cramps....

d) another benefit for me is in gym changing room no strings hanging or no pads in knickers..... great for swimming.

I am only v lazy and honestly think lower maintenance than anything else - eg don't have to remember to buy supplies (ie can't run out) plus need to be changed much less often during period. Have whole month to get round to sterilising.

I do keep panty liners in desk drawer as periods starts out light for first few hours, don't want to carry mooncup around or leave at work, but for me periods not v regular. If totally regular added benefit of being able to put in place before it even starts. And if going on holiday takes up less space than alternatives.....

BertieBotts · 17/07/2011 00:25

I definitely have digestive disturbance when on my period. Actually I find the mooncup slightly hinders this as I find it can put pressure on the colon, which means usually I have to remove it to poo, and the poo can be quite painful in a muscle-aching/period pain sort of way. But luckily it seems to only affect the first day, so it's not too bad as I can just shut myself in the bathroom.

EcoLady · 17/07/2011 00:26

Re the flushable / not flushable issue ... I work in the wastewater side of the water industry.

DO NOT FLUSH TAMPONS! or any other sanitary protection. Tampons, the plastic backing off towels & liners, plus babywipes, get horribly tangled up together inside sewers. Combined with lumps of solidified fats, oils & grease (FOG), this causes blockages. Blockages mean that sewage overflows out of the sewers: either into people's homes or into rivers, where it kills fish.

It is my job to manage one water company's records on pollution incidents. 2/3 are caused by blockages. 2/3 of those blockages are caused by domestic unflushables or FOG.

DO

NOT

FLUSH

TAMPONS

Bunsouttheoven · 18/07/2011 14:15

I've done it, I've made the purchase dan dann dannnnnGrin

It looks a bit scary & this is the small one Hmm couldn't bring myself to buy the bigger size so I may regret that.....

MeriNisipPoissons · 20/07/2011 19:17

Welcome all the new Mooncuppers really tis a fab experience.

You can practice with it before AF appears.

I find the push one side in fold much easier than the squash and fold technique for insertion.

I have removed the tail completely as it rubbed and isn't IMO much help at removing the cup.

Due to daily discharge i use mine 365/yr and empty morning and night time unless AF when it's every visit as easy to do.

joric · 20/07/2011 19:56

Mooncup Hmm

lurcherlover · 20/07/2011 21:47

Why do you even need to take nappy bags out with you? I just wrap a used tampon in loo roll and put it in the sanitary disposal bin. Same at home in the bathroom bin which is obviously emptied regularly. I don't see there is any need to flush them.

This thread is reminding me I want to try a mooncup though...

MeriNisipPoissons · 20/07/2011 22:18

Go for it LurcherLover

RunAwayHome · 20/07/2011 22:34

aren't your tampons just absolutely saturated and heavy by the time they come out? (all but fall out into the toilet, at which point it's not that easy to get them back to wrap them up!?) And huge wodges of loo roll to wrap them up, and even then it soaks through that pretty quickly, so need some kind of plastic bag I guess. Where I grew up it was also not a problem to flush them, so it's been a learning curve to realise it's not acceptable in the UK. Don't think I'd get on well with a mooncup, find the whole idea a bit icky. Tampons are hard enough to get in when it's heavy flow, slippery and messy and generally a bit disgusting, and I can't see a mooncup being easier. And a tipped cervix too, sounds like it would be hard to get it in the right place?

BertieBotts · 20/07/2011 22:40

I have a tilted cervix, it isn't a problem - sits much lower.

They're no more difficult to get in than a tampon when you're used to it, which for me only took a couple of tries, and as many have said you have to empty it much less often than changing a tampon anyway, even if you have a heavy flow. I honestly don't think it's any more "ick" than a tampon, anyway.

Oakmaiden · 20/07/2011 23:07

Ok - I want to know 2 things before I take the plunge, so to speak...

  1. What about going swimming or running? Does a mooncup spill? Would I need to use something else when doing those things?
  1. I know you are supposed to be able to wee whilst you are wearing a tampon, but I have never been able to. When I wee the tampon starts to slip and gets uncomfortable, so I have to change it. Is this likely to still be a problem with a mooncup?

Thank you

Pixel · 20/07/2011 23:20

To answer first question it's perfectly ok to use for swimming. Also I wear mine for horseriding, I've had lessons trotting with no stirrups and had no leakage whatsoever so I imagine running should be fine too.

Pixel · 20/07/2011 23:22

And it doesn't 'spill' because it has a vacuum seal if inserted correctly, otherwise you wouldn't be able to lie down at night without it leaking out. Smile
