AIBU?

To be annoyed about people who claim to live/be from London

People who claim to live/be from London really get my back up. You don't have a London postcode, dialling code, hell it doesn't even say London in your address. AIBU or should I just ignore these people who try to boost their profile to the uninitiated?

Yeah, very serious couple holiday (for friend's wedding), by the end of which, our names were merged into one "oh, so you're mrabsandabs! [friend] has told us so much about you! Nice to meet you mrabsandabs" and they always put DP's name first. Not. Impressed

We did have one hot male waiter. He gave us jam.

I'm the opposite. I'm in Kingston, which is London, but I say it's Surrey!

Should have flicked it at the mrandmrs callers

Damn it, computer playing up, as my first post didn't show up on my screen at first!

Blooming thing.

Twas very annoying. and weird at times. There was one guy who chatted to me all evening, knew all about my life and was going on like we'd known each other for years - I have no freaking clue who he was. It was odd. And when I pointed out DP and said "that's mrabs" he went "of course I know that". WHO ARE YOU PERSON?

I see there was a wolffleece controversy that I missed while on vacation. Gutted.

Anyway, I suppose this London - places near London is like people from New Jersey saying they're from New York. You're not. You're from Joisey - deal with it and move on.

Sometimes you're right on the cusp. For example, I have a Surrey postcode, but I have a 0208 phone number and pay my council tax to the London Borough of Merton.

"I know people who live in Chingford (E4) and South Woodford (E18) who are appalled that they have east London postcodes and constantly remind you they live in Essex grin."

Argh. This annoys the hell out of me. Your friends are mistaken. They do live in London, NOT Essex. Chingford is in the London Borough of Waltham Forest and has been for well over 30 years. South Woodford is in the London Borough of Redbridge.

I live just outside London but within walking distance of a tube station. If I'm having a brief conversation from someone who doesn't live in the South East, I may just say 'London' when asked. It's quicker. I don't see how it's any kind of boost. But I'm still a Londonder because I was born and grew up there.

Well, just to add my tuppence, I am from Spain but have lived in and around London for seventeen years, I now live in Kingston which is Surrey for some things but London for others and yes, I say I am a Londoner because I am always there and because I love it. If it irritates some people, so be it. I can't say that I am from London, because I was born far away but I am a Londoner at heart.

Oooh sorry just realise that I live in CENTRAL London according to some (I can definitely walk home from Soho in 20 mins).

Being a London Location Purist however I would describe my home as in North London as it is north of the river and not in the West End.

Being a normal human being however I would say who gives a f---!

London is a great place to live (not sarf tho (sorry Dogs) - I do have standards).

I know pozzled but it would be rude to correct them. They are both very aged (parents of schoolfriends) and possibly remember when it was called Londinium. Plus, I think they're worried about house prices Grin.

I get annoyed when reporters for BBC London or London Tonight describe Romford or Ilford as east London, or worse, 'the East End' usually when reporting on a stabbing to make it sound more edgy.

I'm not affronted on behalf of Romford or Ilford. I just despair that their expenses don't stretch to buying an A-Z.

DH once walked home from Soho and it took 3hrs. Not because we live in Croydon but because he was drunk and had a little nap in St James's Park.

I grew up in Slough, so many people there used to try and claim it was London. Mainly the idiots that thought it was more "ghetto" than saying they were from Berkshire. Though these were also the same idiots who thought Ali G was a great role model Hmm

I live in Croydon and wouldn't say I live in London although it is a Greater London borough. My address says Surrey but I would usually just tell people the name of the town. If people from overseas ask where I live I say London though as it is just easier than explaining Grin.

*frilly, I'm Zone 2. Guessing you're closer if you can walk home from Soho in 20 minutes? (although granted, I've never tried).

I live in a London borough, have an 0203 (the new dialling codes) phone number (everyone else here as 0208), use the local tube station and buses (with my Oyster card), but my postal address has MIDDLESEX as the county.

But- this is where it gets confusing: Smile

We moved here from a W9 postcode- (I am a proud Londoner)
When we go on holiday we tell people we live in West London, because technically I do live in West London, but not the West London that I used to live in! (And I am too ashamed to admit where I live for fear of being judged or stereotyped)

If we go shopping we will go 'into London' and we sometimes take the mickey out of the people who live around here because they are from 'the country and you can tell they are not from real London' ( I may sound like a snob but you would too if you had to live here)!

But, I would never admit this and maintain to my friends that yes, of course I still live in London. I am also bringing my daughter up to believe that she lives in London (as I don't want her to identify with the great unwashed that live around here ps. we do intend to move).

BUT BUT BUT technically we DO live in London, and I cling on to that...

ALTHOUGH- if I had never moved and still lived in real London, I would be on the OP's side and not class anything out of W,WC,NW,N,E,SE,SW postcodes as London.

This is all because Royal Mail haven't yet caught up with Greater London, which was created in about 1965, so they're a bit slow. Middlesex doesn't even exist any more but that's still an address. But you can't live there, because it's not a real place.

If you live in a London Borough (so, yes, Croydon and Bromley and Sutton and Kingston etc etc) then you live in London. You've voted for the mayor, you've paid for the Olympics, your police are the Met, blah, blah. You're a Londoner. I think this is a Good Thing.

AbsDuCroissant · 13/07/2011 12:09

It wasn't the walking/crawling distance from Soho necessarily - it's cos I had a "C" in my postcode. "C" for "central"

Surely if there's no gap between, say, London and Richmond itmeans that Richmond is part of London because it's been gobbled up and there's no greenbelt between the two?

Even only 150 years ago, there was London, Hampstead, Richmond, Highgate all as completely separate towns, but they've all merged together into one huge urban sprawl.

In another 150 years places like Edmonton, Slough, even maybe Reading will be suburbs of London. Just mark my words!!

Why would anyone do that?

What is so good about living in London? Confused

It's for fools with too much money and no sense!

Well I live in the London borough of Sutton, voted for the London mayor, have an 0208 phone number - but I live in Surrey. Surrey address, Surrey postcode.

If I was speaking to someone from abroad I would probably say I lived in London as it is more recognisable, but otherwise it's Surrey all the way!

Report
Kewcumber · 13/07/2011 12:18

I moved about a mile from "london" with an SW postcode - moved to "Surrey" with a TW post code but...

kept the same 0208 phone number
Live in the same London borough
Geographically live in "greater London"
closer to a tube line than before (surely the proper test of being in London?

Would it really annoy you if I claimed to live in London?
