I think I might be too lazy to use a mooncup. I would really like to try it, but it seems like a lot of faff and I am sooo disorganised. I am also a bit worried that it's a lot of outlay (almost £30) if I can't get on with it. Though I do get discount in Boots for another month or so.

C'mon people, convert me :o

thisisyesterday · 15/07/2011 19:39

catgirl, it's so refreshing to see someone on here who is able to change their mind about things and say "hey, you might have a point, i'll see if i can change how i think about that"

so, have a Wine mooncup on me. just kidding. but i really meant the first bit!

TurnipCake · 15/07/2011 19:39

Clarabumps - I would change mine in the shower, that way it's easier to put in and you don't have to deal with the hassle of fiddling around in the loos. I would sterilise mine by boiling it in an old saucepan that I no longer used for cooking. Fortunately I lived alone during this period and didn't have flatmates to explain myself to :o

FuzzpigFourFiveSix · 15/07/2011 19:39

£17.99, where did you get yours?!

catgirl1976 · 15/07/2011 19:40

I didn't realise either. And despite being very open to being re-educated I got a load of stick from some ignorant person. Not very clever behaviour and not the way to change behaviours. I shall try to flush less tampons but I have to say Booyhoo has really annoyed me with her hideous attitude.

BooyHoo · 15/07/2011 19:41

lord above!! some folk really are too very sensitive.

BooyHoo · 15/07/2011 19:41

hideous?

catgirl1976 · 15/07/2011 19:42

yesterday I am happy to change my mind - I really didnt realise the issue and I am not above being educated - I am grateful for it when it happens and is delivered by people in an articulate and considerate way.

thisisyesterday · 15/07/2011 19:42

£17.95 and free shipping

Clarabumps · 15/07/2011 19:43

cool- i might give it a try. Hate tampons and they always end up moving(boke!) and leaking so end up wearing a towel and a tampon as I don't trust either.. So you only have to empty it once a day?

MeriNisipPoissons · 15/07/2011 19:44

How much Shock £17.99 here considering they last a lifetime (& beyond) they are very economical, i was using £6-8 in pads every time!

thisisyesterday · 15/07/2011 19:45

I have to empty mine more than once a day, but I have quite heavy periods. when I first got mine i would wear a sanitary towel at the same time while I got used to how often I needed to change it because it can leak it if gets too full

if you're out and about it's fine to just wipe it with a bit of tissue (make sure none gets left on it though) and re-=use. just rinse it when you get back home

strawberry17 · 15/07/2011 19:45

Another question as I have a mooncup but haven't quite got on with it, but thinking I ought to try again, my period is really heavy the first two days, do you where a towel as well in case of leakage? can't imagine NOT wearing something else just in case of mishap/leaking?

Clarabumps · 15/07/2011 19:47

have ordered one..just had my period so have to wait another month to try it out. man alive!the suspense!!\

TurnipCake · 15/07/2011 19:47

I started off by changing it twice a day (I think the website recommends every 4 - 8 hours, and after a night's sleep) but in the end, there was hardly anything to clean away (my periods became a lot lighter, odd!) so I just started changing once a day, which was more than enough for my needs - and Mooncups aren't associated with TSS.

SybilBeddows · 15/07/2011 19:48

Mooncups are great.
I think they're better for a disorganised person than tampons, actually. Mine lives in my handbag (in the little bag I made for it from some Liberty print scraps) and I never have to think about whether I need to buy tampons or try to remember when my period is due when I'm packing to go away.

TurnipCake · 15/07/2011 19:49

Hurrah! :o I can remember how liberating it was to move away from tampons and pads (not to mention the money saved!)

HowlingBitch · 15/07/2011 19:52

Okie dokie, I just ordered mine too. I just started my perios Clara so depending on delivery I may have to wait a month to try it out too. Suspense indeed! :o

I sometimes wear a pad as well when I'm having a heavy day, just in case, or a pantyliner.

Fontsnob · 15/07/2011 19:56

Damn you all, after a spot of lurking on this thread, I have just ordered one too.

EmmaBemma · 15/07/2011 19:58

"lord above!! some folk really are too very sensitive."

Well, you were being a bit of a dick. catgirl had already said she was going to stop flushing, you should have chalked that up as a victory and moved on, instead of needling her.

SybilBeddows · 15/07/2011 19:59

MeriNisipPoissons ' they last a lifetime (& beyond) '

do you think in the future they will be handed down the generations, from grandmother to grandaughter? Wink

Pixel · 15/07/2011 20:01

My periods have got lighter, shorter and less painful with the mooncup too.

And to the person further down who asked if you can feel it more than a tampon because it sits lower, the answer is no. I was always more aware of tampons because of the string which was sometimes difficult to get in a comfy position (especially as I horseride) whereas I cannot feel the mooncup at all. In fact a couple of times I've forgotten all about it and suddenly remembered the next day that I have my period!

glassescase · 15/07/2011 20:03

Surely tampons are designed to be flushed! They travel through the sewage system and are filtered out at the treatment plant. They do NOT routinely end up on the beach, any more than raw sewage does. When this happens it is because of a failure of the system- as has been outlined on several TV documentaries lately. Certain pipes deposit sewage at sea because of heavy rain, etc. but the vast majority of tampons do not end up on the beach.
