People who claim to live/be from London really get my back up. You don't have a London postcode, dialling code, hell it doesn't even say London in your address. AIBU or should I just ignore these people who try to boost their profile to the uninitiated?

You are right Finallyspring we are SO fake, but we don't care because we know we live in the best bit of London.

OOH frilly you can step outside too and I'll deal with you. You'll wish you'd never set foot in North London

Frankly, it's all London inside the M25 as far as I'm concerned. What really winds me up is people who live in places like Epsom or Weybridge claiming that they don't live in just another London suburb :) I've known people claim that they live 'in the country' to find out that they actually mean Hersham Hmm. The Range Rover Sport and stupid coloured Hunters should have given it away Grin

Born and bred londoner here.(zone 2) Was quite proud of the fact the I'd only been north of watford twice aged 20. For me anything beyond zone 3 is the 'burbs therefore not real London. My children were born in London but we now live outside. I am determined that they can use the tubes and buses and know their way around the museums and southbank like we did as teens...

Croydon confuses everyone, including its residents (well that's got to be one excuse surely?)

North/South divide makes me laugh. All I can say in the matter is that DH has been working for a North London council for the last 22 years. We could probably get a transfer up there (have a council flat) yet he'd rather cycle for 3+ hours everyday than actually have to live North of the river :P

I'm from London but I don't live there any more. I'll always be a Londoner in my heart though. I think a lot of my personality was formed by being from a big city and although I like where I live now I'm just not like someone 'from' here (very rural, very remote). So I'm from London but live (for now) in X.

Right, I'm confused. So- North London is posh or rough? I thought the West was the posh bit? Or is that the middle? And is the East all shouty people like off the telly?

Give me a potted guide, please?

Please don't tell me Brick Lane is meant to be one of the exciting bits, because DP did a gallery show there once, and I was really excited, but it turned out to be just a street full of litter and cabbage leaves.

West London= posh

North London= sounds rough but is posh

South London= rough but the people have 'earts of gold

Brick Lane, Hoxton etc.= sounds exciting but streets full of litter and cabbage leaves

East London=shouty people

Bits are posh (or think they are Wink) bits are rough. But that's London all over really. Dulwich is next door to Peckham (south), Crouch End (vaguely posh, people like Simon Pegg live there) is in Haringey (north).

Where I live I can go up the hill to Crystal Palace (which used to be rough, but is now very up and coming) or down to West Norwood (struggling)

North Londoners think they're posh though, whereas South Londoners don't care that they're not Grin

*disclaimer: please don't take any of this deadly seriously, because I'm pretty sure no Londoners actually do!

Yeah the dentist thing is bad in London. No NHS for love or money where I am. Am forced to go expensive private route.

Upside is - have gorgeous teeth! Won't be risking my fabulous North London gnashers in a fist fight with a blardy suvvenah that's for sure.

Back when I was in "The Smoke", there was a momentary frisson about whether one had a 0207 (chic) phone number or 0208 (outer darkness).

Naturally, I was chic.

Innit.
