To be annoyed about people who claim to live/be from London

People who claim to live/be from London really get my back up. You don't have a London postcode, dialling code, hell it doesn't even say London in your address. AIBU or should I just ignore these people who try to boost their profile to the uninitiated?

I'm a Londoner although I don't live in London but (far too) many miles away from home.

I'm showing my age here - I still get mildly irritated by the claim that Croydon residents live in London.

No, you don't Croydon has a CR postcode and will forever remain part of Surrey as far as I'm concerned.

I got REALLY pissed off the other day when someone tried to tell me that I'm not a Londoner because I no longer live in the city in which I was born and bred! Angry

I'd be impressed if I knew someone who managed to live lived in Tottenham without getting stabbed, to be fair.

retiredgoth2 · 13/07/2011 11:04

I pretend to live in Bath when really I live near Radstock.

If you've ever been to Radstock you'd understand why...

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 13/07/2011 11:04

I know plenty of people who live in Tottenham. Not one of them has been stabbed.

And before you ask, no, that's not because they're the ones doing the stabbing either.

I know someone who said she tried living in London and hated it. It later emerged that she'd lived in Surbiton. Hmm Which I would hate too. Very unfair and inaccurate slander to London though.

Someone thinks that living in North London is something to brag about?

Oh my Lordy, Lordy, no!

VivaLeBeaver · 13/07/2011 11:05

I live up north and for me as a northerner Croydon is definitely in London. It's in the m25. That is my definition of London.

LieInsAreRarerThanTigers · 13/07/2011 11:07

YABU to be annoyed. There are more important issues to be worried about!

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe2726 · 13/07/2011 11:07

If I could choose anywhere in the UK to live, I'd choose the Chilterns... Midsomer Murders country, that is... and so beautiful.

CoffeeIsMyFriend · 13/07/2011 11:08

Im with mumblechum on this. Also with ruby It is easier for me to say to someone that we live near London as it is the nearest big city to us, however I have no need to hear OXford news or London news but I still do. Grin

AllYourCakeAreBelongToMe · 13/07/2011 11:08

LadyClarice, I was joking. I know loads of people who live in Tottenham too, and DH works there :)

ChaoticAngelofGryffindor · 13/07/2011 11:09

Are post codes really a good indicator?

I used to live in Lancashire, now, despite not having moved I live in Merseyside but my post code is Cheshire.

Does it really matter? Confused

frillyflower · 13/07/2011 11:09

Dogs - you must be from sarf ov the rivva!

I live in north London - can walk to West End in 20 mins - and it is very very lovelynot that I ever expected particular respect for that though

retiredgoth2 · 13/07/2011 11:10

Exactly. Bow Bells etc are now outdated.

Cockney Def: 'one who was born within the M25'

Ephiny · 13/07/2011 11:10

I don't understand why anyone would pretend to live in London if they don't, or how it would 'boost their profile' for people to believe they do Confused. Unless it's a particularly posh/expensive area they're claiming to live in?

I do actually live in London (assuming Zone 3 counts as 'proper' London?), don't see it as something to be particularly proud of (especially as our area is quite poor and really not very nice!), it just happened to be the sensible place to move for work reasons. I'd much rather live further out in a nice part of Surrey or something!

LadyClariceCannockMonty · 13/07/2011 11:11

Cake, sorry, I know you were joking; I should have put some Smile or Grin emoticons in to indicate that I was being light-hearted too!

Morloth · 13/07/2011 11:11

I went to Tottenham once, I thought it was quite nice. There was a really good baklava place near where I had to go to get an NI number.

limitedperiodonly · 13/07/2011 11:12

I know people who live in Chingford (E4) and South Woodford (E18) who are appalled that they have east London postcodes and constantly remind you they live in Essex Grin.

LadyFlumpalot · 13/07/2011 11:12

I get confused by this. My postal address is Shaftesbury, Dorset, Dorset postcode. However, I pay my council tax to Wiltshire, get my bins picked up by Wiltshire, but am in the catchment area for the Dorset schools.

Morloth · 13/07/2011 11:13

I didn't even get stabbed even with being a Fulham Mummy, bugaboo, pashmina and all...

DogsBestFriend · 13/07/2011 11:13

frilly, whatever gives you that idea? :o

Sarf... the only place to come from. :)

Hullygully · 13/07/2011 11:13

I was born in London and lived there for 37 years. I have lived elsewhere for ten years (which is amazing as I'm only 26), yet when people ask me where I'm from, I feel compelled to say London. I just can't say where I live now. IS THAT SO WRONG?

stupefy · 13/07/2011 11:13

I am always amazed people like living in London, It's a dump.

( and yes, i lived in central london for a couple of year so I am entitled to an opinion)

Hullygully · 13/07/2011 11:16

All of it, stupefy? Goodness.
