She is nearly 13 and is due her third period right in the middle of our holiday. We were in superdrug today and i picked up a pack of the small tampons. My friend was horrified that I was going to suggest them to my daughter for when she wanted to go in the swimming pool.
Daughter is fully aware of where tampons go and I of course would never push the idea if she said no.!!!!!

Not at that stage yet - phew - but why does your friend think it is dreadful for your DD to wear tampons? If she is happy to then I don't understand the problem ..... Or am I missing something?

yanbu, periods happen and if your dd want to wear towel, tampax or even a moon cup...it's up to her

i used tampons when i was 11 at primary school. i HATED towels and 'stole' a tampon from my mum

i don't understand why people think young girls can't handle them - particularly if you buy 'slim' or 'minis' then i don't see the issue at all.

You would be very unreasonable NOT to allow her to try it. Of course she should be able to give them a go, it will make life a lot more comfortable for her.

The very small ones really are tiny, and I would suggest she try it the first time when her flow is at its heaviest, as that will make it much easier to insert. Also explain to her that to start off with, standing up and putting one leg up on the bath or the toilet will be a lot easier too when putting it in.

YANBU - a good idea to suggest it, without any pressure. If she's interested, she'll give it a go, if not, at least she knows the option's there for when she's ready.

I don't understand your friend's horror at all. For what it's worth, my mother gave me a tampon when I had my first period. I've never used pads.

YANBU. My mum gave me tampons for my 2nd period. It took about an hour and a half to get one up there, but I eventually managed it. Pads are horrible. I really don't see the problem.

Eh????? I was nervous about using tampons when I first got my period (age 11) but once I did at about 12 I never looked back. If and when I have a DD I will be giving her a pack from her first period to experiment with at her leisure.

YANBU. My mum never let me use tampons. She always told me I would "ruin" myself by using them. Very odd! I wish she had of as it would have saved me from alot of discomfort!

Mooncup? Less chemicals in it for your DD at her young age. Will last her and be cheaper than many years of tampons.

thanks , I thought it was me! The mini ones seem ok. I make her laugh when I describe the 'looped' non adhesive, non winged towels that my Mum gave me. ( i am quite old).

I may have a google at the mooncups as not something i have ever tried

YANBU, I used them from the very first period - I came on two days before my sister's swimming birthday party, so it was figure them out or don't swim!
