AIBU?

To be annoyed about people who claim to live/be from London

People who claim to live/be from London really get my back up. You don't have a London postcode, dialling code, hell it doesn't even say London in your address. AIBU or should I just ignore these people who try to boost their profile to the uninitiated?

Hully, of course you're right. You and I come from London. If people want to know where we live they should ask, but if they say, "Where do you come from?" then they're going to be told, "London!".

I live in a London Borough but I don't have a London postcode and my area code is 0208

Wow Hully - looking good for 26!

I suppose it depends on your definition of "London". I'm hardcore and don't regard 0208 as a proper London phone number, and only venture outside of Zone 2 for emergencies. And food. I do however, count the M25 as the border for population purposes, so I can say that London has 9mn people (weirdo). This arises from feelings of intense inadequancy (thinking I lived in a big city) after going to Delhi (18 mn), Mumbai (30 mn) and piddly lame Jaipur (10mn) and realising that they were bigger than Possibly One Of The Best Cities On Earth. Possibly. If TfL isn't being a pain in the arse and it isn't raining.

Well yes, most of it, unless you are very rich or very lucky.

Is Surrey classed as London? I have a friend from Mitcham who always bangs on 'well I do LIVE in London' but I didnt think Surrey was London?

Report

I've noticed that some young people who originate from the countryside, think being a Londoner is the height of sophistication, which is why they want to say they are Londoners

I can't imagine being impressed by where someone lives, especially not somewhere as vast and varied as London. Why on earth would anyone care?

Now, if you lived on your own private island in the Indian ocean I may be a bit impressed. And if you lied about that I would be pissed off when I arrived on your shores clutching all my worldly belongings you would struggle to get your post, so it's unlikely to happen.

But OP I would definitely say YABU to be bothered. I can't get my head around why it matters. Is London a special club or something?

Fuck me, there are a hell of a lot of lucky Londoners out there then, Stupefy!

I get annoyed when people introduce me as "string from London". I'm 30 miles from London!

Surrey (most of it; Kingston and Richmond are a bit controversial) is NOT London.

Heya Hully! amazing. I ate all the time, slept a lot and got a tan so i'm no longer transparent. What more could one want ...

I find it hilarious to wind my mate who lives in Kingston up, he maintains it's in London (which it is) but I pretend to be adament about it being in Surrey, he just gets so angry so I enjoy it..

I grew up down the road in a place which is officially "Middlesex" (which doesn't exist as a county anymore) in the postal address,
it has a TW postcode (for Twickenham)
It is in the Richmond (London) borough,
It has an 0208 phone number..
We vote for the London Mayor.

But no, it doesn't have a "london postcode" but where else would you say it is if not London?

I don't by any stretch of the imagination think Croydon is London though!

I'm like Hully. Born and bred in London but I don't live there at the moment. If someone asks me where I'm from, the answer is definitely London. Feel like a liar if I say anything else.

I do the opposite, we live in Kingston (which as GiddyPickle has outlined, is in Southwest London), but I always say I'm from Kingston, Surrey.

Well, DP is hot, and he did bring us snacks one evening which could count as waitering, so yes Hully. Yes

London Luton and London Stansted are named thus to not confuse tourists too much. IMO. Though I was asked recently by someone "so, is London just another name for England?" They were 15, so I made SOME allowances, but was still shocked.

I too lived in Central London - loved being able to crawl back from Soho to home in 15 minutes, and not arse about with nightbuses.
